Pot-Hole Statistics

• According to HAUC and Geoplace

• 2017/18, the percentage of reported 1st time permanent pot-hole repairs was 27%

• So in absolute terms around 10 out of 100 pot holes currently receive a 1st time permanent repair

Why is this?• The number of road users are currently increasing by 3.5% a year

• Roads are already super busy trying to enable people, goods and services to get where they need to be on time

• So Councils have no choice but to only allocate maintenance contractors a short window to carry out repairs in sensitive areas without causing an unacceptable level of congestion

• Asphalt, the material we rely on to fix up our roads, is (other than ice cream) probably the fastest depreciating asset in the world, where 5 hours after you buy the stuff, it turns from an asset into a liability

• Contractors have to travel and que up sometimes for hours to collect asphalt before arriving at their first job where they then have 4.5 hours to fill as many pot holes as possible before the material is too cold to lay

• As a result, most pot-holes have to be temped, just so the Councils can keep up with the volume of repairs they’re required to address on a daily basis with the resources they have at their disposal

Conclusions

• 10 out of 100 pot-holes receive a 1st time permanent repair each year

• The other 90 are left in a temporary state of repair and have to be revisited the following year or sooner

• In reality 30% of these will end up being swallowed up by resurfacing jobs scheduled the following year

• So its fair to say that Councils have found a way of containing pot-holes, and keeping traffic moving as best they can with the budgets and resources they have at their disposal

• What if we could come up with a way where contractors could make their own hot mix asphalt giving them an extra 2 hours a day to be repairing pot holes?

• Compared to the current 4.5 hours a day of real patching that goes on, that’s an extra 44% more time to go out there and make a huge difference to the war on Pot-Holes

The technology now exists• Billian, the company I work for, have spent the last 4 years developing and proving a Mobile volumetric process

known as Roadmender Asphalt that enables contractors to make their own hot-mix asphalt, in

• Whatever grade they want

• Wherever they want

• Whenever they want it

• At the correct temperature every time

• With no waste, and

• Without having to waste time visiting an asphalt plant

• In addition

• Unlike a traditional asphalt plant, the Roadmender process Is specifically designed to process asphalt containing high percentages of recycled aggregate and bitumen that’s modified with waste tyres. So there are huge sustainability savings to be gained from the technology as well

• The process has been through a 3 year Product Approval Scheme, gained hapas Equivalent Certification from PTS and is CE marked to EN-13108 by the BSI

• While the technology was first launched in the Utility Sector, it is also already being used in high profile and high stress places like Area 9, The M25 and Gatwick AirPort

Benefits• Eliminates 1-3 hour a day of wasted time

• Meaning greater productivity in the form of ~30% more patches completed each day

• With Permanent 1st time repairs

• No Wasted material, and

• At the correct temperature every time eliminating compaction related defects and failures

• The combination of more patches with zero waste results in a lower cost per patch

• And unlike a traditional asphalt plant, the material is available any time 24/7, 365 days a year

• This is a really important point because it means a large number of jobs in sensitive areas that would traditionally have to be temped within a 15 minute window can now be scheduled for 1st time permanent repairs out of hours when traffic volumes are lighter

• The 30% increase in productivity also provides Councils greater resources at their disposal at no extra cost. So when work loads permit, a greater percentage of pot-holes can be scheduled for permanent repairs

Keys to Success• While the Roadmender system also has the Flexibility to Splash and dash if

required but with material that’s:

• Hot

• polymer modified

• lasts longer and

• is 85% less expensive than most tubbed cold lay products

• The single most important factor in deciding how valuable this technology can become is planning

• In other words with 44% more time to play with, and the ability to now be able to make permanent repairs in sensitive areas out of hours

• How many more pot-holes can now be planned for permanent repairs rather than temped?

• Roadmender Asphalt also has very strong Circular Economy Credentials

• According to the Institute for Environmental Research and Education, the Carbon Foot Print for a ton of Virgin Hot-Mix Asphalt is a staggering 840KG’s of CO2e equivalent to 25,200 plastic bags

• A two man team patching 1 ton per day will purchase 398 tons of asphalt per annum

• The CO2e from 398 tons of asphalt purchased = 334 tons (equivalent to 10 million plastic bags)

• Our research suggests 120 tons of this or 30% will be paid for but never used (equivalent to 3 million plastic bags per 2 man patching team)

Roadmender Facts• Zero waste

• Every ton contains 1.7 waste tyres blended into the binder

• Contains Polymer Modified Bitumen, Recycled Aggregate and Hydrated lime

• Asphalt rubber is generally accepted as having a 30% lower carbon foot print than regular asphalt

• This is not surprising when, according to the BBC, 30% of the plastic waste in the ocean comes from waste tyres

• With fly tipping on the rise and China no longer accepting our waste plastic and tyres, the need for circular economy based innovations has never been greater

• In fact in 2015 the State of California brought in a law that now mandates the use of crumb rubber in all asphalt laid across the State

Roadmender Carbon Savings

• The combination of waste tyre modified bitumen and use of 50-90% recycled aggregate, means Roadmender Asphalt has a carbon foot print that’s 70-80% less than regular asphalt

• The zero waste element of the innovation, compared to traditional methods delivers a further 20-30% saving making it close to carbon negative depending on mix design

• One Roadmender team laying 1.5 tons per day will deliver CO2e savings of 334 tons of per annum, repurposing 675 waste tyres in the process

• 334 tons of CO2 saved is equivalent to 10m plastic bags

• A larger Roadmender 500 will deliver 3-4x that repurposing a stack of waste tyres taller than the Eiffel Tower every year in the process

• On a per pot-hole basis the carbon savings are equivalent to 2,520 plastic bags per 1sqm pot hole repaired at 40mm deep

Percentage Breakdown of Carbon Savings

• 50% from Asphalt Recycling

• 30% from Tyre Recycling

• 20% from waste reduction using volumetric process

The Future

• While currently Roadmender Asphalt is manufactured and supplied from a recycling plant in Sheffield

• The ultimate goal is to provide the technology to Councils enabling them to leverage the thousands of tons of high PSV Aggregate and bitumen they’ve already paid for that’s currently sitting in their roads

• I would also like to extend an open invitation to anyone that’s here today to come and visit the plant up in Sheffield if you are interested in learning more about the technology or seeing the process in action

• Thank you
