JUNE 2017

Letter from the Bishop "It is not the Kingdom of Heaven that is a myth but the promise of Utopia." I read this recently among some of Tom Wright's more popular pieces. It struck a chord with me not least in the light of this coming month. This year we celebrate Pentecost on the 4th June and hold the General Election on the 8th June. Across the churches and denominations there is a call to prayer and for a fresh outpouring of God's Holy Spirit to renew and reinvigorate not only our churches but our national life. Both our Archbishops are encouraging this as are many other Christian denominations and leaders. Thy Kingdom Come is the banner title. Underneath that banner there is much encouragement being given to small groups gathering, churches putting on special events and Beacon events taking place in larger contexts such as will be in our Cathedral on Pentecost Sunday. The desire is that many will get involved and be given fresh energy and confidence both in their faith and in their daily living. Of course none of this need stop nor should stop simply because Pentecost Sunday comes and passes. Close on the heels of Pentecost is the General Election. It is being contested against a backdrop of deep and potential divisive questions and profound challenges about our national identity. What does strong and fair and healthy look like and mean? Most politicians, of all persuasions, enter the world of politics with a clear sense of wanting to serve the common good and make society a better place. They need our prayers and support. We are, to use an old phrase... our brother’s keeper. Each of us has a responsibility. Holding each other to account and voicing our concerns are things we all need to do, as is pressing for good education, health care and decent housing. Prayer and politics have distinct aspects to themselves but they are not separate and unrelated worlds.

We cherish, as a nation, our freedom. However we should never take freedom for granted. A free society requires a moral vision and solid values renewed in each generation. Pragmatism, expediency and short term successes will not suffice. Good democracy always protects minorities and allows minority views a respected place. Determining the proper boundaries to the powers of the state and the place of public and private are again vital to the maintenance of lasting freedom. Jesus challenged his disciples to watch and pray. The challenge is as pertinent now as then. +Alistair

Attention all ladies born in the 1950s There are almost 3.5 million women born in the 1950s who have been negatively impacted by increases in their State Pension age. Are you one of them? These changes were implemented by the 1995 and 2011 Pension Acts. Many women are still not aware that they will not receive their State Pension at the age of 60. There is a national group, known as WASPI (women against state pension inequality), who are campaigning for fair transitional state pension arrangements for all women affected by these changes. The WASPI campaign supports the principle of equalisation of the state pension age but does not agree with the unfair way the changes were implemented. If you would like to find out more and join our local group, please contact 01588 674761 or 01588 673542 or 07530333763 for further information.

All Saints Parochial Church Council - Culmington The PCC are delighted to announce that all the legal work has now been completed and the new Benefices of Bromfield, Ashford and Ludlow will now be ratified on June 1st. This means that All Saints will move to the Corvedale Group under Revd. John Beesley on that date. As the churches of Corvedale group are small covering a much reduced population, they will act as one group and share services. The new rota of services for All Saints is now produced on the back page. Revd. Beesley had already booked holiday for the last two weeks of June but we look forward to him officiating at our service on 4th June. In the meantime do go down the Dale to Diddlebury or Munslow and meet our new joint parishioners. You will be made very welcome. We have emerged from a long period of uncertainty without permanent pastoral care and can now look forward to a new and stable era. Clearly we all have to accept this may mean changes for everyone but believe that as parishioners of the Corvedale we have much in common with our Dale neighbours to build upon. Our grateful thanks have been given to the retired clergy of Ludlow Team for maintaining our services over the past two years. Andrew Pike and Robin Edwards - Churchwardens.

News from Corvedale Primary School How did the SATs go? This is a question I’ve been asked on a regular basis recently. Rightly or wrongly, this is a common topic of conversation for anyone in primary schools at this time of year. Our Y6 children completed them in the second week of May. There is a great deal of importance placed on the tests but there is quite rightly a lot of discussion surrounding the stresses for children (and teachers) associated with the whole SATs thing. The SATs (or Statutory Assessment Tests to give them their full title) are tests all children must take at the end of their primary school. They are all carried out throughout the country at the same time and a lot of secrecy and security surrounds them as they are delivered, stored, taken and then sent away for marking. The ‘SATs’ week began with an hour long reading paper on Monday. The children have a booklet containing three short passages of increasing difficulty which they must read and answer a set of fifty questions on the contents. The consensus is that the test was slightly better than last year as this year the reading age of the paper was at least somewhere near the children’s chronological age. Tuesday saw the forty minute Grammar and Punctuation test where the children were tested on their knowledge of subordinating and relative conjunctions, synonyms, noun phrases, colons and semi-colons, prepositions, possessive and relative pronouns and other really useful stuff. Spelling was next; twenty words such as bruise, thorough, sympathetic and monarch. Wednesday and Thursday involved three maths papers. The first, arithmetic – quite a lot of fractions, long multiplication and division

