the institute of Singapore chartered accountants (iSca) is pleased to partner Robert half on the Finance & accounting Salary guide once again. i am happy to share that the guide continues to be a relevant and comprehensive source of information and is a must-read for any finance and accounting professional who wish to gain insights into asia Pacific’s hiring trends in their respective sectors.

economically, asia looks set to benefit from the strengthening of world trade with the World Bank‘s global economic Prospects Report projecting that global economic growth looks set to improve from 2.4 per cent in 2013 to hit 3.5 per cent in 2016. the international Monetary Fund’s Regional economic outlook update also forecasted that asia will grow at 5.3 per cent this year, up from 5.1 per cent in 2013.

on the back of this improved economic outlook, our collaboration with Robert half on the Finance & accounting survey found that 96 per cent of cFos believe their firms will expand this year with 45 per cent of them indicating an intention to grow their finance and accounting teams in the first half of 2014.

consequently, demand for finance and accounting professionals in the areas of risk, compliance, internal audit and tax remain healthy, with 55 per cent of cFos interviewed anticipating salary raises as competition for talent intensifies.

SingaporeSingapore continues to offer an attractive location for companies establishing a regional base to take advantage of the nation’s favourable tax regime and strong regulatory framework. This underpins Singapore’s very low rate of unemployment, and as a consequence, businesses must find new ways to attract and retain top talent.

The latest guidelines that favour hiring local personnel may see some firms vary their recruitment process, though the candidate with the best skill set will still take precedence.

Finance & Accountingthe first half of 2014 is shaping up as a busy period for finance and accounting professionals. a remarkable 96% of cFos believe their firm will experience growth in the year ahead, and as a result, 45% are planning to grow their finance and accounting teams over the six months to June 2014.

the market remains robust as companies continue to make both new and replacement hires. internal audit, tax, risk and compliance professionals are in high demand. the most popular and sought after qualifications include ca, cPa, acca and other recognised accounting degrees.

companies in fast moving consumer goods, energy, oil and gas, pharmaceutical and real estate industries are all looking for experienced and skilled finance and accounting professionals in the market.

in a bid to attract and retain quality talent, 55% of cFos anticipate increasing the salaries for their finance and accounting professionals this year. close to one in four (37%) businesses will increase bonuses in 2014.

Banking & Financial Services as Singapore expands its role as a global services hub, competition for quality financial services professionals is intensifying.

new regulatory requirements will continue to bolster demand for risk and compliance professionals, while demand remains robust for candidates with a proven track record in financial control, internal audit, project finance and commodity trade finance.

nine out of ten (90%) senior financial services leaders are confident their company will grow this year, and as a consequence, 43% of them plan to grow their financial services team in the first half of 2014.

the challenge for today’s financial services leaders in Singapore remains to attract – and retain, top talent. Faced with a tight labour market, 91% of senior financial services leaders are concerned about losing top talent. Remuneration plays a part reducing this risk.

almost one in two (49%) firms will increase salaries for finance professionals in 2014. over one third (37%) of firms will increase bonuses this year.

While it is essential for firms to be competitive in terms of salary and benefits packages, they also need to provide candidates with a clear career path offering growth within the organisation.

hiring activity for financial services professionals in 2014 is expected to be strong in the insurance and corporate banking sectors and private banking.

Qualifications in demand include ca, cFa, FRM and Diploma in compliance. Software skills sought after by employers include Midas, avaloq and advanced excel skills.

Technologythe vast majority (95%) of cios in Singapore are confident about investing new it projects over the next 12 months, and this will create a firm foundation for hiring intentions.

Demand is particularly robust at present for project and programme managers, business analysts, and for candidates with experience in infrastructure, it risk and security and technical architecture.

in the current competitive hiring market, recruitment and retention strategies play a key role. one in two (50%) cios expect to increase salaries for their it teams in 2014. around one in three (32%) firms plan to increase bonuses.

Strong demand is anticipated for it professionals across insurance, private banking, wealth management, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, commodities and it services companies, and solution providers. candidates with good communication skills, regional project exposure and specific domain knowledge will have an advantage.

Hong KongIn a positive and fairly resilient business environment, Hong Kong firms are looking to launch new projects and initiatives, pursue business growth and penetrate new markets. While the competition for talent is keen, employers tend to be willing to invest more time and effort in scouting for the right candidate.

Finance & Accountinglate 2013 saw an exceptional uptick in recruitment activity for finance and accounting professionals in hong Kong, and this bodes well for the year ahead. indeed, 94% of cFos are confident their firm will achieve growth in 2014.

among hong Kong business leaders, 48% anticipate expanding their finance and accounting teams in the first half of 2014. For 61% of businesses, this growth will be driven primarily by product or service expansion.

an overwhelming majority (96%) of business leaders report difficulty recruiting quality finance and accounting professionals and key roles that are most difficult to fill include business/financial analysts (cited by 31% of cFos), cost accountants (26%) and audit staff (24%).

