THE torture test of next month’s UltramanAustralia at Noosa is incomprehensible to most. It’s a 10km swim, 420km ride and then a doublemarathon across three days.

Now imagine the challenge without legs.Double amputee Andre Kajlich aims to

complete his third Ultraman when the gun goesoff on May 14 at Noosa Main Beach.

The Washington-based researcher is nostranger to endurance events. Over more than adecade he has become one of the world’sleading paratriathletes, conquering some of theglobe’s toughest events.

But Ultraman has quickly found a way into hisheart.

“I like doing really long, gruelling races thattake me to places not reached by long-coursetriathlon, training, or any event under 24 hours,”he said.

Ultraman is really a nice balance ofphysical test in the multi-day andultra-distances covered andcommunity, due to the stage racesetup and camaraderie that itdevelops.”

Having finished Canada andHawaii events, Andre knowswhat’s ahead.

He doesn’t see it has a race orcompetition, but rather “as acommon ground to show eachother what we can do”.

“I’ve really been motivated bythe reactions from other crewsand racers in the past andhopefully I can put another goodperformance together,” Andresaid.

“Probably the biggest difficultyfor me is the first transition. I’mabout 3.5 hours for a 10k and it’shard to sit upright on a bike andget to work after that. My arms aredead and they have to go rightback to work. In the past twoUltramans I’ve done it took a longtime (really until day two) to feelgood on the bike.

“Other than that, Ultraman ispretty straightforward. Show up ingood shape with an awesomecrew, and then just get to workand try to savour the fun momentsout there.”

His preparation for the eventwas interrupted after he got aninfection in his residual limb twomonths ago after anultramarathon in Brazil, butexpects to make hefty formprogress this month.

Commuting about 30-odd hillykilometres each day, the universitywhere he works has a pool whichis perfect for regular swimsessions.

Long rides are staged eachweekend, and he also throws in

some wheelchair workouts whenpossible.

“The biggest issue for me isreally the ocean swim. I’m a lakeswimmer and the ocean is just abit big for my nerves,” he said.

“At the Ultraman worlds westart the swim on the Ironmancourse which I’d done three timeswithout any issues.

“However, in Ultraman thereisn’t 2000 other peoplesurrounding you and at the1.2-mile turnaround we justcontinue out towards open ocean. It’s kind of wonderful to just let goand focus on your stroke but itreally is outside of my comfortzone.”

Leaving that zone is what hasinspired Andre to new heights. After the accident, there was apessimistic outlook, but it hasshaped his mental toughness.

Andre has developedproductive ways of seeingeverything.

“I’ve got some natural traitsthat both aided me through thisand have been sources offrustration to me through myaccident, recovery and intraining and racing,” he said.

“For me it’s always a processand one I’ll never complete. That doesn’t mean I shouldn’ttry – it also doesn’t mean I needto be too serious about it all.”

Like most non-professionalathletes, Andre wishes he hadmore time to train.

But one way of stayingfocussed is not watchingtelevision.

“I don’t know when I last hada TV but it’s been at least 10years. I don’t even like anythingon TV and yet it’s so good atwhat it does – get you to watchcommercials and of course thenext episode. I don’t need anyof that,” Andre said.

“These days you don’t needa TV to be endlessly distracted,

and I’m not claiming to beimmune. My one vice is procycling. Luckily it is very nicelyenjoyed from a trainer!”

KNOWLEDGEABLE across stylesand brands, the Sunshine Coast’sleading cycling shops offer someimpressive rides.

But what about their likes anddreams? We caught up with theexperts to get their opinions onroadies and time trial bikes, covering dream bikes and thoseoffering best bang for buck.

Jez Peterson is the owner ofVenture Cycles at Noosaville, andhe’s enamoured with the Trekrange.

If money was no object, he’d begetting a Madone 9.9 for hisroadie rolling on “goodall-rounders” via the 50mmBontrager carbon wheelset shodwith Bontrager tubeless tyres. Heloves this derivative of the Madonefor its H1 fit technology, the 700Series OCLV carbon frame andthe fact its hand made in the USA.

