This past year, the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation was created to help securefunding to restore the DeSoto Theatre to its former splendor. With assistance from the FoxTheatre Institute, the tireless work of many volunteers and generous donations from ourmembers and friends, the rehabilitation process has begun with the repair of the ornateplasterwork in the vestibule and the complete remodeling of the upstairs meeting rooms.Although much has been done, many more restoration projects are needed.

Message from the Director

T o those of you unfamiliarwith the process of how

we select our shows for eachseason, a small primer is in or-der. Each year a ReadingCommittee is appointed, andmembers are allowed to makerecommendations to the com-mittee. Ultimately, after havingbeen given a set of directivesand guidelines, the committeepresents a slate of 18 possibleplays and/or musicals to theBoard of Directors, who will ei-ther approve of make changesto the slate. Once determined, ballots aresent annually to the membership to vote, with scripts being available for perusal, andwrite-ups posted about each selection.Later this year a Reading Committee willconvene to start the process of selectingshows for our 2014-15 season. I mention all of this as a prelude to mydiscussion of Oliver Twist. This was a playthat the Reading Committee almost unani-

mously selected, the Board ap-proved of, and the membershipoverwhelmingly voted in (it dou-bled the combined votes of thetwo challengers). The irony ofthat is that I’m not sure howmany people in the process, much less how many people inthe theatre today, know exactlywhich version of Oliver Twistthis is, despite massive at-tempts at explaining it. Spar-knotes describes the originalDickens novel as “a Children’sStory, an Adventure Story, and

a Novel of Social Protest”. Pretty rare tohave any work with that kind of description. What started out as a newspaper serial, inwhich Dickens decried The Poor Laws of1834, evolved eventually into a 53 Chapternovel, which has been made into severalmovies and a highly successful musical,Oliver!, which I’ve heard this play beingcalled numerous times. This version isdefinitely NOT the musical; it is a fairly

Message from the Producer

When Wayne first ap-proached me about pro-

ducing Oliver Twist with him Iagreed right away. I knew whata wonderful director he wasand the amazing shows that healways brings to the stage. Then reality sank in and I real-ized what I had gotten myselfinto, Oliver Twist is an extreme-ly difficult show! The cast, crew, and production team re-ally had a lot on their plateswhen they decided to becomea part of this show.As producer, I would like to firstthank everyone who helped with our audi-tions. Auditions ran very smoothly and that iswhat a producer prays for. Thanks PamShoemaker for heading up all of the volun-teers for us. Next, thanks to all the local busi-nesses who have sponsored at some leveland/or allowed us to hang our show postersin their windows. The amazing posters thatwere created by our own Megan Keating whoI know one day shall be taken from us to doBroadway posters. Thank you again Megan

for sharing your talent with us.Thanks to Chuck Bryant for doingour wonderful headshots that canbeen seen out front. A huge thanksgoes out to Nelle Reagan at WRGA,Elizabeth Davis at WLAQ and MattDavis with 95.7 The Ridge for hav-ing us on their radio shows to talkabout Oliver Twist. Many thanks goout to the cast and crew, along withthe parents who have helped somuch along the way with this workof love. Last but not least as I speakof this "work of love", I would like tothank my husband, Wayne Jones, for taking me along on his journey

back in time. His love for this theatre, chil-dren, and fellow actors shines so brightly ineverything he does. Oliver Twist has been noexception. Now I invite you to sit back and travel back intime with us. Open your hearts and minds aswe present to you...Oliver Twist.