Page 16: RIPPLES - Culmington · 2017. 11. 28. · A free society requires a moral vision and solid values renewed in each generation. Pragmatism, ... rites and obsessive worship of dogma.

16

questions this year – followed by two further tests entitled ‘Reasoning’ each 40 minutes in length, a mix of all kinds of mathematics from algebra to measurement, line graphs to more fractions. We do need assessment of the learning that takes place in school and children do need to gain knowledge of the English language and mathematics of increasing complexity but what is difficult to comprehend is how schools are held so much to account in half a dozen tests on two subjects on one week of the year. A school can be deemed to have failed if the children’s results are below the National average. Primary Schools are about more than this. At Corvedale Primary School, and most others that I know of, we don’t judge SATs as the be all and end all of primary education. What about the other skills our children acquire and what about the other experiences they have? Surely they are important too? What SATs don’t take into consideration is the fabulous art work we do such as the amazing ‘Picasso Heads’ our class 3 have created from cardboard boxes, covered in Modroc and painted in vivid colours; or the beautiful sound of the children singing in preparation for the choir competition at Concord College; or the weaving frames created from natural materials to celebrate our wonderful World; or the dens built in forest school (class 1); or the swimming lessons each Tuesday at Ludlow Leisure Centre (class 2); or the differences between Cavaliers and Roundheads during the Civil War (class 3); or finding out what it was like living in a local castle (class 2) or making cheese straws and cherry cakes with Mrs Hughes, and lots more besides. How did the SATs go? Very well thanks, but in all honesty, there are far more important things going on in school as well. http://www.corvedaleschool.co.uk/ Jonathan Brough Head teacher

News from Onny C of E (A) Primary School May 2017 The summer term is as busy as ever with many visits, workshops and special events. This term nursery is enjoying a topic based on exploring a watery theme and finding out about the seaside so there are many models of fish, crabs and even sea anemones starting to appear! The Friends of Onny School (FOOS) have funded a wonderful new outdoor sandpit with a gravel area on which sits a real boat (kindly donated to us). Our bike track has had an extra lane added to allow for our wider wheeled tractors to use the “Nursery Road”. A grandparent has also donated a greenhouse so the children are all busy planting. Our nursery is very popular and will be providing 30 hours’ free nursery places in September for qualifying working parents. Do phone the school office if you would like more details (01584 856320). Lime Class (Reception and Year 1) are busy exploring dinosaurs which the children are really excited about. They are going to the “West Midlands Safari Park” to see the dinosaur exhibition. Beech Class (Year 2 and Year 3) are focussing on a topic on the rainforest. They are contrasting the rainforest to our forest site in Oaken Wood- forest school sessions are still their favourite afternoon of the week. Oak Class (Year 4,5 and 6) are studying the Tudors this term. This week Oak Class are at the Pioneer Centre on our annual residential visit with Lydbury North School. They have really enjoyed all the outward-bound activities; including assailing, caving, grass boarding, laser quest and canoeing. Next half term is likely to be even busier with all the end of term events. Year 6 will be preparing their Leaver’s Production and Leaver’s Service in St Michael’s Church. They will also attend the Leaver’s Service at Hereford Cathedral on Monday 10th July.