When it comes to the drivetrain, there are no doubts: wirelessSRAM Red eTap. “We’re not bigon cables anymore,” he said.

Jez actually has a frame onorder, and will have a custompaint job which also has the artistsign one of the rear stays, whilethere will also be an inscription onthe top tube.

Collectively, this bike wouldretail for about $14,000.

When it comes for best value formoney, Jez said it would be hardto go past the Madone 9.2running an Ultegra drivetrain withan alloy wheelset.

“You get the same whiz-bangframe, same integrated

handlebars, and IsoSpeedoffers the bestverticalcomplianceandaerodynamics,” he said. All that atabout half the price of the 9.9.

The Trek Speed Concept 9.9(below) would be Jez’s choice ifmoney were no object in the timetrial realm.

“We have done a few of thosewith big custom flame paint jobs. Iwould run SRAM Red eTap onthat one too…the absolute easeof not having to run cablesthrough a frameis amazing. They areprimarilybought bytriathletes, and they are mad fortravelling around. It makespacking them up nice and easy,”he said.

To complete the package he

would run Bontrager Aeolus 5 D3TLR carbon wheels, which wouldthen roll out of the shop for about$15k.

Jez said the best value comesvia the 7 Series Speed Concept,

in what he rates as one of themost underrated bikes in thisgenre.

“It’s essentially a very similarframe in design to the 9.9 with afew detuned parts. Thehandlebars are still integrated, they are alloy and not carbon, butwith Shimano Ultrega they roll outthe door at $3900,” he said.“Throw a set of deep wheels on itfor less than $6000. They reallyare anoverlooked bike. The aerodynamicposition is 90%of the battle with time trial bikesand it gets you down there andgets you going fast.”

The Bianchi Specialissimawould be hard to resist for Le

CycloSportif’s Greg Ball. The newlightweight frame featuresBianchi’s Countervail vibration

absorption material.“By all reports it’sextremely smoothas well as light andstrong,” he said.

“And I could put theCampagnolo Super Record EPSErgopower on it…I think it is thenicest groupset out there. It looksthe best and the electronicperformance is amazing.

“You can program it from yourmobile phone, for example youcan program it to simultaneouslydrop gears at the back when youswap to the small chainring. It’sreally clever. They have taken aleap ahead of everyone else interms of customising the set-up. Ijust love the ergonomics of thelevers and I think it makes a bettershifting sound than any other.”

for the 50mm Campagnolo BulletUltra. Collectively, that bike wouldcost about $18,000.

When it comes to getting bangfor buck, Greg said the FocusCayo is difficult to beat at $3200with an Ultegra drivetrain.

“The frameweighs about850 grams, andwe all knowUltegra movesbeautifully. It comes with Fulcrumalloy wheels, but it if you put on a$1000 set of race wheels it wouldbe a top-notch race bike,” he said.

When it comes to time trialbikes, Greg would opt for aCervelo P5, armed with ShimanoDura Ace Di2 or SRAM eTap.

For wheels, he would select the90mm Reynolds Aero on theback, perhaps a disc dependingon the conditions, and a 72mm onthe front. That package wouldcome in at about $14K.

When it comes to the valuerealm, Greg said he would staywith the Cervelo brand but opt forthe less expensive P3 with anelectronic Shimano Ultegraelectronic groupset with Mavicwheels.

“You get P5stiffness andclose to thesameaerodynamics, but a cheapergroupset that will work virtually aswell. It’s also an easier bike to ownand not as fussy on themechanical set-up and it’s a lotmore adjustable,” Greg said.

If money was no concern, CycleZone owner John Carey wouldhave the Specialized S-WorksTarmac in his garage running thenew SRAM Red eTap wirelesselectronic shifting drivetrain, and40mm Roval 40mm CLX wheelswith sealed ceramic hubs.Altogether that would come toabout $12,000.

“It's the bike of choice for riderslike Vincenzo Nibali and AlbertoContador and really is the ultimatein complete road bikeperformance,” John said

As for best value, he said theSpecialized Tarmac Pro is toughto beat starting from about $6000.Running Shimano Dura-Ace alongwith 40m RovalCL carbonwheels, it’s animpressivepackage for the

price. When it comes to time trial

bikes, John said thedemonstrated ability of theCervelo P5 was hard to look past.

