Although apartments were hard to come by after World War II, the couple were lucky to find a one room apartment in upper Manhattan and they were happy to be married. Nate worked in the Bluebell Lumber Yard in Washington Heights. While Bella stayed home with their three sons. Son number one, Howard, age 64, lives in Yonkers with his wife Sonna. They have two sons and a daugh-ter. They have given Bella four great grandchildren. Son number two, Paul, age 62, lives in White Plains with his wife Rhona. They have one daughter. Son number three, Marty, age 59, writes books on athletics for young boys. He lives in Nyack with his wife Elaine. They have two sons

and one daughter.

Bella and Nate came to River-Walk five years ago. Sadly, Nate passed away a year later. Bella is an active member of many of RiverWalk’s activities. She often helps set up for several of our Activity Programs. We would be lost without her help—especially in BINGO. She is an avid reader and is never without a book. She also enjoys the daily walks she

takes with her friend, Ben Busak.

We wish Bella continued good health and many happy years at

RiverWalk.

Bella Schupak was born in Brooklyn on New York’s east side. Her father owned area gro-cery stores and her mother, a home maker, helped out in the family stores. Bella is the oldest of three children. She has fond memories of her two younger brothers, Bernie and Joseph, as well as the tree that grew in their back yard, discarded gas jets and the tin tub that her mother used for bathing the children. Her memories of the grocery store in-clude milk cans, sacks of coffee and soap flakes and her father’s

grip.

Bella attended Public School 153 and James Madison High School. She often went to the movies at The Avalon and the Kingsway on Kings Highway. She was thrilled when her father

purchased a Chevrolet.

Bella worked at Woolworth’s before attending business school. Her business school education led to a succession of jobs in an ad-vertising agency. She did very well and was soon earning $75 a

week!

Bella met her husband Nate on a blind date. He was a member of the Army’s 9th Division and was awarded two purple hearts and a bronze star. The couple married in September of 1946, six months

after they met.

RiverWalk Happenings... Monet’s garden in Giverney has been recreated in an abbreviated garden at the New York Bo-tanical Garden. We visited this breath taking exhibit and were amazed by the beauty before our eyes. There are more than 150 varieties of annu-als and perennials, known to have been planted by Monet himself. The green arches will soon be covered by climbing roses—just like on the Grand Allee. The water lilies, many directly de-scended from Monet’s, are beginning to bloom in the outdoor Hardy Pool. As the seasons change, so will the flowers—Spring blooms will give way to Summer blooms and then Fall blooms. By the end of the exhibit over 600 varieties will have had their day in the sun and we are planning on

seeing all of them.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on

my face.

So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could

turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don’t question myself anymore— I’ve even earned

the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day (if I

feel like it).

At Day’s End

Is anybody happier because

you passed his way?

Does anyone remember that

you spoke to him today?

The day is almost over, and

its toiling time is through;

Is there anyone to utter now

a kindly word of you?

Can you say tonight, in parting with the day that’s

slipping fast,

That you helped a single brother of the many that you

passed?

Is a single heart rejoicing

over what you did or said;

Does the man whose hopes were fading, now with cour-

age look ahead?

Did you waste the day, or lose it? Was it well or sorely

spent?

Did you leave a trail of kindness, or a scar of discon-

tent?

As you close your eyes in slumber, do you think that God will say, “You have earned one more tomorrow by

the work you did today”?

Information about the Month of July named this month for Julius Caesar since Caesar’s birthday

fell on the 14th of the month.

In July we celebrate baked beans, the bikini, blueberries, the culinary arts, horseradish, grilling, hot dogs, ice cream, peaches, picnics, parks, family reunions, learn Arabic and ten-nis. July also raises awareness

July’s birthstone is the Ruby

and the Larkspur is the flower.

July was the fifth month in the early Roman calendar. It was named Quintilis, meaning fifth and had 36 days. Romulus reduced it to 31 and Numa Pompilius to 30. Later, Julius Caesar restored one day giving it 31. In 44 B.C., Mark Antony

RiverWalk Happenings… (continued) The Eldridge Street Synagogue opened its doors on September 4, 1887, just in time for the Jewish High Holidays. Hundreds of newly arrived immigrants from Russia and Poland gathered here to pray, socialize and build a community. It was the first time in America that Jews of Eastern Europe had built a syna-gogue from the ground up. The synagogue flourished until the 1940’s. Membership and

resources declined and the main sanctuary was used less and less. The synagogue was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1996 and more than $18.5 mil-lion was raised to restore it to its original grandeur. The Museum completed the Eldridge Street Synagogue restoration in Decem-ber 2007, the synagogue’s 120th anniversary. The crowning piece of the Museum’s restoration is a magnificent new stained-glass window by artist Kiki Smith and architect Deborah Gans. We had a wonderful tour of the syna-gogue with a very informative

guide.

RiverWalk visited Temple Beth Abraham for our annual spring lunch, as usual we had a great time. The Westchester Klezmer Program provided the entertainment and they were outstanding. Our hosts treated us like royalty and served us fresh made bagels and muffins, lox plat-ters, brownies, cake, cookies, fruit salad, coffee and tea. Everyone re-ceived a hand made knitted scarf as a thank you gift for visiting. It is

wonderful to be part of a community that is so loving and giving.
