ROAD CLOSURE INFORMATION SUNDAY 2 JULY 2017
PLAN AHEADOn Sunday 2nd July Scotland will host the first IRONMAN 70.3 Edinburgh, using locations and roads in the East Lothian, Midlothian and Edinburgh areas. To ensure athlete and public safety, temporary road closures will be in place and the information contained here is to inform businesses and residents so that you can plan your day to minimise any impact from the event.
IRONMAN triathlons are a global series of events covering either 140.6 or 70.3 miles of swim, bike and run, completed as one continuous event. Two thousand athletes from more than forty countries are expected to compete. The athletes will start the swim at 7am at Cockenzie, followed by the 56 mile bike and complete the event in Holyrood Park with a 13.1 mile half marathon. The fastest athletes will complete the event in around 4 hours, with the final athlete allowed 8½ hours to cross the finish line.
IRONMAN events are a highlight of the year in existing locations across the globe. IRONMAN 70.3 Edinburgh, is supported by Event Scotland, Edinburgh City, East Lothian and Midlothian Councils and planned in coordination with Police Scotland and the emergency services.
The temporary road closures that will be in place on IRONMAN 70.3 Edinburgh race day are implemented under the Road Traffic Regulation (Special Events) Act 1994, and apply to all vehicles, including bicycles, not involved in the event. We would ask that: • Avoid parking on the bike course for safety reasons.• Pedestrians can cross the course at any time when safe to do so, please take extra care.• Essential access for carers will be facilitated. Please contact [email protected]• There are NO RESTRICTIONS at any time to the emergency services• DETOUR ADVICE: The A1, A720 City Bypass are not affected by the event and may provide the best alternative