Little Lambs Playgroup We are extremely pleased with the success of Onny School Little Lambs playgroup. It is proving to be quite popular indeed for the little ones on a Friday morning to enjoy playing together with the many toys they have to hand in the school nursery class room - they are spoiled for choice! Each week a planned craft is put on for the children to get creative, I've seen some very crafty creations such as superhero lollipop sticks, peg dragonflies, planting cress and sunflower seeds, making cute Pom Pom chicks and pet turtles to name a few. Last week we even had a visit from two local tortoises which went down a bundle with the children and adults too! After

craft time the children sit down to enjoy a well earned snack! One mother said “it's like a little children's party each week!” It's wonderful now that the sun is making an appearance so they can burn off some steam in the nursery garden followed by a story and a sing along with all the actions to nursery rhymes. It's not just the children who have all the fun! Mums, Dads, carers and grandparents get the opportunity to have a cuppa or two and a good old natter, often indulging in whatever crafty craft has been set out for the morning (that's my favourite bit!) or better still, a chance to gaze at the latest new additions to playgroup, as we have some very cute little babies who come along and often look wide eyed at the busy goings on of the Little Lambs playgroup. Little lambs runs every Friday morning during term time only from 9am to 11am. £1.50 per child + 50p for every extra child.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Diddlebury & Westhope WI - May 2017 Joint Meeting Munslow WI and Diddlebury and Westhope WI This month Munslow WI hosted a joint meeting between themselves and Diddlebury and Westhope WI at Beambridge Village Hall. It was lovely having such a full hall with many members from both WI groups in attendance. The meeting was opened by Barbara Archer who welcomed everyone to the meeting and invited us all to stand and sing Jersusalem. As it was a joint meeting but hosted by Munslow, the business side of things this time was just for Munslow WI. A few items of business were discussed and decided and organised. There was also a reminder to all in the wider community that Munslow’s July meeting, which will be on Wednesday 12th July, will be an open meeting so all are welcome to come along, it will be a talk about “The Children of the Mayflower”. This is a great talk about a surprisingly local subject, and you will be sure of a really good evening. Barbara then went on to welcome herself to the floor to give our evening’s talk. The scheduled speaker was unable to attend, so Barbara very kindly stepped in to give us a talk about her travels to South America. Barbara and her husband joined their expedition ship, which was in comparison to most cruise ships on a smaller scale. There were a total of

88 guests on board. They started

their journey on the pacific side of Colombia and then sailed north going through the Panama Canal, and ending up in the ABC Islands. They had many stops on the way and experienced the amazing wild life and flora and fauna and varied architecture of this part of the world! Barbara shared her wonderful photos and kept us all entertained with her fantastic journey around a part of the world not many of us have enjoyed. On behalf of Diddlebury and Westhope, Kath thanked Barbara for her talk and Munslow WI for their hospitality. We all had a really lovely evening with tasty refreshments provided by Munslow. So again on behalf of Diddlebury and Westhope, thank you for a lovely evening. As a reminder to members of Diddlebury and Westhope WI for next month we will be having an afternoon outing for our next meeting, on Tuesday 13th June to Stokesay Court walled garden. We’ll be meeting at 2.30pm at the walled garden. Hope to see you all then, and let’s hope the weather is beautiful!! Munslow WI’s meeting will be at the usual time and place next month, which is Wednesday 14th June at 7.30pm at Beambridge Clubroom. The Women’s Institute is an amazing place to get out and meet women of all ages, so if you feel you would like to come along and give it a try we have two great groups within the Corvedale and you would be more than welcome to come along and see if it’s for you. May 24th; the Community Market refreshments raised £71. Eileen than introduced our speaker, Mr Mike Theobald who gave a most interesting illustrated talk entitled’ Napoleon and Me’. He explained that, as a teacher, head teacher and OFSTED inspector he had then become a trainer of teachers, and in that capacity had been invited to spend 4 weeks to train the teachers of St Helena. The British government had given the island £1 million to support the education at its 4 schools. MrTheobald decided to accept the challenge, including the 7 days journey via Capetown and a small vessel, the RMS St Helena which took 5 days to cross the Atlantic to finally be welcomed by the dolphins to the small volcanic mass of land. After his 4 week spell he reported to the governor that, contrary to popular belief, the standard of education was in fact far below what was acceptable. He was therefore invited back to spend a year trying to improve this state of affairs. He showed us photographs of the capital, Georgetown, which is the only access point to the island, reminiscent of England in the 1960’s. There are more indigenous forms of wild life on this very small island, 10miles x 4 miles, than in most of the rest of the world, but conversely there are no indigenous inhabitants amidst the total population of 4 thousand souls, many descending from the slaves from Africa, or from China and the far east. The coast line is very arid whilst the interior is rain forest though, as there is no fresh water the threat of draught is always a worry and in 2013 bottled water had to be brought in on the reliable RMS St Helena. The French influence is prominent on the Island as Napoleon was held there after his defeat in Europe, though his ‘prison’ looked to be extremely luxurious, and there is a ceremony at his grave side every year. The island is well fortified as

