Child and youth workerstudents mixed cement,hauled sand, and mingledwith the local youth on aservice-project trip to Ni-caragua designed to en-hance their college learn-ing experience.
The trip which tookplaced from March 20to April 2, had studentsconstructing a room ontoa school house in Haulo-ver, a small rural town onNicaraguas east coast;before going to the capitalcity of Managua to paint ayouth drop-in centre.
The trip was not with-out problems. An out-break of various illnesses
among students and staffplagued the visitors forthe rst week. (See relatedstory on page 7.)
Haulover students inblue pants, skirts andwhite shirts watched asthe Algonquin workersbegan their rst day of la-bour by creating reinforc-ing bars and digging twofoot deep holes for thefoundation.
The second day wasspent carrying the mate-rials to the work site the sand from a riversidequarry and the water fromwells and then mixingthem together by continu-ously pouring water intoa mixture of sand and ce-ment.

Algonquin has added25 new names to its grow-ing list of staff in the$100,000 club.
With the release of theOntario budget comes thedisclosure of the namesof those in the public sec-tor whose salary exceeded$100,000 over the courseof 2009.
For its part, Algonquinhas 97 staff members
listed, an increase of 25from 2008, when it onlyhad 72 staff earning over$100,000.
Joy McKinnon, vicepresident of business de-velopment at the college,is one of the newcomersto the list, earning a salaryof $190,909. Algonquindid not have a VP of busi-ness development prior to
this year.Of the 24 Ontario col-
leges listed, HumberCollege led the way with294 staff earning over$100,000, while Algon-quin ranked seventh, with97 staff on the list.
Only 35 of the 97 staff-ers from Algonquin wereprofessors, the rest beingsenior management.
Franklin Snyder, pro-fessor of mechanical en-
gineering technology atAlgonquin, has the dis-
tinction of being the high-est paid professor at thecollege, earning $129,565.The schools president,Robert Gillett, earned$334,982 during 2009,a raise of 17 per cent, or$48,000 from 2008.
