I am confident that we will be asked to do new things, that God will surprise us, that our faith will be challenged and deepened. Pastor Sue’s Message

SPECIAL EVENTS

June 14th Flag Day

June 19th Father’s Day

I gave the children sidewalk chalk on Sunday, and told them to write church messages outside. They filled the steps, sidewalk and parking lot with messages of LOVE! JOY! HOLLY SPIRIT! A Luther Rose, a credo of ‘on the third day he rose again,’ and an invitation: ‘come to church! you are welcome!’ Of all the delightful and faith-filled messages they shared, I was most struck by one: ‘ Growth’ We are entering the season of Pentecost, those green days of our long journey, a time for us to grow in the life and mission that has been prepared for us in the resurrection of Christ and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. For as much as I talk about this, for as much as we proclaim together that our mission

includes Spiritual growth in Christ, it’s really the kind of thing I’d expect a kid to filter out. But there it is. I am glad that ‘Growth’ is part of our church vocabulary. And that it doesn’t have anything to do with member count or offering totals. That growth is something we continue to do through gathering, listening, learning…and living. In seeing and responding. In being hearts and hands in our families, in our workplaces, in our community. In giving,

in praying, in singing, in caring. In welcoming, in sending. How will we grow in these Pentecost days? What kind of growth will be a part of our journey? I am confident that we will be asked to do new things, that God will surprise us, that our faith will be challenged and deepened.

We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing. --2 Thessalonians 1.3:

Collaborating with the Resistance, sheltering Jewish orphans, defying the rulings of Vichy France: these are dangerous activities in dangerous times." The book selected for Thursday, July 21st is The Elephant Whisperer: My Life with the Herd in the African Wild by Lawrence Anthony and Graham Spence. HELP WANTED TREASURER

Are you a member who is comfortable working with numbers? Do you have experience in using software for your personal or business needs?

Are you willing to learn new software, specifically Shepherd’s Staff, Payroll Mate, and Excel? Are you interested in joining RLC’s management circle and providing the behind-the-scenes financial work that

enables the missions of RLC to be carried out? Are you willing to contribute time for the good of the congregation?

In short, are you interested in the office of Treasurer of Resurrection Lutheran Church? The RLC treasurer is required to be an adult (confirmed) member of the congregation, but need not be on the Congregation Council. The newly elected and carry-over members of the Council have found that none of them is interested in taking on the office of treasurer. The current treasurer, Mike McMullen, announced over a year ago his intention to not serve a term beyond this year. Therefore, the Congregation Council, as it will be constituted as of July 1, is looking for a congregation member outside the Council to be our treasurer. The responsibilities of the treasurer are contained in the congregation’s by-laws: “The treasurer shall keep the books of account of this congregation. This person shall receive all funds and disburse them properly, making monthly remittance of benevolence and partnership receipts.” Procedures and processes are in place for carrying out the treasurer’s responsibilities. A new treasurer will not have to reinvent them. Several people perform specific functions which makes the treasurer’s own required activity easier. Receipt of all funds is recorded by the counters. Deposits are made by the office manager. The contribution recorder enters the information required to provide the quarterly and annual reports for income tax purposes. The office manager also mails signed checks. A Treasurer’s Manual will be completed by the time a new treasurer is selected. The treasurer estimates the following time requirements: Processing bills once per week 1 -1.5 hours Preparing payroll on last day of the month .5 hours Preparing partnership checks when

month-end information is available .5 hours Monthly reconciling of bank accounts and preparing of reports 2 hours Attend monthly council meeting 1–1.5 hours

Are you interested? Do you have questions? Please contact President Adam Garner (321-1459), Treasurer Mike McMullen (209-6612) or Pastor Sue (586-2380).

UPDATE FROM DANIEL

Greetings from this side of the world. We are fine and getting on well. My family is doing well and all of us are busy in our respective stations of work. Our country is peaceful this far by God's grace which sustains us all. You might have seen on the News of last weekend that we burned about 100 tons of ivory as a way of fighting poaching and ivory trade. I wish we were doing it to preserve God's creation. However, it does not matter as

long as we save the Elephant. Tourism is a major source of our revenue. Concerning the water project we did the survey for the pipe but when we were just about to begin clearing the bushes so that we could have proper coordinates taken for trenching, our Hydro-geologist suggested a change of the pipeline for technical reasons and also because some community members requested for the same. He has been engaged in another project and this has caused some delay. In fact the director of the organization that drilled the borehole is also waiting for some computation on the submersible pump to see whether he can purchase one for us. I can imagine the desire you people have to hear of the progress if not completion of the project. I request for your patience and understanding. I believe the Lord will bring this to completion soon. The funds are safely kept. I will come back to you soon for an update. Regards to your church.