He would equip it with the11-speed SRAM Red eTapdrivetrain, along with a ZippSuper-9 carbon disc at the backand a Vision Metron 3-Spoke atthe front.

Although for the budgetconscious, John said it is difficultto look past the Specialized Shiv. The mid-spec Expert comes with

an 11-speedShimanoUltegradrivetrain forabout $4000,but there is

currently a great deal on the ShivPro which comes with Roval CL60mm carbon wheels for around$6000.

Over at Noosa’s Trilogy Cycles,Keith Maricich would take thelightest bike in the Scott range, anAddict SL. He’d equip it with thenew SRAM RedeTap, Pioneer’spower meters andEnve carbonwheelset, which

collectively wouldbe worth about$18,000.

But for thosewatching the pennies, he can’t gopast the Scott Addict 30. It’sShimano 105 equipped, is veryflexible and light with thecompleted bike weighing less than8kg. That retails for about $2900.

For the time trial genre, Keithdidn’t flinch when asked about adream ride: the Scott PlasmaPremium (above). He’d even takeit in stock format, with ShimanoDura-Ace Di2, riding on Zipp 404on the front and 808 on the back. All that for $14,500.

Keith said for value, the FeltIA16 was a winner. For less than$4000 you get afull carbon frame,Shimano 105drivetrain, Bayonetfront end and FeltTTR4 wheels.

Both John Careyand Greg Ballwould opt for aCervelo P5.

DAVID Halliwell is covering1540km on a bike in 10 days, buthe considers it a small battlecompared with those facing acancer diagnosis.

The Sippy Downs man is ridingfrom Brisbane to Sydney on April29 for the cycle fundraiser Tour deCure to raise valuable funds forcancer research, support andprevention.

He is the only Sunshine Coastcompetitor among the 140 riderstaking part in the 10th anniversaryevent. David had two malignantmelanomas 10 years ago, andthen in 2013 he had one of hiskidneys removed after doctorsfound a tumour during a regularcheck-up.

“I didn’t have any symptoms ofkidney cancer so I’m really, reallylucky it was picked up,” he said.

“It’s part of the reason I ride.

“We’ve also lost friends andfamily through cancer.

“There’s not too many peopleyou meet who’ve really not hadany connection to cancer, whether

it’s a friend, a family member oreven themselves.”

David first took part in the Tourde Cure in 2014, riding fromSydney to Hobart and personallyraising $20,000.

RUNNING one marathon is a hugefeat but running seven marathonsin seven different states in sevendays is just downright crazy.

Eumundi resident Mel Blanco ismaking her second attempt at theseries of marathons as part of theBraveheart 777 to raise money toprotect Aussie kids.

The 22-year-old hopes to makeit through the 295 kilometres andwill spend the next three monthstraining hard to prepare her body.

“I attempted it in 2013 and did200km in the week but couldn’tfinish all seven marathons,” shesaid. “I’m running three or fourdays a week at the moment anddoing some strength trainingagain, trying to build up so I don’tinjure myself.”

Mel said she would completethe seven marathons in Perth,Adelaide, Melbourne Hobart,Canberra, Kingscliff and the GoldCoast with a team of 25 otherrunners. She said they had ahectic schedule to adhere to anda time limit to finish the runs sothey could make it to the nextevent in time.

“We have a six-hour time limitfor each one,” she said.

“We start at 6am, finish atmidday, go and shower, and theneat and fly to the next state, stayovernight and get up do it again.”

Mel said the flights and travelwas what took a toll on her lasttime. “It made my feet swell up alot and was really exhaustingdealing with delays and waitingand travel. It made us all prettytired.”

Mel said the thought of helpingkids in need helped push herthrough the exhaustion and pain.“Thinking about the kids and thereason that we’re doing itmotivates me,” she said.