the Islanders feared an invasion by the French to rescue Napoleon, but this never materialized. Mr Theobald said that although the cost of living was extremely high as all consumables had to be imported, there was no economy on the island and the ‘Saints’, although welcoming, resented having to rely on subsidies from GB to survive and most adults of working age left to earn a living elsewhere, leaving their children behind to be looked after by other members of the family or neighbours – no wonder the education system was not up to scratch. Recently an airport had been built at a cost of £300 million by the British government, but due to dangerous cross winds only 1 plane has been able to land there, and the run way had not been licensed yet. Rose Lloyd thanked Mr Theobald for a most interesting insight into a British territory that most of us were not quite sure where to find on a map. Result of competition:- Flower of the month; 1st Azalea – Joyce Randle, 2nd Aquilegia – Sue Parker, 3rd Pansy - Janet Bryan Letter A – 1st Atlas – Sue Parker, 2nd Atlas - Eileen Pritchard, 3rd Abacus – Gill Parker. Corvedale Book Group - May 2017 The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne, an Irish author, was our May read. Nine year old Bruno has moved from his home in Berlin to an isolated area where there is nothing to do and no one to play with, when his father has promotion and takes the family to live at a house next to the camp he is managing, a camp that turns out to be Auschwitz. Through Bruno’s eyes we see his distress at being told to move his belongings and leave his three best friends behind. He challenges his father, without success and we see the family farewell to his father’s parents. Bruno’s grandmother is far from happy with her son’s promotion and what it entails. The rest of the family seem hopelessly naïve. Bruno’s 12 year old sister is compliant and soon adapts to leaving her dolls and the world of childhood behind when there are exciting soldiers to swoon over and a new tutor to please. Dreaming of being an explorer, Bruno investigates his new world, as he is left alone for long periods of time. From his new bedroom window he can see a ‘farm’ where everyone, even the adults, seems to wear striped pyjamas. He is curious and finds a way to leave the family compound and meets Shmuel who lives on the other side of a wire fence. Frustrated by the fence they each tell the other their story and try to play together – in the film version we see them trying chess and football. Shmuel confesses he is hungry and Bruno sometimes takes him food; at other times eating it himself before he gets to the fence. One day Bruno falls off his swing and cuts his knee. The gardener binds it up for him and Bruno is surprised to discover that he used to ‘practice’ as a doctor. Bruno and his family sit at dinner and do nothing when the gardener, now serving at table makes a mistake and a soldier chastises him. On another occasion, Shmuel is called in to help to wash and dry glasses for a party, Bruno offers him food then denies he has when the soldier suddenly appears. We see Bruno trying to balance his fear of the soldier and his anguish when he realises he has let down his friend. The story does not end well. After much discussion we concluded that although an easy enough read, despite the emotional awareness of the possible outcome, the story was naïve and ill-conceived. In general we would not recommend it. It was factually inaccurate in many places and this seriously detracted from the worth of the story. Bruno as a 9 year old narrator seemed a very

29

unquestioning child and it seemed unlikely that he, his mother and his sister were unaware of what was going on. There are better books about the Holocaust for both children and others. Despite some moral issues being raised, there is a danger that this one downplays the seriousness of a grim period of history which should not be forgotten. People who were at the camp have reviewed this book as being a poor description which seems to mock the suffering they endured. For our June read we move on to a book of short stories: A Winter Book by Tove Jansson. The reviews of this Swedish authors work are very positive. We will look forward to discussing a different genre of work on Election night, Thursday 8th June at 7 30 at the Swan at Aston Munslow.

