Our Story Our story began in 1921 in Shanghai, China. The company grew steadily in the early decades, moving its headquarters to Wilmington, Delaware in the late 1960s. In 1972 Alico became the first foreign life insurance company licensed to sell in Japan, the first step towards becoming a household name. We were well-placed to establish new operations in Central and Eastern Europe in the late 1980s when the political and economic environment in the region changed dramatically. Expansion in Latin America, the Middle East and a liberalized European Union followed, and that growth story continues today.
In March 2010 the latest chapter in our history unfolded when it was announced that our company would merge with MetLife. That merger completed November 2010 creating one global company, meeting the needs of some 90 million customers in over 60 countries.

Established in the erstwhile East Pakistan in 1952, we were the first and so far are the only international company to be granted a licence to offer life and accident insurance in the country, which is quite a big responsibility and one which we do our best to live up to.
Today we have close to 1,000,000 insureds in Bangladesh, and over the last fifty seven years we’ve become very used to listening to the local community and developing our offering according to people’s needs.

American Life Insurance Company (Alico Bangladesh) started full service branch operations in Bangladesh on 15 January 1974 and has since then been marketing individual and group life insurance products under the Insurance Act 1938, Insurance Rules 1958, and other applicable laws. Alico, incorporated in 1921 in Wilmington, Delaware, USA, is the largest international life insurance Company in the world. It is a member company of the American International Group (AIG) that operates life insurance businesses in more than 135 countries. American Life Insurance Company Bangladesh (referred to as the company hereafter) runs its business through its agency offices scattered mostly in big cities such as DHAKA (43), CHITTAGONG (9) and KHULNA (3). Over 2700 career agents are working for the company. The company has a trained and dedicated work force of 223 employees in Bangladesh.
Net premium income received by the company from direct business in 1999 was Tk 1,896.75 million as against Tk 21.12 million in 1981. The figures include both new or first year premiums and renewal premiums derived from its various life insurance plans/schemes such as ordinary life policies, personal accident protection, group life, group medical, and ordinary term insurance. Re-insurance premium paid by the company to its re-insurer abroad was Tk 0.32 million in 1999, when it paid a net amount of commission of Tk 333.94 million. Net claims settled by the company during the year amounted to Tk 75.11 million.
Apart from net premium income derived from direct life insurance business, the company earned Tk 514.81 million in 1999 as interest, dividend, and rent income. Major investments of the company were in short term deposits with banks, national investment bonds, Pratirakkha Sanchaya Patra, shares of companies, ICB-mutual funds, policy loans to holders, fixed deposits and permanent investment in real estate. The assets of the company were valued at Tk 5,900.27 million and the revenue surplus stood at Tk 1,042.29 million in the reference year.
The regional office of the company at Sharjah, Dubai, oversees the administrative and business affairs of Alico Bangladesh. It invests its entire investable surplus locally, mostly in government securities/banks and shares/stocks of companies, thereby allowing usage of its progressively increasing fund in such public interests as infrastructure development, industrialisation and employment generation.

A unique plan that combines protection and savings
Offers you a maximum premium payment term of up to 30 years thereby giving the flexibility of choosing small payments to suit your budgetary needs
The plan is split into 2 phases. The first phase is for a period of 7 years and then the second phase starts (from the 8th year) and includes the rest of the term.
During the first 7 years your savings accumulate and grow and at the end of the 7th year a dividend is declared. This dividend could be up to 40% of the cash value of your plan.
In the second phase, the cash value and dividend are transferred to the Investment & Protection Account (IPA)
From the 8th year onwards, the policy offers a range of flexible options such as changes to the amount of premium, insurance coverage, etc, subject to the policy terms and conditions.
Maturity Benefits: On maturity, the policy owner can either withdraw the account (IPA) value; or convert it into a life time pension.

Non-Cancelable Feature

MetLife Alico PPO Network
The basic provision of a Medical Insurance Contract from MetLife Alico is to have eligible medical expenses of insured members (Employees and/or their Dependents) reimbursed within
the applicable hospitalization plan limits / sub-limits. The understanding is that most insureds will first settle the hospital bill/s from their own means and then submit these to MetLife Alico for reimbursement along with
(1) Duly Completed Group Medical Claim Form; (2) Photocopy of Hospital discharge Certificate; (3) Itemized Hospital Bill (Original); and (4) Original Bill/s for any other Hospital Services provided outside the hospital (e.g., Medicines, Investigations) along with supporting papers (i.e. Doctor’s advice).
This system of availing the medical insurance benefit is known as Cash medical claims on Reimbursement basis.
But, considering the facts that most people would not have ready cash available at the time of hospitalization, MetLife Alico has entered into agreements with most of the well known hospitals in the country for extending “Credit Facility” to its insured members. These hospitals constitute MetLife Alico’s Preferred Provider Organization or PPO Network of Hospitals.
Through this network, we execute our Managed Care Program for the total benefits of our Group Medical insureds. Before extending the credit treatment services, the PPOs would either ask for a copy of MetLife Alico Pre-approval or arrange for it on a prescribed Pre-approval Form.
PPO & Managed Care Facilities
As the PPO scheme has been designed keeping emergencies in mind, our Managed Care Program or No Cash Scheme works on the basis of –
Pre-Approval for Non-emergency elective hospitalization; or Approval as soon as possible after Emergency non-elective hospitalization.
As part of the scheme, hospitalization insurance cards are provided by MetLife Alico to each insured including dependents. These are only valid for use at MetLife Alico PPO Hospitals and are to be produced at the MetLife Alico PPO Hospitals for Emergency Hospitalizations only!
Whatever, the case – Non-emergency admission through Pre -approval or Emergency admission using the card, the PPO member hospital will bill MetLife Alico directly and therefore, the insureds will not need to pay anything to the hospital if the expenses are eligible and within the applicable hospitalization plan limits / sub-limits.

For the SME Package
Group SizeFor Death & Disability benefits under the Packaged Plan, a group needs to be of a minimum of 5 (five) employees while for availing Group IP-Gen Benefits, the group size must be minimum 8 employees. Groups having a minimum of at least 10 married females can have IP-Mat coverages.
ApplicationWhile the employer must fill out a special Packaged Plan Application Form to avail this package, each employee and dependent (for Medical coverage only), must also fill out the Group Health Statement or G-42 Form.
Although it is a Pre-underwritten product package, MetLife Alico underwriters hold the right to decline providing coverage to any employee or dependent who does not appear to represent acceptable risk or health condition either from initial screening of the G-42 Form or from further medical tests conducted by MetLife Alico on the applicant at the former’s own cost.
Exclusions & Limitations:In addition to MetLife Alico’s standard Group Insurance exclusions like pre-existing health or physical condition, AIDS, and War, this Packaged Plan has some other restrictions like deductible on non-emergency elective hospitalization outside Bangladesh, No pre-approvals for MetLife Alico Top PPO Hospitals etc.
There are certain industries members of which are in the restricted category and cannot be guaranteed that their application for this pre-packaged, pre-priced, pre-underwritten Group insurance plans will be accepted by MetLife Alico automatically.
