From the Property Appearance Committee...Chair Jack Arnold...

▶Property Appearance Reminders...✓Weeds: Weeds are popping up everywhere! The recent rain triggered a rapid outburst of weeds throughout Rio Verde. Please remove the weeds as quickly as possible. If your landscaper isn’t scheduled for a few weeks, call him now. Property owners are responsible for maintaining the river rock all the way to the pavement and dead weeds must also be removed.✓Citrus on Ground: Please remove all fallen citrus as soon as possible. Rotting citrus is both unsightly and unhealthy. ✓Let’s Keep Our Community Beautiful: Our peak visitor season is rapidly approaching. Let’s keep Rio Verde spic and span so everyone can enjoy our beautiful community!

▶$50 Citrus Removal Rebate...The Rio Verde Community Association is again offering a $50 per tree rebate for the removal of mature citrus trees from Rio Verde residential property. We Love our Citrus…But Problems Have Developed●Trees produce more fruit than we can use●Grapefruit is not statin-based medication friendly●Food banks will accept only a small portion of our surplus, mainly oranges, which means a lot of fruit is thrown away●Fallen fruit can create significant problems●Javelinas, roof rats/pack rats plus many bugs feed on fallen fruit●Fruit rotting on the ground is unsightly/unsanitary●Citrus trees are very large users of irrigation water●A single tree can use as much as 20,000 gallons or more per yearPlease Consider Removing a Citrus...●If you can not use the fruit or have multiple trees of the same variety●If you have difficulty maintaining your trees and fruit on the ground●If you would like to significantly reduce your water usageHow do I get rebate?Just sign up at the RVCA Office and submit “before and after” photos. The citrus rebate program is limited to Rio Verde residents only with a limit of two rebates per property.

Living Green in the Verdes...Kick the Salt with a Portable Exchange Water SoftenerThe Living Green in the Verdes Committee is sponsoring a seminar at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, in the Community Center Multi-Function Room to explain the advantages of portable exchange (PE) type water softeners. Paul Miller, Chair of the RVCC Greens/Grounds Committee, will discuss how the salinity from traditional water softeners damages the golf course turf which is watered with reprocessed waste water. Paul will also discuss the cost to counter salinity damage to the golf courses.A portable exchange (PE) water softener has lots of advantages and is the smart, environmentally conscious way to enjoy all the benefits of soft water with no equipment to buy or maintain, no heavy salt bags to buy or carry, plus it eliminates the sodium or potassium discharge to our waste water treatment facility.Rayne Water Conditioning representative, Rick Greene, will be available to discuss the portable exchange (PE) water softener advantages and rental program. Rayne Water can provide newly recharged PE units on a monthly exchange basis for as little as $39.25 + tax per month for both seasonal and full-time residents.Rayne Water is offering free installation for homeowners converting from a conventional softener to a PE unit. In addition, the RVCA Living Green Committee will offer a $50 incentive to the first 10 homeowners to convert their conventional softener to a PE type unit. Questions?? Call Ken Peterson at 471-7905 or 810-938-1236.

Did you know….?

Fun Facts about Swimming and Poolsby Jean HofmannQ: Ever wonder what the lines on the bottom of the pool are for?A: Those are where a swimmer is supposed to swim. (Notbetween the lines but on the lines) The swimmer looks down and the line guides the swimmer in a straight line. Rio Verde’s pool has four lanes, not three like it would if you swam between the lines. (If you cross in front of a lap swimmer don't be surprised if they bump into you. Remember they’re looking down at that line!) Interesting lane line fact, the lane lines are almost always tiled. Swimmers learn to judge their pace by how fast the tiles move under them.Q: Then what are the lines at the end of the lane lines for?A. The “T” at the end of each lane line indicates the wall is near. A lap swimmer knows where to start their flip turn based on those Ts. In a competitive pool the “T” is always 2 meters from the wall. And the wall would have a big cross to help the swimmer correctly place their turn.Q: How long is Rio Verde’s pool?A: 25 yards. Since a mile is 1760 yards it takes 70 lengths plus 10 yards more to equal a mile. Most swimmers just do 72 lengths and call it a mile. And to be more confusing a competitive pool mile is 1650 yards (66 lengths) but in Open Water races a mile is a true mile. Incidentally an Olympic pool is 50 meters long.Q: Did you know there is a standard temperature for a competitive pool?A: For standard competition and the Olympics the governing organization, FINA mandates a water temperature of between 77 to 82 degrees F. Rio Verde’s pool is much warmer than that!Speaking of temperatures, the Rio Verde hot tub is never a safe place for children! The “Adults Only” sign is not a sign of convenience-it’s a sign of safety! Children’s bodies cannot regulate temperature changes the way adults can. Please keep your children out of the hot tub!Q: Did you know you sweat when you swim?A: Always make sure you stay hydrated when swimming laps or doing water aerobics or water walking.Q: How many calories do I burn while swimming?A: This varies by weight but according to active.com a 130 pound person burns 590 calories swimming freestyle for an hour (413 calories if you swim at a slower pace). A 155 pound person will burn 704 calories swimming freestyle for an hour. (493 calories at a slower pace). And the most important fact of all...The pool is a great place to stay fit and have fun. Water aerobics and exercise, lap swimming, and water walking are all low impact activities with tremendous health benefits.See you at the pool!