OUT AND ABOUT IN GOD’S WORLD

RLC regrets to lose (Rear Admiral) Dan Abel and his wife Courtney. Dan and Courtney came to us after he commanded the 1st CG District comprising the New England states, eastern NY, northeast NJ, and all those off-shore waters. He has commanded the 17th District here in Alaska the past two years. On 17 June, Dan will be relieved of his command here, and he and Courtney will travel to Miami FL where Dan will assume the duties of Director of Operations, U.S Southern Command. SOUTHCOM is the joint command system based in Doral, FL (about ten miles south of Miami), which is responsible for all US military activities in the countries of Central and South America. Dan has had an illustrious career since graduating with a BS in Civil Engineering with High Honors from the Coast Guard Academy in 1983. He also served as valedictorian of the College of William and Mary’s Master of Business Administration class of 1994. In 2005, he was a distinguished graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF) earning a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy. Beginning as a deck officer on the Cutter Dauntless, he went on to flight school and is qualified in Coast Guard helicopters and jets. He later commanded the Air Stations in San Francisco and on Cape Cod. This will necessarily be Courtney’s last input directly helping get the Risen Sun laid out and put together. We wish them safe travels, and will miss them. School is ending and our RLC youth are ready for a summer of fun.

At the “TAFY” Spring dance recital (mid-May) they provide about 4 or 5 awards among the participating 60

or so participants. The top award this year (Star Student) went to (drum roll please!) our very own Sophia!

This award is a combination of 100% effort, and willingness to try many new things and by hard work setting an

example for others. Well done, an congratulations Sophia

Religious Tidbits By Jack Cadigan There are few fundamental matters of Faith for Christians, perhaps one of the foremost is the Trinity. We just passed Trinity Sunday, and no one has ever been able to explain the mystery of One God in Three Divine Persons. Legend has it that when St. Patrick (recognized as a saint in the Roman Catholic, Episcopalian, and Eastern Orthodox churches) converted Ireland he used a shamrock as a teaching tool (ca, 450 AD). St. Sergei, or Sergius (ca. 1350, recognized as a saint by Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox churches) similarly is reported to have used three stacking eggs (similar to stacking dolls) to teach the concept to children. Many customs and traditions developed over the past 2,000 years of Christianity. Crossing oneself, Christmas candlelight services, Palm Sunday processions, the Paschal candle, and on and on. It was not until 1517 that Luther posted his famed 95 theses that questioned certain church teachings and peripheral accompanying beliefs (specifically the purchase of indulgences). These peripheral areas, not central to the sacraments of Baptism and Communion nor necessary for Redemption. were later codified as “adiaphora.” Adiaphora (from the Greek ἀδιάφορα "indifferent things") is a concept of philosophy that indicates things outside of moral law, that is, actions that morality neither mandates nor forbids, (in Lutheranism are neither directed or prohibited in the New Testament), are a “middle ground” that have no direct result in Salvation and Redemption. Without getting into a lengthy historical discussion of the times after Luther’s death in 1546, Phillip Melanchthon was a co-founder of Lutheranism and a leading theologian of his day. The Holy Roman Emperor Charles V attempted to reunite Protestants and Catholicism within his realm. A compromise of sorts was reached with Melanchthon in December 1548 with what came to be called the Leipzig Interim. This meant that a such things as candles, private confessions, Confirmation, and many traditional practices not biblically founded, were irrelevant to one’s Faith and Salvation. The Leipzig Interim went nowhere as it was vehemently opposed by Matthias Flacius. Thus the Augsburg Confession also went nowhere. (The Lutheran Augsburg Confession of 1530 states that in the true unity of the Church it is enough to agree concerning the doctrine of the Gospel and the administration of the Sacraments. Nor is it necessary that human traditions, that is, rites or ceremonies, instituted by men, should be everywhere alike.)

CHURCH GNOMES FOR THE MONTH The Food Pantry Volunteers As you may or may not know, the Food Pantry has relocated downstairs and changed its hours. Our Food Pantry is now open Monday from 12-5 and Thursday from 8-1. With the larger space the Food Pantry now also has a place for people to have coffee and a treat, a clothing table, and a book lending shelf. In addition to adding practical value, these additions have helped people have a place to relax and socialize thereby forming relationships with each other and our church. The hours and space reconfigurations have changed the time and volunteer requirements for preparing the space and gathering the food. Volunteers go to the Southeast Food Band on Mondays, and Wednesdays if needed, at 9:30 a.m. to pick up food. If there is not enough at the Southeast Food Bank, they then go to the grocery stores to supplement. The amount of preparation time needed to be open for 10 hours a week is about 10 hours a week as well. Once all the food is stocked, the coffee is made and the doors open, the volunteers start by signing people in. People sign in either with a card that tracks the number on monthly visits or with a notebook that is open at the front of the main table. At this point, volunteers collect information regarding the number of people in the family After sign in, the volunteers start filling bags with food enough for two or three meals for the family. This is a one on one experience for the people who come to the Food Pantry. The volunteer asks them what type of proteins, grains, fruits, and vegetables they would like as they fill the bags. With the added space and the added need in our community, Resurrection has been feeding more people every month. This would not be possible without the Food Pantry Gnomes!! They give their time and vehicles to keep our shelves stocked, Food Pantry open and our community fed. If you are interested in volunteering with the Food Pantry in any way, please talk to Adam Garner, Bill Bahleda or Karen Lawfer.
