MEXICO CITY — Dozens of gunmen believed tied to the hyper-violent Jalisco New Generation Cartel deployed for a com-plex, multi-point dawn ambush meant to kill Mexico City’s police chief in one of the most brazen attacks in Mexico since the equally ruth-less Zetas carved a path of terror across the coun-try nearly a decade ago.

The attackers used grenades and a .50-cali-ber sniper rifle to assault the chief’s armored vehicle early Friday, kill-ing two of the his body-guards and a woman driving by. Police chief Omar García Harfuch was shot in the shoulder, collar bone and the knee but was reported out of danger.

He called the attack “cowardly” and blamed it on the Jalisco cartel, which has established a nearly national presence, from the white-sand beaches of Cancun to Mexico City and the country’s most impor-tant ports, as well as in key border cities tradi-tionally controlled by other cartels.

Police officers who converged on the scene on the capital’s iconic Paseo de la Reforma boulevard in the upscale Lomas neighborhood rounded up a dozen of the shooters, who were hauled off for question-ing, authorities said.

Later Friday, capi-tal police arrested an alleged head of the Jalisco New Genera-tion hitmen, suggesting he could have been the mastermind of the attack, said a Mexico City police official who was not authorized to be quoted by name.

The official said police arrested José Armando Briseño on the east side of the city. Nicknamed “Cow,” he is allegedly the gang’s

chief of hitmen in the city of Tonala in Jalisco.

The attack on the police chief was meticu-lously planned and involved a total of 28 gunmen hired three weeks before, said Ulises Lara, the spokesman for the Mexico City prosecu-tors office. Three sepa-rate possible ambush points were set up on major thoroughfares, including one — which wasn’t used — in the heart of Mexico City, one block from the Inde-pendence Monument.

The gunmen were divided into four dif-ferent cells, and they received ski masks and weapons Thursday night. They were taken to the ambush points at 4 a.m. to lie in wait for their target. They jumped from a truck and

opened fire when Gar-cia’s convoy attempted to pass.

Lara said that of the suspects detained, one is Colombian and the other 11 are Mexicans from the capital and five states — Jalisco, Guer-rero, Nayarit, Chihuahua and Michoacan.

It was the second high-profile attack this month, following the shooting death of a federal judge and his wife, bringing uncomfortable compari-sons to Colombia’s drug wars of the 1980s and ‘90s in which drug traf-fickers routinely targeted judges and police for assassination.

Mexico targeted and dismantled the Zetas cartel after it killed migrants, unsuspecting citizens and officials from 2010 to 2013. But

it remains to be seen whether the government will go after the Jalisco cartel they way it did the Zetas.

“If they (Jalisco) are not made a priority target after this, I don’t know what is happening, something is wrong with the strategy” of the gov-ernment, said security analyst Alejandro Hope.

Mexico used elite military units and worked closely with the United States to go after the Zetas cartel. But now, amid budget cuts and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s policy of not directly confronting the cartels, it is unclear whether the government has the will or ability to fight Jalisco, especially in the middle of the coronavirus pan-demic.

Brazen ambush of Mexico City chief blamed on Jalisco cartelJOHANNESBURG

(AP) — An effort to lift South Africa’s ban on cigarette sales during the country’s coronavi-rus lockdown has failed.

The High Court in the capital, Pretoria, on Fri-day dismissed a bid by the Fair Trade Indepen-dent Tobacco Associa-tion, which represents smaller manufacturers. The group argued that cigarettes should be considered essential because they are addic-tive.

Those who want the ban lifted argue that South Africa’s govern-ment hasn’t explained the science it says it

relied on when impos-ing the ban at the end of March. The government has said it is trying to protect people’s health.

Some critics also warn that the ban fuels the illegal trade of ciga-rettes. The ban outlaws selling tobacco but not the act of smoking.

Anger grew when South Africa lifted its lockdown ban on alcohol sales on June 1.

Another legal chal-lenge to the cigarette ban, with global industry giant British American Tobacco tak-ing South Africa’s gov-ernment to court, has begun.

Court upholds South Africa’s cigarette sales ban in lockdown

PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) — Princeton Uni-versity has announced plans to remove the name of former Presi-dent Woodrow Wilson from its public policy school because of his segregationist views, reversing a decision the Ivy League school made four years ago to retain the name.

University president Christopher Eisgruber said in a letter to the school community Sat-urday that the board of trustees had concluded that “Wilson’s racist views and policies make him an inappropriate namesake” for Princ-eton’s School of Public and International Affairs and the residential col-lege.

Eisgruber said the trustees decided in April 2016 on some changes to make the univer-sity “more inclusive and more honest about its history” but decided to retain Wilson’s name, but revisited the issue in light of the recent kill-ings of George Floyd and others.

Wilson, governor of

New Jersey from 1911 to 1913 and then the 28th U.S. president from 1913 to 1921, supported segregation and imposed it on several federal agencies not racially divided up to that point. He also barred Black students from Princeton while serving as univer-sity president and spoke approvingly of the Ku Klux Klan.

Earlier in the week, Monmouth University of New Jersey removed Wilson’s name from one of its most prominent buildings, citing efforts to increase diversity and inclusiveness. The superintendent of the Camden school district also announced plans to rename Woodrow Wilson High School, one of the district’s two high schools.

“Wilson’s racism was significant and conse-quential even by the standards of his own time,” Eisgruber said, adding that the former president’s segregation-ist policies “make him an especially inappropriate namesake for a public policy school.”
