Queen Elizabeth granted Sir Walter Raleigh a charter to colonize an area in North America.
In 1585, Raleigh sent a group of settlers to an area called Virginia (present day N.C.).

The purpose of this colony?
Upon arrival, the English colonists struggled:1. They were at conflict
with the Natives.
2. They arrived late in the growing season which meant that they would have to starve through the winter.
The colonists decided to go back to England.

In 1587, the settlers returned to North America.
Lacking food and supplies their leader, John White, returned to England.
He leaves behind 117 settlers including his family.
