Superintendents for the current school year.Dr. Carroll Smith was to serve the first half ofthe school year and Dr. Richard Lanaghanwould serve the second half of the schoolyear. Dr. Smith began his service to theschool district in late August and amazinglythe first half of the school year is done. Thedays progressed to weeks and then tomonths as Fall turned to Winter and the holi-day season came and went. A new year wascelebrated and now we are completingJanuary and February Is upon us. AsFebruary approaches, Dr. Smith completeshis service and transfers the leadership roleto Dr. Lanaghan.
The school district appreciates Dr. Smith forhis service to the school district during thisschool year. Thank you for assisting theschool district as the Board of Education pro-gresses toward securing a permanentSuperintendent for 2012/13 and the future.
As the Board continues the superintendentsearch process, the school district now wel-comes Dr. Lanaghan as he begins his serviceas Interim Superintendent for the second halfof this school year. Both Dr. Lanaghan andDr. Smith served the Byron School District inprevious years when it needed interim super-intendents [Dr. Lanaghan in 1998 and Dr.Smith in 2004/05]. Having knowledge of theschool district and previous experience in thedistrict provides the background needed to
provide quality leadership in this year oftransition.
Thus, the school district looks forward tocontinuing the successes achieved during thefirst half of the year as Dr. Lanaghan joins usfor the remaining portion of 2012/13. Dr.Lanaghan, we welcome you to Byron and lookforward to working with you during the sec-ond half of the school year.
Again, thank you Dr. Smith and welcomeDr. Lanaghan.
BYRON SAYS “THANKS TO DR. SMITH” AND “WELCOMES DR. LANAGHAN.”
In past years the students at Byron High School had a bon-fire as an activity during Homecoming week. This eventbecame a tradition, but was met with mixed opinions andseveral years ago the bonfire activity was stopped andother events were added to homecoming week. Recently, the question of why we do not have the bonfire was raisedto one of the school board members and that board mem-ber brought the issue to the full Board of Education. After afew minutes of discussion on the bonfire issue, the boardwanted the issue brought to the attention of the entire com-munity in the form of a survey. Therefore, please completethe website survey concerning the bonfireevent so that the Board of Education, the teachers and staff of Byron HighSchool, and the entire district willknow your views. Having this informa-tion will help the Board determinehow to proceed concerning thebonfire event in the future.
The Bonfire Survey is on theschool website at www.byron226.org
If you have not completedthis and you wish to voiceyour opinion, please do so beforeFebruary 10, 2012.

Technology courses at the high school are continuing to address the need for rigor in the class-room as well as establish a pinpointed effort in giving BHS students a leg up in endeavors afterhigh school.
Several high school instructors have been working on aligning courses at Byron High School withcollege courses at Rock Valley College. In doing this, they are putting the wheels in motion togive students in Byron the opportunity to take advantage of articulated credit agreements.Students can receive college credit for approved courses completed in high school.
Presently there are six courses waiting approval from RVC:
• Family and Consumer Science Department – Parenting (CHD 100 for 3 credits),Child Care I and Child Care II (CHD 105 for 3 credits)
• Business Department – Accounting (ATG 106 for 1 credit) and Advanced Accounting (ATG 107 for 1 credit)
• Engineering/Drafting Department – CADD I (MET 108 for 3 credits)
There are three courses that are already articulated with RVC in our Auto TechnologyDepartment – Auto I, Auto II and Auto III. Once a student takes these BHS courses, earning a Bor better, and enrolls at RVC, they will be eligible to receive college credit for ATM 105, ATM 106and ATM 114 – a total of 10 credit hours.
So how does the process work? While still in high school, the student completes the high schoolcourse that is covered with an articulated agreement. After graduation the student chooses tocontinue their education at RVC, and fills in an application for articulated credit when register-ing. A meeting ensues which lays out the number of credits that the student will be receivingthat will apply to the RVC degree or certificate of choice. The student must then complete thesame amount of credit hours in the same discipline to establish eligibility for articulated credit. The student will not be charged any tuition or fees for the articulated credit coursework complet-ed at BHS, and will receive a T on their college transcripts signifying their completion of thosecourses.
Through our technology instructors’ efforts to work with RVC’s High School Connections, we arehoping to continue to provide opportunities for our students to be college and career ready.

The Byron High School Key Club will host their annual Community Blood Drive on February 16. Staff fromthe Rock River Valley Blood Center will draw blood between 11 AM and 5 PM.
If you are at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generalgood health, you should be eligible to donate blood. One in three people will need blood and you neverknow when you are someone you love might be that one.
This year the Key Club is happy to announce the addition of double red blood cell donations, a donationprocess that allows blood centers to draw only those blood components that are needed for transfusion topatients. The rest of the blood is immediately returned to the donor.
The Rock River Valley Blood Center is the sole supplier of blood and related services to OSF Saint Anthony,Rockford Memorial, Swedish American, Beloit Memorial, Edgerton Hospital and Health Services, FreeportHealth Network, Harvard Memorial and Rochelle Community hospitals. The Rock River Valley Blood Centerneeds to collect 965 units each week to meet area patient needs.
By hosting this drive, the Byron High School Key Club is helping to save lives in our community. Join us insharing the Gift of Life. For more information or to schedule an appointment contact Becky Little at 234-5491*226.