Mel needs to raise $10,000 toparticipate in the event with fundsraised going towards Bravehearts’personal safety educationprogram Ditto’s Keep SafeAdventure and the delivery ofspecialist support services tochildren and families affected by

A UNIVERSITY of the SunshineCoast researcher is investigatingwhether recent converts tophysical activity can hold theirown against veteran exercisers.

PhD candidate Gavin Buzzatested the fitness levels of 120volunteers as part of his three-yearproject examining how the body, muscles and brain tissue utiliseoxygen during exercise and howthis could change with aging.

The project is comparing theexercise capacity of those whohave trained for less than twoyears with long-term exercisers ofmore than five years, as well aslooking at how gender and agecan affect oxygen levels.

Gavin said most publishedresearch in this area focussed onthe differences between sedentarypeople and experienced athletes.

“I wanted to find out if someonewho started exercising fairlyregularly and intensely could getup to a comparable level tosomeone who had trained overthe long term,” he said.

“We would expect the personwho had trained for 5-10 years tobe fitter, but I want to find out byhow much and if that relates tomore efficient oxygen use by theirmuscle tissue.”

Full name: Lisa Thompson.Birthplace: Brisbane.Occupation: Emergency nurse atNambour Hospital.Age and marital status: 30,married with a two-year-old.Club: T:Zero Multisport.Sport: Trail running.Favourite food: It’s a bit of acliché but I really love chocolate.Favourite drink: Pimms andlemonade and coffee.Favourite run location and why:We’re so lucky up here – there isheaps of beautiful running on thetrails of the Great Walk. I also get abit of a kick out of doing MtCoolum repeats, the view at thetop is really something if you cantolerate the bunches of peoplealso hiking up.Bucket-list event: Ultra Trail MontBlanc. It’s a fairly crazy sounding166km in the alps through France,Italy and Switzerland with somemassive elevation gain. ThoughtI’d shoot high! How did you get into running: Idid a little bit of running andtriathlon before having a baby buthad retired from any version ofexercise until about August lastyear.

My friend reminded me that Ihad wanted to do a marathonbetween babies and I went andsigned up for the Sunshine CoastMarathon.

I ended up with a virus twoweeks out from the race and hadto downgrade to the half distance.

Not wanting to waste the fitnessI gained I went looking for anotherlonger race and found the Blackall50km trail run. I had a really funtime up on the range and decidedthe trails trumped running on theroad.

I’m only new to all this trailrunning business but the past

seven months has been anawesome learning curve. What are you favourite shoes: Ihave been wearing Mizunos forseven years without injury so I’llstick with them.Best race results: Well, I’ve onlydone around three or four races inrecent times.

The results were nothing toboast about but I genuinely do itfor enjoyment – I’m mostly stokedto just reach the finish line. What’s your favourite part ofracing: I’m pretty low key aroundraces. It’s quite fun skippingaround the bush on trails I haven’t

hit before with people handing youfood at the aid stations. It’s alsocool pushing yourself a little bitharder than you ordinarily would intraining. What does a training week looklike for you in terms of volumesand sessions: The perfect weekhas a bunch of different thingsgoing on. I do four run sessions –one very long on the trails, onerecovery and the other two arehills, hills, hills at Mt Coolum orGheerulla bluff.

It also became obvious early onthat you need to incorporate coreand hip strength and stability to

make it through the ultra races.I get this through one or two

yoga classes, a session at OceanPerformance Centre and anotherround at Sports and Spinal Physioat Sippy Downs which isorganised through T:ZeroMultisport. Just reiterating that thisis the ideal week and I wouldn’talways pull it off around shift work,a toddler and a husband who alsotrains for endurance events. If you could have a celebrity livewith you, who would it be andwhy: I don’t like cooking, so I’dpick a chef. Someone homely likeNigella Lawson.

THERE is no denying the fact thatsuccess in endurance sportrequires hours of training thehouse down and loads ofconsistency over a long period oftime.

How you pound that pavement, climb those mountains and stareat the black line, can make orbreak your race day. Especiallywhen working full time andjuggling everything else life throwsat you. You want to make everysecond of your training count.

Before science and years ofrecorded trial and error werelogged, common methods oftraining were to get out there andjust go ‘hard’… all the time! Wellmoderately hard anyway as notmany can sustain going hard allthe time.

