As special cases, exceptionally talented students from Class VIII may be allowed to appear at the discretion of the Regional Coordinator. Please note that the RMO is the first step in selecting the Indian team for the IMO! This requires special talent in problem- solving and interest in Mathematics. It is not meant for the average or even good student who does not have this. Where and when does the test take place? The Regional Mathematical Olympiad for West Bengal is usually held on the first Sunday of December at the various test centres. In 2014, it will be held on December 07, 2014. Current centres: Balurghat, Bankura, Berhampore, Burdwan, Contai, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Kharagpur, Kolkata, Krishnanagar, Mohanpur, Narendrapur, Purulia, Raiganj, Santiniketan and Siliguri. A student will have to choose two different centres convenient to him/her. The coordinators may cancel a centre under unforeseen circumstances or if the number of candidates opting for a particular center is small. Also, in order to avoid problem(s) arising out of accommodating too may candidates in a centre, they may allot the centre of his/her second choice to an applicant. What is the structure of the test? The RMO will consist of two tests, the first of duration 2 hours and the second of 3 hours. The first test will be based on multiple-choice questions (MCQ), and in the second about 6 to 7 problems will be asked which the applicants will have to solve. We shall grade all the answer-scripts of the first MCQ-based test and based on the performance of the participants in it (i.e., the first test), we shall select an appropriate number of participants whose answer-scripts of the second test will be graded.