faithful adaptation of what was and re-mains a dark drama, about a boy subjectedto unusual cruelty, simply because he wasan orphan, and was somehow assumedresponsible for his station in life, and uponhis escape from his cruel existence, findshimself unwittingly joining a band ofthieves, and almost being killed before hisrescue and redemption. This is a powerfulstory, but not always a pretty one. Thereare killings, cruel behavior, and the occa-sional profane word. The playwright hastaken some liberties with the original work, changing some of the story and eliminatingsome fairly well known characters and sto-ry lines to move the story along. There are24 different scene locations in this play (theplaywright started with 26, and we com-bined a couple), making the traditionalstandard set totally unworkable in such aplay. As such, we are quite liberally usingall parts of our stage, from the back wallout into our side aprons, for multiple loca-tions, as well as some projector images fora few of the scenes that we only visit once, which is most of the locations. This is afast moving story that we tell; in fact our“Scene I” actually takes Oliver from the or-phanage to the workhouse to the Sower-berry’s to London! So much has been asked of so many todo this production, which is as complicated(or more so ) to stage than any musical Ihave ever been involved with. Once wewere able to take the stage on July 30, wehave done our best to work each scenechange as close to actual as possible, anincredible burden on cast and crew alike.Their dedication and willingness to adapt tothis while also developing their characters, weaning themselves from their scripts, andrefining their British accents (the cast, notthe crew!) is greatly appreciated—withoutthis hard work and dedication this showfrankly would not have been watchable. As you can imagine, the crew has to be ontheir collective toes during such a produc-tion as this. My Assistant Director, CarolMurchland, also agreed to become ourStage Manager, and has assembled a ded-icated, hard-working crew that has madethis production the “well-oiled machine”that has evolved from that first day onstage less than 4 weeks ago. You will seein a few moments how instrumental ourlighting team of Chuck Morris and KimBrackett, along with our trusty spot opera-tors have been in actually creating some

settings while enhancing many more; oursound guru, Jim Moore, who has added adimension to the show that I believe willtake it to another level; our costume team, led by Becky Magruder and Holly Bryant, who will help you step back into 1837—noeasy task; our make-up crew, who havequite a task, given the ordeals our castmust go through during this story; our setteam, led by Don Rusaw, with major helpfrom Becky Magruder, Ben Peck, and oth-ers, who have supported my vision andhave created a very special picture for you;and of course the people “outside the pe-riphery” who are so vital to getting you intoyour seat and, once there, making yourexperience enjoyable. I’m speaking of ourGraphics Artist (and resident genius) Me-gan Keating; our wonderful House Crew, led by House Manager Kim Dixon; our Pro-motions and Publicity Team, led by AllisonC. Dolbeer, who also is helping us back-stage; our dedicated Box Office Team, ledby Office Manager AND cast member MaryOrtwein; and our photographer, the talent-ed Chuck Bryant. My final thanks goes to my wonderful, lovely, dedicated, and indispensable Pro-ducer, Angela Jones, who also has thethankless job of going home with me aftereach rehearsal and hearing the same stuffshe has just heard all night. Thank you,Darling, for taking on this enormous chal-lenge. I definitely owe you one! I close with a note of sadness. This sum-mer’s big variety show, Broadway Spectac-ular 4, saw the last performance by atreasured member of our RLT family, Mr.Jack Floyd. Only 4 days after we closedproduction, Jack was found dead at hisresidence, sending shock waves throughus all. I want to dedicate each and everyperformance of this production to the mem-ory of a man who truly loved being at RLT,and who was truly loved by us all. We’llmiss you, buddy. Thank you for your support. You proba-bly don’t realize how much your mere pres-ence is greatly appreciated, especiallyconsidering the numerous other entertain-ment choices that are available to you. Wein turn hope to reward that support with amemorable experience for you. Enjoy.

Robert Moulard(Mr. Sowerberry/ Narrator)This 13-time Roman Award loserwas cast in this play not because ofhis sunny personality or his ability toWork Well With Others, and certain-ly not because of the fierce hardgem-like flame of his thespic genius, but mostly because he is a compul-sive auditioner and simply will nottake a hint. When he sees an audi-tion notice he does not say, "Aw,shoot, it's just a scrawny roadrunnerand the last time I chased him I fellinto a mile-deep canyon and gotclobbered with a 300-ton boulder."Nooooooo! He gets down the Acme

Products catalog and tries to de-cide between the rocket skatesand the earthquake pills. Honestly. When he is not wasting every-body's time at auditions, he can beseen performing very locally withhis band Orpheus and The WhiteTrash at apartment eviction partiesand pawn shop parking lots. MrMoulard lives in a gingerbreadhouse in The Deep Dark Forestand loves a cut-throat game of GoFish with his cat Stinky Pudding, who cheats. Fair Warning: Thereexists the possibility, however re-mote, that Mr. Moulard will be castin future productions at RLT (in facthe has been cast in A StreetcarNamed Desire and A ChristmasCarol) but you must remember thisis community theater and we mustmake do with the resources wehave. If only more of you menwould show up at auditions.....
