Riverside Allergy Awareness (Mr. Meek and Mrs. Palmer)
There have been some discussions about the expectations of food aller-
gies at Riverside Schools. Here is what we consider when it comes to
peanut/tree nut allergies.
1. All Riverside kitchens are peanut/tree nut free.
2. Any snacks sent to classrooms for birthdays, celebrations, or
other classroom parties should be peanut/tree nut free. Any
purchased or homemade snack should include the ingredient list.
A recipe is OK to send if made at home.
3. We do allow peanut butter to be brought in a lunch. We ask
that students not share/trade lunch items.
If there are any changes to a specific classroom regarding food allergies,
parents will be notified in writing.
Riverside Choir Students Perform in Honor Choir (Kelsey Burns)
On January 19th, these 6 nominated members of the high school choir spent
the day at Iowa Western with other nominated students from Southwest Iowa
at the SWICDA Honor Choir event. They rehearsed all day and held a concert
at 7pm that evening on the IWCC campus. Congrats to these individuals on a
great day of choral music!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION—PLEASE TAKE NOTE!
In an effort to protect students, staff and visitors with chemical
sensitivities and to create a safe and healthy environment, River-
side Community Schools are asking that everyone minimize the
use of any fragrances in the workplace.
Employees/students should refrain from bringing air freshener
products, essential oils/diffusers, wearing heavy perfumes/cologne/
essential oils, other personal care products such as body sprays,
hand lotions, cleaning products or solutions, etc. Workspace areas
and areas that are enclosed such as restrooms are also included in
this.
Acceptable use of products that are labeled as unscented, scent-
free or fragrance free by the manufacturer are suggested and rec-
ommended as safe and appropriate for Riverside Community
Schools.
Riverside Community School sincerely appreciates you abiding by
this guideline so that all students, employees and visitors can enjoy
an environment that does not make them sick, or be absent due to
an illness related to heavy fragrances or scents.

Students and Staff took on each other in a basketball game on January
19, 2017, in an effort to raise money for Coaches vs Cancer. Otis
Matejka provided the commentary during the game while Mrs. Graves
was the ref. Mrs. Keener and Miss Fenske as well as Lydia Wede and
Rosie Brown led the crowd with cheers. It was a hard fought game but
the teachers were able to come out with a win. We will have pictures
throughout this issue.

Special Visitor to Mrs. Perkins Class (Jen Perkins)
Singer/songwriter/author Lori Lynn Ahrends stopped by Mrs. Perkins’
3rd grade class to share some music and collect the students’ draw-
ings/illustrations that she hope to use in a book she is publishing to
accompany her latest song, “A Hundred Kisses Every Day.”
Ms.Ahrends is a friend and mentor to Mrs. Perkins.
Student Writing
It is a pleasure to get samples of students’ writing. Mrs. Ravlin submitted the following story by
Julienne Schutt. Enjoy!
The Broken Leg
By: Julienne Schutt
Dedicated to my friend Sophia Fenner because she is always there for me
Hi! You are probably wondering why I am so grumpy. Sorry! I’m telling you why. Ok! Here is the
story. Ok. I am Jules’s leg and as I said, I am sooooo grumpy. Anyway, Julienne was following her
brother up the long brown stairs. I tried to tell her that it was not a good idea, but she did not pay
any attention to me! Why would she I am just a leg to her? Anyway this was 5 years ago. She was 2.
Suddenly, Jules’s other leg slipped!!! Jules did 3 summersaults down. Ooooouucchhh! Her mom
came dashing toward her. She cries loud and we were off to the hospital! The hospital looked a
little scary but half of me was broke. But she did not break me, although she broke half of me. She
actually broke her femur (which is her thigh bone). Funny story, right? NO!!!!! And after we went to
the hospital and got the cast, I hated that cast, I had to walk stupid and even when I got the cast off,
Julienne still made me walk stupid! Well, there’s the story! Well, I’m gonna hit the hay. Good Night!