Corvedale Garden Group - May 2017

We were delighted to welcome three new members on our visit to Aulden Farm on 20th May. Despite the threat of a downpour we were able to see all of Jill and Alum Whitehead’s fabulous garden without getting soaked (although I would love to return and see it on a bright sunny day in a few weeks time). The garden has been developed from open fields over the course of the last 20 years. The series of small rooms are divided by a variety of hedging materials and enticing gates stand ajar to tempt you to move between one area and the next. There is a large pond surrounded by just flowering Siberian iris in blues, mauves, whites, purples and yellows. Skilful use of metal arches and a hornbeam tunnel draw your eye down the centre of the garden. Mown pathways between unusual trees and shrubs provide a route around the garden too. Roses, iris, day lilies, fox gloves, geraniums, knautia, apple blossom, grasses all displayed different shades of spring green. In another area the deep purples of copper beech and black elder all added their own contrast. Blue and red coloured posts also drew the eye. A variety of sculptures, pots and garden buildings add character to the planting. At the far end of the garden an open, mown field housed the beds of Siberian iris – some in flower – though one of the reasons to go back is to see ‘There be dragons’ in bloom. Our visit ended happily choosing plants to buy from the well stocked nursery area and enjoying hot drinks and a variety of excellent cake in the barn.

Shipley Gardens, Holme Lacey, Hereford, HR26LS. Entry £5.00 per person. Our next visit is on Saturday 10th June. (This is the second Saturday of the month to avoid Father's Day weekend). We are looking forward to exploring in a very different way at Shipley Gardens. Bob and Lindsey Macadie have developed an extensive 30 acre informal garden, managed for birds, butterflies, insects and small mammals. There are hidden treasures around each corner as it is a superb photographer’s garden for both landscape and plant content. Trees, shrubs, perennials and differing annual flowers and vegetables add to the tapestry. A Wye Valley Heritage Homestead stands on a site occupied since Roman

times when there was a ford and a ferry. The garden is said to be fascinating and I hope you will join us to visit it. Situated 40 miles/60 minutes from the Swan at Aston Munslow, it promises to be a fascinating trip. Please let me know if you would like to join us. We are happy to share lifts. The Flower Garden at Stokesay Court Although we are often asked to provide "wild flowers" for a wedding, once we get down to the details of how a couple would like their wedding flowers to look, we realise that what they really mean is "garden flowers", as opposed to stiff, formal high street ones. The wedding we provided flowers for at the weekend, however, was a real wild flower event; the first we have ever done. The couple getting married were Alice and Tim, a pair of super outdoorsy people who are so in love with nature and being active in the open air that they began their wedding day with a fell run in the welsh hills above the campsite where they were marrying. This convinced us that they really meant "wild"! At the Flower Garden we picked soft flowers and foliage in shades of green, white and yellow. In our own cottage garden we got up early before the pigs were out and cut branches of hawthorn, guelder rose and field maple. Then we went out into the lane and picked buckets and buckets of lovely foamy cow parsley. The flowers exactly suited the venue, an old stone barn beautifully converted with big high windows and a friendly atmosphere. The wholesome runners milled around in their lycra, red-faced and panting, while we filled milk churns and tied posies onto the backs of chairs, but by the time we left they were transformed into neat and smart wedding guests, all eyes on the lovely dainty bride, perfectly poised amidst a sea of frothy white flowers. Ludlow will be going to the dogs again this year Following its third successful Dog Day event last July which raised nearly £21,000 for mainly local charities, Ludlow Rotary Club is planning another Ludlow Dog Day in the beautiful grounds of Stokesay Court again this year. The Rotary Club is determined to better last year’s result, when some 3500 people, many with their canine friends, turned up to the event which was acknowledged by all as an outstanding success and a wonderful family day out. As last year there will be a large number of fun dog competitions ranging from the best rescue dog to the scruffiest mutt, with much in between. In addition there will be a full programme of special events with dog display teams and demonstrations including flyball, dog agility and dog obedience. For human consumption during the day there will be tasty food, tea and beer. There will also be stalls offering a wide variety of countryside fare and doggy accessories, and a children’s activity area. The main beneficiaries this year will be Hope House Hospice, The Alzheimer’s Society, Canine Partners and Forest Dog Rescue. Gates open at 10am on Sunday 23 July. For more information and the opportunity to buy advance tickets at reduced prices see www.ludlowdogday.org.uk.