One would think that after allthose years we would see a morerefined approach to training, however there still seems to be aplethora of people spending waytoo much time in the middlezones. This going at amoderate-hard pace all the time iswhat we call the ‘grey zone’.Although you will generally getfaster and stronger the more youtrain, method irrelevant, there arefar better ways to train and formore physiological benefit for yourvaluable hours.

A more modern, researchbased approach is called the

Polarised Training method. Simplyput, we train really easy or we trainhard. We spend less time in themiddle ground and more time ateither end of the scale. Thisdoesn’t mean avoiding the greyzone at all costs, it just means wespend more time ~80% in theouter zones Z1 or Z5 and less,~20% in the middles zones.

Recent research performed with48 highly trained athletes over anine-week period (a high qualitystudy) shows that a polarisedtraining method yields greaterresults and hence, betterperformance in races. This is acommon occurrence amongexisting studies on the polarisedmethod of training.

The theory is if you spend toomuch time in the middle zones, you build up more fatigue thanneccessary and become a‘one-speed wonder’ who whenrequired to train at the top of theirtraining zones, can’t really maxthings out. The built up fatiguedoesn’t allow the individual toreach the high heart rates and orthe speed they could get too witha more polarised approach.

Whereas the polarised methodof training, lots of time in the Z1-2HR zone allows the athlete to buildstrength and when asked to find

their ‘ceiling’ in training, canreally hit those higher zonesand build their top endendurance.

However as with anythingtriathlon related, we need toremember that everyone is anindividual and are at varyinglevels of experience.

A beginner to the sport ispossibly going to benefit morefrom spending more time ridingat lower intensities for longerperiods of time than aseasoned professional.

It is important for noviceathletes without the years ofbase strength in their bodies tofocus on building that strengththrough carefully structuredtraining spent mostly in thelower zones.

Too much time spent trainingat high intensities for a beginnercan lead to a higher risk of

injuries occurring. This is notsomething any coach wants tosee happen to their athletes earlyon.

Determining what method oftraining you should be using is onethat needs to take a range offactors into consideration. Work, family, lifestyle, experience, goalsand phase of training (how far outfrom the event you are) all need tobe considered when decidingexactly what style of training mightbe good for you.

As always, from one person tothe next, a training programshould be customised so that theindividual is catered for.

Like most things in life, no twopeople are the same and yourtraining plan and method oftraining should reflect this. Whichis why we always recommendworking with a coach who willprovide a customised approach.

SMALL but slick offerings arespearheading the Honda revival inAustralia.

The brand, built on thefoundation of sporting prowess, claims to have its mojo back. Andif the upcoming Civic is anyindication, it’s more than just talk.

Tenth-generation Civic sedanswill storm into dealerships fromJune as the marque aims to clawits way back into Australianautomotive hearts.

Looking Audi-esque withsportback styling which offersimpressive loading room for bikes, the sedan is set to shake up thecompact segment.

Equipped with the likes of AppleCarPlay and Android Auto asstandard the new Civic lookscloser to a mid-size offering.

Honda Australia directorStephen Collins said mistakes ofthe past whereby the marque wascharging premium prices for amainstream product would not berepeated.

Pricing is yet to be released, butearly indications are that it will startaround the benchmark sweet spotset by the Mazda3 ($20,490),Toyota Corolla ($20,740) andHyundai Elantra ($21,490).

Wearing a more cohesive yetpremium look, the new sedan hasa striking presence.

Displayed in pre-production RSguise in Sydney and Melbournelast month, the RS is one of fivemodel grades set to be available.

The compact Civic is set tobroaden its appeal across theentire range thanks to edgy stylingand that sportback rear end.

Most buyers will be drawn tothe advanced infotainment AppleCarPlay and Android Auto as

standard, while the RS on showalso had 17-inch alloys, leathertrim, blind spot monitor systemwith camera for lane changes tothe left, colour touch-screen,digital driver display, dual exhaustpipes and rear spoiler, all whilelooking closer to a mid-sizeoffering courtesy of a body whichis wider and longer yet lower thanits predecessor.

