The connecting thread in the success of the Competition Automotive Group has been family, along with a team who are committed to personal connections with clients and above all else, love a challenge.

Joseph C. Buzzetta led by example. Not everyone can be a leader all the time, but everyone can be a leading force when they believe in the mission. It took courage and know-how for Mr. Buzzetta to hang a sign in a Smithtown storefront and invite the public inside to judge his service.

Traditionally, leadership belongs to the extroverts, the loudest in the group. Mr. Buzzetta was not loud, his strength was a strong business acumen and a competitive spirit.

He loved cars, so he brought his family and followers along for the ride of a lifetime.

I still arrive for work everyday and say thanks to Mr. Buzzetta for including me in his dream of owning one of the most successful auto groups on Long Island and the tri-state area.

We are proud to bring you the third issue of Competition Magazine. This publication includes a historical timeline about the Competition Auto Group, and highlights our best and brightest vehicle “stars.” On page __ read about our IIHS award-winning cars and on page __ is a special story on Edition 30, INFINITI’s awesome new lineup for 2020.

We like to feature the stories of our successful and loyal clients in the magazine as well. In this issue we are proud to tell the story of Island Pump, who own a fleet of __ Mercedes-Benz Sprinters. Turn to page __ to find out why these vehicles are such an integral part of Island Pump’s success.

1962 Competition Auto Group is launched by Smithtown-native and championship racecar driver, Joe Buzzetta Sr.

1960SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) names Buzzetta Regional Champion.

1962Joe Buzzetta and racing mechanic Oscar Rubio begin selling and repairing cars at Competition Engineering in Smithtown.

1964Buzzetta becomes a member of the Porsche factory racing team.

1967Joe Buzzetta (top right) comes in first place at Nürburgring, Germany, Europe's most prestigious car race.

1969Buzzetta and Rubio acquire a Mercedes-Benz franchise in Smithtown.

Buzzetta completes his last professional race with Porsche at Watkins Glen, NY.

The W113 Pagoda Mercedes-Benz with an automatic transmission was introduced.

Mercedes-AMG is founded as a high-performance tuning company.


The 1960s

Mercedes-Benz USA was founded in 1965, but vehicles were being imported into the US by well-known luxury import dealer, Max Hoffman, who helped cement the identity of Mercedes-Benz USA. Buzzetta had a connection with Hoffman, who offered him an opportunity to open a Porche/BMW dealership in Smithtown. They also struck a deal to open a Datsun franchise.

1970In 1970 Mercedes-Benz USA approached Buzzetta about opening a dealership in Smithtown, with the caveat that a new 8,000 sf building be constructed on Middle Country Rd. where BMW and Datsun also resided.

1970Buzzetta and Rubio opted to open a more profitable Mercedes-Benz franchise, but had to give up the Porsche dealership in the deal.
