Maintenance Challenges

Maintenance challenges• Reduce MRO costs• Improve uptime• Experienced maintenance staff retiring• Automation landscape is increasingly complex

– Distributed Architectures– More configurable, intelligent devices– Integration with information systems

Maintenance needs• Maximize uptime by proactively avoiding downtime

– Cost constraints require automated systems– Utilize device intelligence for maintenance purposes

• Maximize uptime by minimizing downtime– Maintenance systems point to cause, not symptom– Automatically generate work orders– Automatically suggest corrective actions

Regulations

• Sarbanes Oaxley Act of 2002– Larger companies that have a CSO, GAO, or strong IT office that realizes that there

is no change management on controllers, etc.– Section 404: requires establishment of controls that reasonably protect against

preventable events that could influence a company’s value. • OSHA

– Knowing that controllers are configured correctly and knowing that someone in the office can not program a controller has merit here.

• Tread Act – Great potential here but industry has resisted so far.

• Homeland Security – Has put a lot of pressure on systems of concern– We have succeeded in the water industry and others

• USDA• ATF• FDA

– Absolutely is concerned with open systems and mistakes that endanger the quality of the product and consumer’s health

• EPA– Effluent discharge and stack emission change management

• FAA– Recently told an airline manufacturing that they needed change management

• TSA– Concerned that the baggage handling equipment does not get alteredSafety & SecuritySafety & SecuritySafety & SecuritySafety & Security

Disaster Recovery

• Case: Pet Food Manufacturer– Computer maintenance lost programs on several key assets. In spite

of manually saving programs on a central server, they ended up using a very old version made by the OEM of the machine.

• Consequences: – Hours of downtime and lost production to be made up with overtime.– Extra cost of indirect labor for remaking the asset configurations.

• Solution: – By managing asset configuration versions automatically in a central

repository and by automatically backing them up, no program is lost. As well, through version control, everyone knows which program to use immediately.

• Benefits: – Save production cost and delivery time issues by always knowing

which program is the right version.– Provide confidence in the process and controller program for the

engineering and maintenance teams.

FactoryTalk Directory Design - Federation

• Data remains distributed in its original, native environment (ie. a controller)

• Clients that need data use directory– Directory acts as a lookup service

• Data is “federated” or “propogated”, not duplicated or copied

• Data is distributed vs. centralized• This model is used today for tags and displays

– Future: Alarms and events, security settings, etc. Tag Database

Runtime Language Switching

• Application languages can be switched dynamically at runtime

– Most user defined strings that are visible at runtime are switchable including all graphic display labels & captions, tooltips, global objects & title bars

– CurrentLanguage Function in expression editor provides method for switching alarms and messages

• Time/Date & Decimal formats are automatically switched based on the locale settings for the current language

Global Objects are used to reduce the development of user defined Faceplates

• Global objects provide the capability to link the appearance and behavior of a base graphic such as a Process Loop Faceplate to multiple references of the object (PID instructions) in the same application

• Global objects are created on global object displays and are called base objects

– All RSView graphic objects can be global objects except for ActiveX controls

– Grouped objects are supported

• Copying a base object to a standard graphic display creates a reference object

• When changes are made to the base object, the referenced objects are changed as well

Operator Faceplates for the IA Operator Workstations

• Ready to use Operator Faceplates are included with the Operator Workstation Software (RSView SE / ME) which take advantage of our Global Object technology:

– PIDE– Discrete 2 State Device– Discrete 3 State Device– Totalizer – Ramp/Soak– Enhanced Select– Alarm– PhaseManager Phase State Monitor

• Faceplates provided both as:– Global Objects suitable for embedding in

custom graphics– “Pop-up” graphic displays.

• Faceplates support tag substitution – you don’t have to manage parameter files.

• Faceplates can be modified if desired. • RSLogix 5000 includes a set of ActiveX

faceplates for use with 3rd party HMI software.

Important Criteria for W/WW - RSView SE…a good fit

• Architecture: headless servers/rich clients– Allows users to be logged in only at clients– No need for user logged in at server– Password aging problems and server access problems

avoided• FactoryTalk provides compliance advantages

– Ex. Audited Logic changes propagated throughout system without need for edits to HMI

• Windows security and account management• Automatic user logout• Desktop Lock and runtime access restrictions• Electronic signature and supervisor verification• Integration with RSMACC for audit trail• Secure internal logging format• Secure Central Logging capability• Logging to FactoryTalk Audit for system wide audit trail
