    by De Doelen, the Rotterdamse Schouwburg theatre andPath cinema. This exceptional variation on the classic city

    6 BEURS/WTCThe 1928 stock exchange was the rst building in Rotterdam

    to be restored to its ormer glory ollowing the 1940 bombard-

    ment. The World Trade Center, a twenty-story oce building

    in the orm o a fattened ellipse that was built on top o theexchange hall, was added in 1986. Brasserie Staal, at the oot

    o the WTC tower, has an outdoor seating area requented by

    conerence attendees and shoppers alike.

    7 THE MEENTThe Meent and surroundings are rapidly developing into one

    o Rotterdams most prominent and dynamic shopping ar-

    eas. Hip and happening concept stores like SuperTrash and

    the UGG shop attract an alternative audience, making this agreat place or trend-spotting. The area caters to every taste

    in terms o ood and drinks: grand cas and stylish restau-

    8 DUDOKThe restaurants name comes rom amous Dutch architect

    Willem Dudok, who designed the imposing oce building,now one o the most amous cas and restaurants in Rot-

    terdam. As many authentic details as possible have been re-

    tained in the large, open-plan space. Dudok has an excellent

    atmosphere or enjoying the Mediterranean cuisine or its

    amous apple pie.

    9 LAURENSKERKNamed ater St Laurence, the patron saint o the city, this Late

    Gothic church received its current shape around 1525, but tookheavy damage during the bombardment on 14 May 1940. It now

    stands in striking contrast to the new architecture that has

    been added to Rotterdam since then. Besides its regular church

    services, the building now also hosts tours, concerts, exhibi-

    tions, lectures, shows and events. Its permanent exhibition,

    entitled A monument ull o stories, reveals its illustrious past.

    10 ERASMUS

    The statue o Desiderius Erasmus rom 1622 is the oldestbronze statue in the Netherlands. As one o the most impor-

    tant humanist philosophers, Erasmus is world-amous. He

    was born in Rotterdam around 1468 and has come to symbol-

    ise the city o his birth.

    11 URBAN ESPRESSOBARThis minimalist little espresso bar with the trendy interior

    not only makes great coee, but also serves delicious sand-

    wiches, soup and resh juice. Ideal or lunch or a nice spot to

    sit down and relax.

    12 CUBE HOUSESArchitect Piet Blom was commissioned to build an unusual

    bridge over the busy arterial road between Blaak and Oude

    Haven. The amous result is the Cube Houses, also known

    as the Blaakse Bos orest. Number 70 is a museum house

    that showcases the interior. The Stayokay hostel in one o the

    Cube Houses is also worth checking out i youd like to stay

    overnight or a rst-hand experience.

    13 OUDE HAVENHistoric ships contrast beautiully with the modern backdrop

    o the inner harbour o Oude Haven. In warm weather, the

    sidewalk cas are packed all evening. Even when the season

    19 ERASMUS BRIDGEThe Erasmus Bridge, designed by architect Ben van Berkel

    in 1996, is the denitive icon o Rotterdam. The 800-metre

    bridge spans the Maas River and links the north and south

    o Rotterdam.

    The suspension bridge has a 139-metre-high steel pylon

    which is secured with 40 cables. The shape o the pylon gavethe bridge its nickname, The Swan.

    20 DE ROTTERDAMDesigned by renowned architect Rem Koolhaas, De Rotterdam

    was completed at the end o 2013. The multiunctional, sustain-

    ably designed building consists o three towers in close prox-

    imity, soaring nearly 150 metres high; their top hal is slightly

    shited compared to their bottom hal. The three linked tow-

    ers are a vertical city o high-class fats, a 4-star hotel, oces,shops, restaurants, tness, parking and cultural unctions.

    21 CRUISE TERMINALThe location on Wilheminakade, with its gorgeous view o the

    is brisk, many locals nd their way to Oude Haven to dine,

    drink and dance. Also includes popular student hangouts.

