Key to ReadingKey to Reading is a series of readers for children agedbetween 4 and 8. It is based on the whole-word approach to

teaching early reading. The whole-word approach is based

on research findings which indicate that 65% of the words a

child encounters in reading materials is made up of some 400

words. If a child can master these 400 words, he/she should

be able to read and make sense of most of what he/she

reads.

This series adopts a thematic approach to reading, so that

children can relate more readily to the themes introduced in

kindergartens and schools. Each title in the series introduces

selected key words which increase in number and level of

difficulty as the series progresses. Each key word is repeated

an average of 9 to 10 times within the same story to ensure

that children learn the meaning and use of the words in

context.
