information on hiring these

for your next event or

birthday party.

To all Members and Guests,

I would like to thank everyone for your support for those who took part in

the 90 minute super challenge on Saturday 16th May 2015. We had over 80

participants and raised over $750 for Cancer Council.

We are continuing to improve our services and programs on offer at our

Ripples sites. We have some exciting large water roller balls that will be

available for children’s birthday parties and our new kids holiday program in

the June school holidays. Check out or Facebook page or YouTube channel to

see what it’s all about.

We are also going to see some exciting changes to our health and fitness

customer loyalty program, with the card system being phased out and

members won’t need to worry about bringing their card along each time

they visit us, instead we will be able to generate visitation reports from our

membership system. This then provides you with an entry into the monthly

draw each time you visit any of our three sites. If you would like to find out

more information please speak to one of our friendly staff.

Coming into the winter period, it is the best time to get a head start on your

summer fitness goals. We are here to support your goals and have a range of

services to help you do this from fitness assessments and programs, small

group training through to nutrition services. Don’t wait until summer, get

started today!

Inspirational Story - Ripples Member Pat Ross Pat has been a member at Ripples for 13 years. She originally joined after being advised by her doctor in 2002 that she was pre-diabetic and that this could be controlled through diet and exercise. Pat has always tried to maintain a good health and fitness regime despite the hiccups along the way.

In June 2010, Pat was diagnosed with Wet Macular Degeneration in her left eye which required her to have monthly injections, within a year this condition had developed in the right eye also.

In October 2011, after having difficulty with swallowing Pat was diagnosed with Oesophageal Cancer which was treated with chemotherapy and surgery. When Pat’s health stabilised she returned to Ripples to rebuild her life physically and emotionally.

Although Pat is now legally blind she still attends Ripples classes regularly. Pat has created lasting friendships with other members and instructors which make her feel like she is part of a new little family. She believes her recovery is partly due to her fitness level that she has attained and the wonderful support from her Young at Heart friends. She is now proud to say she is still only pre-diabetic despite all her other health issues.

Throughout April Ripples Leisure Centre Squads had 14 swimmers compete at the Hancock Prospecting Australian Open (3rd - 10th) and Georgina Hope Swimmers Foundation Australian Age (13th - 18th) Championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. The national team included Molly McNamara, Dezmond Malone, Cameron Slaughter, Lauren Dahl, Jarred Wright, Matthew Aston-Brian, Joshua McCrorie, Lucy Harris, Jared Malone, Abbey Slaughter, Hannah McCrorie, Holly Sparks and Megan Cooper.

Swimmers were up against the best in the country (and the world) including James Magnussen, Cameron McEvoy, Alicia Coutts and Grant Hackett. Both Molly McNamara and Cameron Slaughter qualified as finalists for the 100m

butterfly and 100m freestyle bettering the squads results from last year.

Dezmond swam to a personal best time in the 100m backstroke while battling tonsillitis during the Age Championship event. Joshua McCrorie also lifted the senior boys relay team to a team best suffering a chest infection. Jarred Wright swam a 5 second personal best time in the 200im, Abbey Slaughter, Lucy Harris and the junior girls relay team also swam personal best times.

Looking ahead the Ripples Leisure Squads have gone through a number of challenges and changes in the last 12 months and are looking to keep driving forward into the coming winter short course season with establishment of the Maniah Betham Scholarship and the Australian Open Short Course Championships in November.

Learn to Swim lessons from 4 months to adults

Learn to Swim

At Ripples swim school we provide a range of group learning and

developmental classes catering for all ages and abilities from 4 months to

adults. Our lessons are skilled based, with an emphasis on progressive

learning experiences from building water confidence, correct stroke

technique and survival skills.

Our Instructors are AUSTSWIM/Swim Australia/ASCTA accredited and have been screened according to legislative

requirements. Combining technical knowledge and the ability to communicate to all ages, our instructors have a

caring, emphatic and inclusive approach to teaching.