    14 WITTE HUIS

    45 metres and eleven stories high, this 1898 oce buildingdesigned by architect W. Molenbroek was the rst skyscrap-

    er in Europe. Rather than the steel construction considered

    modern at the time, the architect used thick load-bearing

    walls made o brick. The aade is clad in white-glazed brick

    decorated with mosaics and Art Nouveau images. The build-

    ing is surrounded by sidewalk cas.

    15 RED APPLE

    Playully reerencing NYCs Big Apple, the Red Apple residen-tial tower designed by architect Kees Christiaanse gets its

    name rom the colour and rom the apple market that once

    stood here. The high-prole, bright red lines on the aade

    o the 124-metre tower narrow towards the top, emphasising

    the sleek shape o the building.

    16 VERWOESTE STADThis bronze artwork made in 1951 by Ossip Zadkine is the

    citys main war monument. The gaping hole in the body sym-bolises how Rotterdam was cut to the heart by the German

    bombardment.

    17 MARITIEM MUSEUM ROTTERDAMThe oldest shipping museum in the Netherlands currently

    curates a collection comprising hal a million maritime

    objects. Its diverse exhibitions include Main Port Live, an

    impressive multimedia presentation o the dynamic port

    26 VEERHAVENThe Veerhaven inner harbour is requently reerred to as one

    o the most beautiul spots in Rotterdam. The citys history still

    shines through clearly here. The harbour is currently home

    port and stop-o point or historic ships that still sail the seas,

    as well as more modern sailing ships inspired by nautical his-

    tory. Its excellent location and acilities makes Veerhaven a

    popular port o call on major international shipping routes.

    27 EUROMASTThe Euromast, designed in 1960 by H.A. Maaskant or that

    year s Flor iade show, is the highest observation tower in the

    Netherlands. The observation deck at 100 metres oers a an-

    tastic 360-degree panorama o the city. Take it to the next

    level and board the rotating Euroscoop lit to go all the way

    up to 185 metres. Daredevils can abseil or rope-slide rom

    the Euromast, but its also a great spot to enjoy a cup o coeeor get lunch or dinner with a great view.

    28 WESTELIJK HANDELSTERREINThe stately aades o the Scheepvaartkwar tier conceal the

    Westel ijk Handelsterrein, a late 19th-centu ry listed bui ld-

    ing consisting o 36 warehouses distributed over two lev-

    els. When the complex was rebuilt as a public venue, many

    characteristic elements were preserved. The gorgeous glass

    roo encloses galleries eaturing modern art, as well as res-taurants and shops with an intr iguing range o options.

    Maas, is an attraction in its own right. From 1873 until the mid-

    1970s, thousands o passengers departed or America rom here.

    The ormer arrival and departure hall o the Holland-AmericaLine is part o our industrial heritage. Many cruise ships dock

    35 OUDE & NIEUWE BINNENWEGTogether, Oude Binnenweg and Nieuwe Binnenweg orm

    29 KUNSTHAL ROTTERDAMExhibit ion hall designed by Rem Koolhaas, which hosts about

    The adjacent Museumpark, also designed by Koolhaas, con-sists o a paved zone around the Kunsthal, a romantic zone

    30 NETHERLANDS ARCHITECTURE INSTITUTE (NAI) /THE NEW INSTITUTEThe NAi (architecture), Premsela (ashion+design) and Vir-

    tual Platorm (e-culture) joined orces in 2013 to orm the New

    Institute. The striking building, designed in 1993 by archi-tect Jo Coenen, houses a museum o architecture, design and

    e-culture. Besides its archives and library, it also includes a

    bookshop and a cosy museum ca on the waterront.

    31 MUSEUM BOIJMANS VAN BEUNINGENThe most important museum in Rotterdam is Museum Boi-

    jmans Van Beuningen, which has an extensive collection o

    37 CHINA TOWNThis part o Rotterdam derives its name rom the many Chinese

    businesses which set the tone around the start o the shoppingstreet at Kruisplein. But China Town is much more than Chi-

    in 1864; although it was rebuilt soon ater, it was not restored

    building by the spice mills along the Kralingse Plas. Not only
