Greenways
“A greenway is a corridor of protected open space managed for conservation and recreation purposes.”
The Value of Greenways Improved community health &
connectivity• CDC identified greenways as a built
environment that encourages physical activity• Higher use when connecting user with products
or services• Alternative routes to school for children,
increasing physical activity
The Value of Greenways Conservation
• Protect habitats• Provide opportunities to be outside• Preserve and define green space• Decrease pollution• Control flood zones
Safety• Greenways are typically safer then their
surrounding neighborhoods• Adjacent properties have lower crime rate
Liabilities Injuries Conflicts between User Groups Access Adjacent Property Owners Crime and Safety of Users
Risk ManagementRisk Management Action(s)
Injury •Professional trail design and construction•Appropriate trail surfaces•Regular documented inspections to identify maintenance projects, monitor issues, and repairs. •Preventative maintenance.•Restorative maintenance.•Emergency trail access points for park staff or emergency personnel. •Trail closure procedures due to weather or repairs
User Conflict
•Rules and regulations•User education

Access •Planned access areas: Using master planning to identify routes and access points will provide direction and ensure that access is safe, visible, and located at ideal sites. •Maps/publicity: Promotional and informational materials will include directions to each access area, clear mark access sites, and educate neighbors about access points located nearby.•Posted information at each access point: Signage with map, rules, hours and mileage.

Property Owners
•Education: To ensure adjacent landowners are supportive of the project and have buy in and ownership, education will be offered about their rights and legal protection, as well as feedback sessions for trail usage and development. •Signage: Posted in areas as needed to identify as not a part of the greenway to restrict access. •Buffers and natural barriers between greenway and private lands.

Crime & User Safety
•Limited hours of use to sunrise-dusk. •Education of usage time, access areas, rules, and personal safety actions. •Security patrols from local law enforcement or park security. •Design using Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles of natural surveillance, access control, and territoriality •Safe access points: Access areas will be located in lighted and used areas like activity centers and parks. This provides supervision of access points, provides adequate parking, and connects areas that users will want to travel to via greenway.
