Pot-Hole Repairs – the Mastic Asphalt Solution The Problem As a result of budget constraints and limited Local Authority investment in the repair and maintenance of highways in recent years, a significant number of pot-holes have developed in the roads throughout Britain which are both dangerous and costly (insurance claims, etc). Most Authorities are trying to remedy the situation but, however, are still investing a large part of their highways budget in making repairs to these ‘pot-holes’ using conventional, but ineffective asphalt patching techniques. It is now clear that such patching methods are not effective, both in terms of costs and reliability with some repairs only lasting for a few days on heavily trafficked roads. Most of the ‘pot-holes’ in the surface result from freeze-thaw stressing associated with the ingress of water into asphalt joint/layer interfaces and the subsequent abrasion by road vehicles. A more permanent, and hence cost effective method of repair, has been demonstrated by the use of impermeable mastic asphalt. Pot-Hole Repairs – the Mastic Asphalt Solution

The Problem

As a result of budget constraints and limited Local Authority investment in the repair and maintenance of highways in recent years, a significant number of pot-holes have developed in the roads throughout Britain which are both dangerous and costly (insurance claims, etc).

Consider the problems associated with frequent pot-hole repairs:

Disruption to traffic and pedestrians – traffic management, diversions, etc; Costs of the repair – materials and labour; Public dissatisfaction with the services of their Authorities; Noise and general nuisance from plant operation;

The Solution – MASTIC ASPHALT

Sharp Asphalt Ltd is based in Bolton, Lancashire, and has over forty years of experience in the mastic asphalting business. Working in conjunction with local suppliers, the company is able to offer a solution to pot-hole repair using mastic asphalt. Repairs are made by the use of a material which is bitumen-rich and fully seals the asphalt aggregate to the base of the pot-hole and to the surrounding existing road materials. The process involves cutting out a neat section of the roadway, pouring hot and viscous mastic asphalt into the prepared area (incorporating any existing asphalt

material) and trowelling the area flat (the finish can be adjusted to suit customers’ requirements). The product cools very quickly and can be trafficked after only a few minutes.

In addition to the installation of a superior road repair material, Sharp Asphalt is able to offer a repair service which:

Allows work to be carried out overnight to minimise disruption; Ensures that the surrounding area only needs to be disrupted on one occasion to allow for

the repair to be carried out;

Provides a permanent solution ensuring that there will be no need to revisit the work in the future to carry out a repair in the designated area again!

Uses limited plant and equipment – the repair is trowelled not laid and rollered, no noisy plant;

Remember that a significant part of the cost of repair is in the site set-up, traffic management, etc, not the material. Not having to carry out repeat repairs significantly reduces this outlay.

Other Benefits

As well as offering a permanent solution to pot-hole repairs, the use of Sharp Asphalt Ltd as a contractor will ensure that Local Authorities in the vicinity of Bolton will be supporting local communities by providing sustainable employment in the contracting area – local labour, local material suppliers, local maintenance services, local spending, etc – all of which address the concerns and desires of Council Representatives.

Sharp Asphalt Ltd is CHAS approved and has all of the necessary insurances, competences and resources to address the road repair requirements of Local Authorities. Work has been completed for Hartlepool, Swansea, Leicestershire, Bolton and St Helens Councils and remedials, warranty claims, etc, have not been requested by any of these clients.

References and Testimonials

We have a significant number of examples of work completed using this repair technique and references and testimonials from other Authorities who have had the foresight to embrace this type of repair mechanism. Testimonials are attached to this document and the company’s Managing Director, Garry Sharp, will be very happy to discuss the repair technique, provide costings, and outline the benefits, etc, with your representative.