Faced with intense competition for quality candidates, 69% of cFos in hong Kong expect to increase salaries for their finance and accounting teams this year. Four out of ten (43%) cFos also plan to increase bonuses.

Banking & Financial Services almost one in two (46%) hong Kong senior financial services leaders anticipate expanding their team of financial services professionals in the first half of 2014. this recruitment activity is driven by new projects (67%), domestic business growth (49%) as well as new market penetration (41%).

Demand is particularly high for financial services professionals across the insurance, private equity, banking, private banking and asset management sectors.

new regulations impacting sales and trading activity are impacting back office processes, and this is driving demand for personnel with skills in accounting and finance, operations support and risk.

an overwhelming majority (95%) of senior financial services leaders are expressing concern about losing quality professionals. about half of those surveyed said they plan to increase salaries for their financial services teams this year. one in three (31%) leaders are also planning to increase bonuses this year.

Technologythe hiring outlook for it professionals in hong Kong remains buoyant. 2013 was characterised by a restructuring and streamlining of it teams and this has led to improved internal efficiencies in many businesses.

JapanThe business outlook for Japan in 2014 can be best described as broadly optimistic as ‘Abenomics’ start to take effect. While companies overall are cautious of swift changes happening, they are beginning to see the benefits of having more forward-looking businesses and this is reflected in the continued investment in human capital.

almost one in three (29%) cFos expect to expand their finance and accounting teams in the first half of 2014. however, the vast majority (93%) report challenges sourcing top talent. Several skill areas are particularly challenging to recruit for. these include business and financial analysts (cited by 25% of cFos), audit (22%) and accounting (21%).

Remuneration is expected to play a key role in hiring and recruitment intentions. almost one in two (45%) cFos expect finance and accounting salaries to rise in 2014. one third (33%) of firms are planning to increase bonuses.

Technologya number of foreign companies are bringing their project management, delivery and capability back to Japan and this is underpinning demand for it professionals. Demand is especially strong for project managers, particularly candidates with proven experience in delivering global projects across local and regional operations.

Recruitment intentions are being bolstered by new projects (cited by 43% of cios) and international business growth or expansion (43%). nonetheless, 83% of Japan’s business leaders say it is hard finding and attracting quality it talent. to counter this, one in three (35%) cios will increase the salaries of their it teams in 2014, while one in five firms (22%) will increase it bonuses.

Bilingual Japanese candidates enjoy the greatest demand in the sector although Robert half recruitment specialists are seeing an increase in fully bilingual non-Japanese candidates. Broadly, firms are seeking talent with experience in large global projects plus excellent stakeholder management, relationship building and relevant industry experience.

Banking & Financial Services the second half of 2013 saw a strong increase in demand for financial services professionals right across banking, asset management, insurance and consulting industries. this trend is expected to continue in 2014.

nine out of ten (91%) senior financial services leaders in Japan are confident their business will achieve growth in 2014 and this is driving demand for financial services professionals with 35% expecting to add new roles to their team in the first half of 2014.

hiring intentions are being driven largely by implementation of new projects (cited by 65% of senior financial services leaders), with firms most active to recruit in the areas of accounting and finance (63%), operations support (50%) and risk (33%).

Demand is strong for candidates with experience ranging from associate to vice president (VP) level in audit, compliance, financial control, tax, financial advisory and consulting. Sought-after skills include regulatory experience and knowledge (including Dodd Frank reforms and Basel iii requirements), anti-money laundering, financial due diligence, valuations, actuarial skills, and forensics.

Finance & AccountingShanghai will provide considerable career opportunities for finance and accounting professionals in 2014 with 98% of cFos in Shanghai planning to expand and maintain their finance and accounting teams in the first half of the year. coupled with the fact that 99% of cFos are also forecasting business growth in 2014, the battle for top finance and accounting talent is heating up.

an overwhelming 96% of cFos in Shanghai say it is hard to find skilled finance professionals. Roles that are especially difficult to fill include business/financial analysts, financial management/control professionals and accounting professionals.

in order to attract and retain the best people, finance leaders will increase finance and accounting salaries this year – by an average of 8 to 10%. For some companies that are more cost conscious, the increments can be between 5 and 6%. Many firms will also be increasing bonuses. it is important for candidates to manage expectations when they are seeking a new opportunity and ensure that they fulfil the new role’s responsibilities.

Key industries driving demand for finance and accounting professionals in Shanghai include retail, e-commerce, luxury, real estate, fast moving consumer goods (FMcg), healthcare, and industries setting up shared service centres (SSc).

experience in the Big Four is always much appreciated and for accounting/controlling-related positions, cPa and acca accreditations are highly sought after. in positions with strong business involvement, having a MBa is a big plus.

along with technical skills and industry experience (in particular retail, luxury, FMcg and real estate), firms are seeking candidates with strong communication and leadership skills, integrity and a keen business acumen. at senior levels, excellent communication skills in english are a must.

ShanghaiThe new year bodes well and the market is likely to pick up in the second quarter, depending on the performance of the first quarter.