Ripples swim school is based at two facilities St Marys and Penrith and is partnered with many industry leaders to

ensure we are delivering the highest quality swimming lessons to our students.

Ripples swim school operates in concurrent 12 week blocks and accepts new enrolments anytime throughout the

current block or from Week 11 for the proceeding block. All new school age students excluding non-swimmers will

require an assessment prior to enrolment to ascertain the correct level for your child. Assessments can be

booked through reception.

1. The risk of drowning does not go away in cooler periods of the year so nor should

swimming.

2. The skills and behaviours that are taught in lessons need constant reinforcement

throughout the year.

3. A break in lessons that stretches over many months will often result in a loss of

skills.

4. With a little extra attention, such as keeping children warm and drying them off

well when they leave the pool, swimming will stay comfortable and beneficial all

year.

5. Swimming is so beneficial to our health and fitness and being in a warm indoor

environment is an ideal activity to continue throughout winter.

Many parents believe that swimming during the cooler months could potentially

cause a child to get sick. While you don’t have to worry about your child getting cold in an indoor pool, there are a

few misconceptions that parents have that should be addressed.

The pool and air temperature is constant all year round. Children

need to be careful when exiting in the cold air, encourage your child

to have a hot shower after their lesson and dress them in warm

clothes and protect their head, body and feet with warm dry

clothes. It is not recommended to leave the swim centre wrapped in

a wet towel or swimwear.

So keep swimming through winter and have your children ready for the summer with fantastic swimming skills!

5 Reasons To Learn To Swim All Year Round!

Water Safety Road Show

When teaching freestyle, a

tip is to make sure that when

breathing to the side that the

corner of the goggles does

not leave the water. This

stops over rotation.

It’s never too late to learn to

swim. Swimming is a skill for

a life especially being an

island nation. As an adult

Ripples recognises that there

are varied reasons for

learning to swim including:

Achieving a lifetime goal,

having a family to care for,

getting over a trauma of fear

from earlier in life, improve

swimming ability, improve

fitness and overall wellbeing.

Our initial objective is to

build confidence and to help

the participant to let go of

the barriers that has held

them back from learning to

swim before this. As this

confidence grows greater

emphasis is focussed on drills

and skills to develop strokes

and fine tune technique.

Since 2012 Ripples have been

providing local preschools with

water safety education in which we

have expanded our program in

2015 to encompass primary and

high schools. Water Safety is

paramount to Ripples Leisure

Centre and is the catalyst for the

continuation of this FREE Water

Safety Road Show initiative.

During the month of March Ripples

attended 27 local preschools and

schools; educating over 3000

students on the dangers present in

various water environments and

ways for them and their loved ones

to stay safe. This program was well

received by schools, parents and

the students we presented to.

At Ripples, we believe that teaching

children from a young age about

water safety not only has a positive

influence on their lives but those of

their family and friends as well.

Water Safety education encom-

passes all water environments and

the dangers present. This will

provide the child to build

confidence and respect for the

water. Couple this program with

Ripples structured learn to swim

program and your child will expand

their in-depth knowledge of water

safety preparing them for a lifetime

of safe activity in and around the

water.

Ripples advocates the message

SWIM, SAFE, SURVIVE! And we

want every child to embrace this

water safety message.

Ripples will be spreading the

SWIM, SAFE, SURVIVE message

again later this year when our show

hits the road for another round of

water safety presentations.

If you are from a school or

preschool and would like us to

Safety Road Show please email

As we age on average we

lose approximately 10% of

muscle mass every decade,

so it is recommended to

complete a strength training

program 2-3 times a week to

maintain muscle mass,

strength and bone density.

Strength training can be a

very powerful tool in

reducing the signs and

symptoms of numerous

diseases and chronic

conditions such as diabetes

and osteoporosis.

Some of the benefits of

weight training are: it can

help relieve arthritis, improve

ones state of mind, increase

healthy heart tissue,

strengthen bones, improve

sleep, improves muscle

strength and improve

glucose control just to name

a few.
