Products in the Restylane family should not be used by people with previousbad allergies, particularly to microorganisms known as gram-positive bacteria,or by people with serious allergies to drugs that have previously requiredin-hospital treatment. These products should not be used by people withbleeding disorders. Products should not be injected anywhere except theskin, just under the skin (Perlane and Perlane-L only), or in the lips (Restylaneonly). Restylane-L and Perlane-L should not be used by anyone with a knownallergy to lidocaine. Use at the site of skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts,or infection should be postponed until healing is complete. In these instances,product use could delay healing or make your skin problems worse. Aftertreatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, or tender-ness. These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than 7 days innasolabial folds and less than 14 days in lips. Swelling may be more likely in pa-tients under 36 years, and bruising may be more likely in patients over 35 years.Rarely, the doctor may inject into a blood vessel, which can damage the skin.Although rare, red or swollen small bumps may occur. If you have had facialcold sores before, an injection can cause an outbreak. To avoid bruising andbleeding, you should not use the products if you have recently used drugs

that thin your blood or prevent clotting. Products should not be used duringpregnancy, when breastfeeding, or in patients under 18 years for nasolabialfolds. Treatment volume should be limited to 6.0 mL in wrinkles and folds,such as nasolabial folds, and limited to 1.5 mL per lip (Restylane only), asgreater amounts significantly increase moderate and severe injection site re-actions. The safety or effectiveness of treatment in areas other than nasolabialfolds and lips (Restylane only) has not been established in controlled clin-ical studies. Local residents looking for ways to help the hungry, putwinter clothes on the backs of struggling families and benefitat-risk students can do all of that and more by contributing toPeople to People, a well-respected non-profit organizationserving the Rockland County community. This fall, the outreachgroup is furthering it humanitarian objectives by collaboratingwith local businessman Paul Marks, President of Nanuet'sLeader Carpet, Hardwood & Tile.

Earlier this year, Marks approached People to People Executive Director DianeSerratore, about arranging a special raffle with a $10,000 flooring makeover

designed by HGTV's Taniya Nayak, as a grand prize. The proceeds of the rafflewill go toward the charitable organization. Between now and October 31,

raffle tickets are being sold for $10 each, both at the Leader Carpet storeand online at www.leadercarpet.com. The winning ticket will be drawn

on November 3rd at the store. A designer on the cable network's“Designed to Sell” program, Nayak will also hand out prizes to the

second and third place winners. Both the flooring and the designare worth a total of $20,000.

There's no doubt that People to People has made an impacton many Rockland families over the years. One service thatis appreciated during the fall season is the “Back to Schoolwith Dignity” program. The initiative provides essentialschool supplies to at-risk students, making it possible forthem to start the school year with confidence.

Not all students have the capability of doing the kind of on-line research that is required in today's classrooms, so toprovide these students with the same opportunities as theirpeers, People to People teams up with PCReNew, a projectof the Rockland County PC User Group. The communityis encouraged to donate its old computers, either laptops or

desktop machines, which are then wiped clean using asoftware program based on U.S. Department of Defense stan-

dards. The machines are provided to families on a first-come,first-served basis.

Serratore notes that without the help of people like Marks andothers such as local churches, the Rockland County Social Services

Department, teachers and neighbors who alert Serratore and herstaff to the needs of struggling families, People to People would be un-

able to do its work. Approximately 95 cents out of every dollar that is spentby People to People is returned to sustain the organization's many programs.

But it's not only families who have been affected by the economic downturn,added Serratore. Senior citizens and military veterans are also vulnerable, especiallyin these times of rising costs and cutbacks to medical benefits. A 2,500 square-footwarehouse, equipped with walk-in refrigerators and freezers, stocks groceries andother items. People to People volunteers hand out meat, poultry, fresh fruits andvegetables, canned goods, other food staples and personal hygiene items to itsneedy recipients.

In addition, Serratore explained that People to People, which is recognized as oneof the county's “four-star” charities, helps needy families overcome the long-termchallenges they face by referring them to other support services and organizations.Assistance from many quarters is essential to all charitable organizations, but the needto implement fundraising initiatives that are efficient, reliable and above all sustain-able is important, she said. That's especially true since the number of struggling fam-ilies has increased in recent years. “Once upon a time the families we're helping todaywould have been considered middle income, but not anymore,” said Serratore.

To receive help, Serratore said families must go through an income verificationprocess. People to People provides aid to single people making $24,000 or less a yearand to families of four with an income of $40,000 per year, which is considerablymore than the federal poverty guidelines, added Serratore. The federal governmentcaps income at $11, 170 per year for a single person and $23,050 for a family of four.

“Given that this is one of the country's most expensive regions to live in,” said Ser-ratore, “the need to help many is crucial. And that is why Marks' support will make

a huge difference to the organization,” she noted. “Paulis putting a lot of energy into supporting us,” saidSerratore, who also relies heavily on individual andcorporate donations, as well as funding from thefederal government and grants from both the countyand the state.

As a well-known business in the Nanuet area, Marks hasestablished a reputation for helping others. Last year, hedonated over 100 turkeys to People to People as well asother food pantries in the area. But his charitable waysstarted long before he bought the carpet store on Route59. In 1994, shortly after he left his job in a New YorkCity flooring company, Marks galvanized his local com-munity, asking them to donate clothing and other itemsto an Upper East Side shelter he knew about. That act ofkindness resulted in more donations than he could everhave imagined, he recalled.

Marks, who was born in the Bronx but moved to NewCity when he was 13, has a burning desire to help theless fortunate and to give back to his community. Hisappetite for humanitarianism grew when he took overLeader Carpet eight years ago. More recently, Marks donated $10,000 worth of floor-ing to the “Spirit of Rockland” Special Victims Unitlocated at Good Samaritan Hospital in Nyack. The3,000 square foot facility opened its doors in 2010under the leadership of Rockland County DistrictAttorney Thomas Zugibe. It provides care and supportto victims of child abuse, domestic violence, elderabuse, internet crimes against children, sex offenderviolations and rape.

Serratore said it's the kind of donations that Marks andothers make that really matter to families, many ofwhom are down on their luck because a parent has losta job or a serious health crisis has emerged. “We like tothink we're helping struggling neighbors get throughdifficult times with dignity,” she said. While therecession hasn't affected donations to the non-profitorganization Serratore is happy to receive ongoingcontributions. “I think most people who donate to usrealize that food and other necessities are vital toeveryone in our community.”

Foxwood Pond Clean Up To Help Save Wildlife–Seeks Volunteers–The Hudson Valley Humane Society and the Villageof Suffern are organizing a clean up of FoxwoodPond starting at 9:30 a.m. Foxwood Pond, locatedon Foxwood Drive, is home to mallard ducks,geese, fox, deer, turtles and fish, among otherwildlife. The Pond is a popular fishing site for resi-dents and visitors and is home for the annual Fish-ing Derby. The Pond has become littered withfishing line, hooks, glass and other debris which isendangering wildlife and visitors.
