Rising Third Grade Summer Reading Homework This summer homework is required and worth 100 points for Reading class. Included as part of this Summer Reading Journal you will find: *1 Summer Reading Journal cover page *10 reading log pages, 1 for each week of summer break *8 Reflection pages (“Today’s Reflection”) *1 book report page including title, author, genre, setting, main character, problem, and solution *1 beginning, middle, and end page (events page) *1 draw your favorite character page and write descriptive adjectives *1 book awards page Directions 1. You must read 1,000 minutes this summer—that’s 100 minutes a week for the 10 weeks of summer (or just 20 minutes a day, fives days a week). Additionally, at least 200 of those minutes should be read aloud by you, the student. You are welcome to read more, but not less, so be sure to spread out your reading throughout the summer. Complete your reading logs—one log per week—to show when you did your reading and be sure to have your parents sign each log. You can make additional copies of logs or use additional paper if you need more space. We want to encourage reading quality literature and have included a suggested reading list that includes quality literature at various levels to challenge you. (50 points) 2. One of the books you must read is Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White. You should choose what books you want to read for the rest of your minutes from the suggested list included after the directions. 3. After reading Charlotte’s Web, complete book report page, events page, and favorite character page. Complete sentences should be used on the book report page and events page to answer the “Problem,” “Solution,” “Beginning,” “Middle,” and “End” questions. You should list at least 10 different adjectives to describe your favorite character on the favorite character page. Adjectives are words used to describe and answer the questions a) how many? and b) what kind? (24 points) 4. Please complete one reflection page a week for 8 of the 10 weeks of summer. Reflection pages should look at something you read from that week and give your thoughts. You may use the following prompts to help you focus your reflections. Be sure to include an illustration. (16 points) * Did you or did you not like the book(s) you read that week? Give specific answers to why/why not. * Who was your favorite character from the book? Give specific examples from the book to show why. * How does this book compare to another book you read? Give specific details and compare the stories. * How did you relate to the character(s)? Give specific examples and tie them to your life/summer. * Would you recommend this book to a friend? Give specific reasons why or why not. * Is there something you would change about the book? Give specific details and explain why and how you would change those things. 5. Give out awards on your awards page. You will be presenting your awards to the class, so be sure to give them careful consideration. (6 points)
