Riverview Village Rally
and Sign Dedication By Staff
Residents from Colonial Place, Riverview and all across the area gathered on Sunday, October 8th, 2017 for a day of fun and celebration centered around the dedication of a new sign marking the Riverview Village area along Granby Street.
The new sign, which is under construction, will be placed in the median at the southern end of the Granby Street bridge, and will mark the entrance to the Riverview Village business corridor. The dedication ceremony was attended by an en-thusiastic crowd of well-wishers and included remarks by
Mayor Kenneth Alexander, Councilpersons Terry Whibley and Andria McClel-lan, Congressman Bobby Scott, Virginia Senator Lyn-wood Lewis, Jr., and other supporters. The Riverview Village Business Association also recognized Bill and Sha-ron Nusbaum, Richard Levin and Mary Barnett for their generous support and their dedication to the improve-ment of the Riverview busi-ness community.
In addition to the dedication ceremony, the day was marked by other events including a 1K foot race and an outdoor party at MJ’s Tavern, as well as the annual Front Porch Art Walk. The bi-weekly “Village Days” event at the corner of Granby Street and Lavalette Avenue was also well-attended.
Many thanks to the participants and especially to the organiz-ers, David Oliver and Ted Warren!

COLONIAL Place / Riverview Civic League General Meeting Minutes
October 9, 2017; Eggleston Center
President Tobie Serafim opened the meeting at 6:39pm. The Secretary declared a quorum, with more than 15 members present.
NPD Neighborhood Resource Officer Josh White presented the monthly report on crime activity. Recent reports of gunshots from the 500 block of Maryland Avenue were associated with a party and NPD responded when called. Larcenies from autos were reduced over the past month. We were reminded to lock our car doors and remove valuables from our vehicles when unattended, even in our own driveways. A number of questions on specific issues were asked and answered.
President Serafim introduced Paul Forehand of the City’s Department of Public Works, Transpor-tation Division, who spoke on the City’s proposal to enlarge the system of designated bike lanes. In particular, he described a proposed route toward Ocean View which would run through Lafa-yette Park and the Riverview neighborhood in order to avoid the traffic and dangers of the parallel section of Granby Street. Improvements will be paid through a grant which is expected to be awarded by the end of the year. Mr. Forehand encouraged anyone with additional questions to contact him at (757) 374-1712.
The Vice-President introduced candidates for the office of 89th Congressional District representa-tive: Terry Hurst and Jerrauld “Jay” Jones, who each spoke and answered questions about their plans.
The previous month’s minutes were approved.
Treasurer’s Report – we have a total of $15,491.47 in our checking and CD accounts.
The Membership committee reported a total of 140 members at present.
The Crime Prevention Committee reported that they are doing a streetlight survey in October and asked for residents to help report streetlight problems.
The Community Improvement Committee had nothing new to report.
Attendees were thanked for their donations to the Roper Home Sock Drive, and socks collected will be delivered to the Home. Additional donations may be taken there as well.
Old Business: The President reported that the recent Riverview Village Business Association rally and sign dedication was well-attended and a great success. The Annual Art Walk was a success as well.
The President adjourned the meeting at 7:50pm.
Respectfully submitted,
John W. Robertson
Secretary

Finally, we will be entering the holiday season soon. That means friends and relatives will travel to visit you or you will travel to them. If you have out of town visitors, please re-mind them to remove from their car any valuables or anything that is visible inside the car that may peak interest of a thief (i.e. an empty duffle bag). If you are going to travel for the holidays, please let a trusted neighbor know that you will be gone and to please keep an eye on your property.

Local Concert to Benefit Area Homeless
by Staff
There will be a benefit concert at the 80/20 Burger Bar at 123 W 21st Street on Saturday, November 18 to collect clothing items to support local non-profit Blankets for the Homeless.
According to a recent Virginian-Pilot story by Arleen Spenceley:
Rick Isotalo, a petty officer first class in the Navy and deputy disbursing officer on USS Eisenhower, is also in the band Muckrakes. He heard of the needs of local homeless people for additional clothing as the cold weather season approaches. Together with a second band, Bad Weather Birds, they decided to have a con-cert at the restaurant and help provide for the area’s homeless population by collecting socks and other clothing.
The socks must be new, he said – but attendees can donate other items, too.
"While we're preparing for the colder months, any thermal items, thermal gloves, thermal socks, thermal underwear ... are essential," said Mariah Smith, 23, founder of Blankets for the Homeless.
She is a senior at Regent University, where she studies psychology. She started the organization at 17, after she saw a homeless man at a Sonic.
"It was freezing cold that night," she said. "We just happened to have a blanket in the back of our van. I got out and gave him the food we ordered and the blanket. He was so grateful."
In establishing the organization, she learned of the many needs, besides blankets, that local homeless folks have.
"Shoes, hoodies, backpacks, tents, toiletries," she said – plus socks.
She collects the items and distributes them throughout Hampton Roads. She's grateful that Isotalo arranged for the donation.
"That was the most amazing surprise," she said. "Blankets for the Homeless is a small organization, so any help that we get like this is more than we could even hope for."
