    Program

    Purpose

    Match first-year,

    underrepresented students with

    continuing students (sophomores

    seniors) in order to achieve the

    following:

    Provide a connection for first-year, underrepresented

    students in their transition to

    the UMW community.

    Provide support and

    resources to increase

    students success and

    engagement with the

    university.

    Provide support and

    resources to help students

    adjust academically,personally, and socially to the

    Workshops are offered

    throughout the fall and spring

    semesters. Topics include:

    time management, effective

    writing and study skills, class

    schedule building, and

    effective networking.

    Mentee Qualifications

    Incoming freshman andtransfer students fromunderrepresentedpopulationsUnderrepresented student populations atUMW include the following: first-generation students, students fromunderrepresented racial, ethnic, andreligious groups, students from genderand sexual minority groups, and studentswho identify as having learning, mental, orphysical disabilities.

    Mentee Requirements

    Be act ively engaged

    with the program.

    Communicate with mentor at

    least once a week.

    Meet with mentor at leasttwice a month.

    Attend all RISE workshops.

    Attend at least two RISE

    social activities per semester.

    Attend at least two campus-wide activities per semester.

    Complete assessments of the

    program at the end of each

    semester.

    Selection Process

    Mentee applications will be

    reviewed by the James

    Farmer Multicultural Center

    Staff in late July 2014.

    Applicants will be contacted(via email) in early August

    regarding the status of their

    application.

    If accepted, applicants will

    receive an acceptance letterfrom the James Farmer

    Multicultural Center staff and

    a letter from their mentor (via

    email) by mid August.
