To : Head Teachers of all Schools Principal Teachers of English, Music & Art Persons in charge of school Burns Clubs Dear Headteacher, This leaflet outlines the wide range of Competitions that are organised annually, by the Robert Burns World Federation (RBWF). We invite you to encourage pupils to participate in the variety of competitions on offer. The In-School Competitions (1-7) should be organised and judged within your school, the winners are eligible to receive RBWF Certificates of Merit. In addition to the In-School Competitions listed, we host Festivals each year, in Verse Speaking, Singing and Instrumental. Pupils should be entered into their Local District Competitions, where they may then be selected to represent their area at the National Finals which are held in the Spring. We also hold a National Choral Festival for Primary School Choirs. Please contact RBWF Head Office or the Convenor for further information on this competition District Competitions and the National Choral Festival are organised by Area Co- ordinators. RBWF Certificates of Merit are awarded to the 3 best entries in each class ONLY.

Competition 1 Verse Speaking P1-5 Robert Burns poem or Scots poem P6-7 Poems and songs of Robert Burns Secondary Poems and songs of Robert Burns Note : If using poems and songs of Robert Burns these may come from any standard edition.

Competition 2 Written Competition Primary 7 - The Test Papers will be confined to the poems : To a Mouse & Address to the Haggis Notes : 1. In the written competition the pupils should know the meaning of Scots language words which occur in the set poems and may also be asked to write from Memory 8-12 lines from one of the poems. 2. If your school wishes to enter this competition please request the pre-set test paper.

Competition 3 Singing Primary 4-7, Secondary 1/2/3/4 /5/6 P4 and P5 Pupils may offer a Burns or other Scots song. All others Pupils must offer a Burns song.

Competition 4 Instrumental P4 Certificates awarded to the best performance of a Burns tune or other Scots melody.

Competition 5 – Project P5-7, Secondary 1/2/3/4 /5/6 Primary Project theme is ‘Robert Burns’ With the aim of encouraging research. Secondary Theme is ‘Robert Burns – his life and or his works’.

Competition 6 – Art P6-7/SEN The subject is an incident from Scottish History or from a Burns poem or song or with the Title ‘My favourite animal from a Burns poem or song’. Secondary Subject is ‘A scene, incident or character from a Burns poem or song’.

Competition 7 – Writing in Scots Language P7 & Secondary Pupils should compose an 8-12 line poem or an appropriate amount of prose on any subject of their choice.

Please Note : 1. Entries for the following competitions should be sent to The Robert Burns World Federation (RBWF) 3a John Dickie Street, Kilmarnock KA1 1HW. 2. Entries in categories 8,9 & 10 should have the following details on each piece and be clearly identified : Pupils Name; Class; School Name; Address & Tel No; Title ASN art entries. 3. Submission date for Competitions 8, 9 & 10, is (no later than) 15th March 2019.

Competition 8 – Project (Nationally Adjudicated) P6 & S1 - The Theme of the project is ‘Robert Burns’ and the aim is to encourage individual research by pupils.

Award Information : 1. RBWF Certificates of Merit will be awarded. 2. The Alex B. McIver Rosebowl is awarded annually to the Primary School judged to have submitted the best entry.

Competition 9 – Art (Nationally Adjudicated) P6&7, ASN Secondary Primary/ASN pupils - A scene, incident from Scottish History or from a Burns poem or song with the title “My favourite animal from a Burns poem or song”. Secondary - A scene, incident or character from a Burns poem or song.

Award Information : 1. Certificates will be awarded to 1st, 2nd & 3rd placed entries in each section and the winning school in each section receiving £100 for school funds. 2. The Toshio Namba Trophy is awarded annually to the best Primary School whose pupils take first place. 3. The Provost Coffey Quaich is awarded annually to the Additional Support Needs School (ASN) who takes first place. 4. The Yorkshire District Trophy is awarded annually to the Secondary School taking first place. Submission Notes : 1. Art may be a painting, pencil or charcoal drawing. 2. Each school is invited to send for adjudication, the THREE best individual works on the chosen theme. 3. Artwork should be no larger than A4 for Primary/ASN and A3 for Secondary 4. Artwork must be easily packaged for submission and return to the school. 5. RBWF Certificates of Merit will be awarded to the best individual entries in each category.

Competition 10 – Writing (Nationally Adjudicated) Secondary 1 & 2 - Pupils should submit a short story of up to 600 words on any topic of the pupil’s choice.

Award Information : 1. This competition is run in partnership with the Association for Scottish Literary Studies. 2. Prizes are awarded as follows :1st - £100; 2nd £75; 3rd £50. A certificate is awarded for each entry received.

Submission Notes : 1. Entries may be written in any of the languages of Scotland. 2. Each entry should have a Title and be Signed stating that the work is entirely the Author’s own work. 3. A maximum of SIX entries per school, may be submitted.