There will be two four-cylinderengine variants on offer infront-wheel drive: a turbo1.5-litrepartnered to a continuouslyvariable automatic alongside anaturally aspirated 1.8-litre in autoand manual.

Hatch models will arrive nextyear, along with the Type R in thesecond half of 2017. The latter willhave Honda purists and

enthusiasts salivating, as it’stargeting hot hatches such as theFord Focus RS and VW Golf GTI.

The three variants – sedan, hatch and Type R – had separatedevelopment teams, hence thestaged introduction.

But there will be consistenciesacross five grades, mirrored inhatch and sedan, with all comingfrom the same Thailand factory.

TODAY’S review is coming to youfrom a standing position. That’sright, this eight-hour-a-dayhunchback has invested in astand-up desk.

Apparently sitting is the newsmoking.

Research by the AmericanCancer Society has found thatwomen who sit down for six hoursor more a day have a 10% greaterchance of getting cancer thanwomen who sit for less than threehours.

But to be brutally honest, it wasnot the threat of cancer that wasgiving me the heebie-jeebies.While I’m an avid cyclist, I havebecome paranoid that I amdeveloping a square-shapedtwo-dimensional bum.

When I lie in bed at night, it’s asthough I can feel the parts of myderriere that are slowly turning tolifeless half-empty goon sacks.

I work in the epitome of anormal newsroom. Dozens ofopen-plan desks packed one ontop of the other, a healthy dose of“good chair” stealing and mostpeople too busy to get out forlunch but not too busy for catmemes.

We keep our bodies still most ofthe time, except for our hands. Itcertainly isn’t the hipster techstart-up company orGoogle-esque scene in which youmight imagine a standing desk.

The first day with my new deskwas very social. People wouldstop at my desk as though it was

a bar and talk to me about what Iwas doing (serving drinksobviously), did the company payfor it (no) and was it tiring?

At the last question I wouldshow them the quick releasefunction that enables me to dropthe desk back to a seated height. That’s when people got reallyexcited about it. Choice, peoplelove choice.

But you know what peopledon’t love? Being different.

In an office full of sitting robotswith twitching hands I stood outlike a hipster at a barber shop (andnot a cool new one where you getbeers while you wait).

But wait and see… there is awhole world of people out there

with sore backs and flat bumslooking for ways to make the 21stcentury work week more

sustainable.I might not be standing alone for

very long.

Reviews

THEY’RE preaching to theconverted. I’m already a fan of theClif Bar range but it got better thisyear with the introduction of a newflavour.

Coconut chocolate chip hasbeen added to the line-up and it’sanother tasty offering from thenutrition company, which has alocal edge – it’s exclusivelydistributed from the Sunshine

Coast to specialty health foodand grocery chain retail

stores nationwide.The new offering is

easy on the palette butwith that chocolate hit

and joins blueberry crisp, chocolate almond fudge,

chocolate chip, crunchy peanut

butter, oatmeal raisin walnut, along with my favourite whitechocolate macadamia nut.

They are all pretty tasty, andthey have a strong following onthe Sunny Coast.

Among the key benefits of Clifwhich captured my attentioninitially was the absence ofgenetically modified organisms,no high fructose corn syrup andno artificial sweeteners, flavours orpreservatives. For those who wantthe figures, each bar is made with70% organic ingredients, with 40gof carbohydrates for energy, up to11g of protein and 11 vitaminsand minerals.

These bars are to be eatenone-three hours before exercise, which makes them a fast optionwhen getting up early and

travelling to a session, while theyare also a handy snack betweenmeals during the day.

Clif Bar was born in 1990 whenfounder, Gary Erickson, began a281km bike ride in California.

Exhausted with kilometres to goand struggling to consumeanother sticky energy bar, theinspiration for the Clif Bar wasborn.

A baker by trade, competitiveathlete and a foodie, Gary spentmonths in his mother’s kitchenperfecting a recipe for a nutritious, great tasting energy bar.

The name comes from Gary’sfather Clifford, who inspired hislove of the outdoors.

I’m also a fan of their gel range, which has 85-90% organicingredients.
