    State Band andOrchestra Festival

On Wednesday, May 4 and Thursday, May 5 the TriCounty High School and Eighth Grade bands traveledto Reeths Puffer High School to attend the MichiganSchool Band and Orchestra Associations State Bandand Orchestra Festival.

Bands must play a march, a piece from a required listand a selected number. Festival participants are judgedon the three concert numbers in the area of tone qual-ity, intonation, rhythm, technique and interpretation bya panel of three judges. They also must sight-read twopieces for a fourth judge, and these grades are then aver-aged together for a final rating.

Both the High School Band and the Eighth Grade band received First Division Ratings. Congratulations

Can golfers break worldrecord for speed golf?

World record or not, it sure will be fun as GrandRapids golfers hit the links this summer for the areasonly speed golf league. For those seeking the world re-cord, they will have to beat Christopher Smith who inOctober 2005, shot an amazing five-under-par 65 in 44minutes and 6 seconds, setting the lowest-ever speedgolf score of 109.06 (golf score combined with the timeit takes to play 18 holes). His record was set at the 5,500-yard Jackson Park Golf Course in south Chicago

Grand Rapids Golfers will have their shot at train-ing for the record during the 6 week speed golf leagueheld at The Highlands Golf Club. Speed golfers can takea maximum of 6 clubs. They must carry their own bag(no carts). The league starts June 1st and runs (literally)for six weeks.

Maybe we should all be playing speed golf. After all,who has time for a regular round of golf these days?says local golf expert and brain child of the speed golfleague, Scott Seifferlein.

Scott Seifferlein is a speaker, author, golf coach anda darned good guy to thousands of West Michigan golf-

ers. To learn more about his Speed Golf League, call(616)802-4969.

    LETTER TO

    THE EDITOR

    Reader would liketo see more

    support for wrestlersTO THE EDITOR:

I would like to say, I read your newspaperevery week to keep up on community events.

So when I saw the full page ad on Our VarsityBasketball players becoming District Cham-pions, it made me proud. It also made mestart to wonder why there is such disparitybetween sports.

The basketball team achieved a great ac-complishment by becoming District Cham-pions and was acknowledged, rightfullyso. My question would be when the Varsity Wrestlers attained the same accomplish-ment, by winning their District Champi-onship on 2/10/2011, there was no suchacknowledgment in the paper. It even goesso far as the day after the Varsity Wrestlerswinning Districts, there was no mention ofit in the morning announcements, but it wasannounced of a loss by the J.V. basketballteam. These wrestlers have had some great

achievements. We have a couple of wrestlerswith 100 plus wins in their careers. We alsohave freshmen wrestlers with winning re-cords they can be proud of. Our wrestlers goout week after week and do their jobs one onone, man against man, this is why I feel theydeserve the same acknowledgment whenearned.

As a proud sponsor of all athletes whogive their all on the mat, the court, the field, Ibelieve they should be treated equally. Theseare our children and grandchildren, tryingto make our District and Community proud,so I would hope in the future our wrestlers would get the acknowledgement that theyalso rightfully deserve.

    STATEPOINT MEDIA

Americans love going online. In fact,a recent study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project and the Wi-FiAlliance found that half of all adults goonline with a laptop using a Wi-Fi con-nection while 40 percent use the Inter-net on mobile phones.

Going online in public is convenient.Public Wi-Fi networks let us check e-mail, update social media profiles, and

shop almost anywhere. But should we?How safe is the personal information wesend over public networks?

Most people dont realize that Wi-Fisignals are just radio waves, and anyonecan listen to what youre sending justas easily as tuning a radio to the rightstation, says Kent Lawson, Founderand CEO of Private CommunicationsCorporation, a new online security tech-nology company.

Thats because the majority of Wi-Fi hotspots in airports, planes, coffeehouses and other public places arentencrypted. That makes them havens fordata thieves whove walked off with mil-lions of Wi-Fi users credit card and So-cial Security numbers.

There are some steps you can take tokeep your information safe, says Law-son.

If youre using public computers, such as those at the library, dont saveanything on them. Make sure to closethe browser and clear the cache whenyoure done. In addition, limit your ac-tivities, because someone might haveinstalled key stroke tracking software, which can watch everything you do, andcapture your log-in information.

If youre using your own computerwith public Wi-Fi access, be even morecareful. For example, be cautious aboutwhat you put in email messages. Creditcard and social security numbers andhome addresses should be avoided.Never bank or shop, unless the site is

secure -- the web addresses should startwith https not http. And turn off filesharing to prevent someone from gain-ing access to your hard drive.

Or, for better peace of mind, you caninstall software that encrypts all datagoing into and out of your computer, such as PCCs Private WiFi. This makesyou invisible to hackers on any publicnetwork, anywhere in the world. Whileantivirus protects you from viruses andfirewalls prevents unauthorized accessto your information while you com-municate, Private WiFi encrypts all theinformation you send. All three work in

    tandem to keep you safe.

If you use your mobile phone to accessthe Internet, make sure you passwordprotect it and install security software. You can also enroll in a back-up/wipingprogram, which backs-up your informa-tion and also can delete it if your phoneis lost or stolen. These services are avail-able from your phones manufacturer oryour wireless provider.

For more tips to keep your informa-tion safe over public Wi-Fi networks, visit www.privatewifi.com or www.pri-vate-i.com.

In this digital age, our lives are in-creasingly lived online, so be sure to in-

    corporate the right protections.

Is it safe to use the Internet in public places?
