Happy Valentine’s Day!

Welcome to RIO VISTA! The official neighborhood newsletter program of the

2 www.riovistaonline.com • RioVista!

I can’t believe it’s February already! It’s been hectic time for everyone in South Florida over the past few months. We had an events-packed holiday season, a week of brutally-cold (for South Florida!) weather and a series of major NFL events, highlighted by the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl, that brought many more than our usual share of seasonal visitors to the area. And we we’ve been very busy right here in Rio Vista with our own neighborhood events and happenings.

The Annual Rio Vista Holiday Party kicked off the holiday season for us and was once again a huge success! The food was terrific, the kids

had a great time with games and the Rock-Climbing Wall and neighbors renewed old friendships and made a few new ones. If you haven’t yet seen the pictures from the party, they’re online on our RVCA website at www.riovistaonline.com. Check them out!

Our RVCA Winterfest Boat Parade Viewing Party at Abreu Park was next up on the holiday calendar for our Rio Vista neighborhood. RVCA Vice President, Nancy Messing, gave us her take on the event. “As if on cue, the rain stopped, just as the lead boat emerged from out of the darkness. The 2009 Winterfest Boat Parade came into view, much to

the delight of children and adults who were lucky enough to all have great sight lines from Abreu Park in Rio Vista. The downtown residential high rise buildings along the river provided a nice backdrop from our viewing area. Traveling east on the New River from downtown Fort Lauderdale, our vantage point really was quite spectacular, as

the river narrows there at Abreu Park and the boats were just a few feet away. A number of larger yachts had Tow Boat USA or other tugs pulling lines away from the stern and working hard and fast to straighten them out as they rounded the curve just east of our Park. Lynn and Bill Bodor served up pizza and beer under the tent, and neighbors, families and friends all had a great time.”

The weekend of January 23-24 in Rio Vista saw the annual Campout & Carti Gras event, spearheaded successfully once again by Ted Bertolett and friends. The golf cart parade around the neighborhood featured some of the most creatively decorated carts yet, bringing smiles and laughter to participants and parade observers alike. As the day turned to evening, Virginia Young Park was loaded

again with tents and campers and the campfire storytelling was a hit with everyone. This event is becoming legendary in Rio Vista and our thanks to everyone who participated.

In other neighborhood news, the Tunnel Top Park project is still on the radar. Our Parks Committee Chair Wingate Payne recently reported that the project was delayed for a little reengineering for the parking spaces in front of the Edgewater as negotiated by Commissioner Romney Roger-- this after delays for final state approval and negotiations on whether the contractor would accept more improvements for the park since it was so below the expected amount. In a recently received message from the City, she was told that the contractor was waiting for some long lead items. The City’s Engineering Dept. also stated they’d be in touch with Wingate to discuss the additional work previously discussed (i.e. more improvements, as noted above). As of Tuesday, Feb. 9th, construction hadn’t yet started...we’ll keep you posted on the latest developments as they happen!

Another parks-related development is in the process of being resolved as we go to press. The City of Fort Lauderdale, after conferring with RVCA, has agreed to relocate a very large Poinciana Tree donated from a Rio Vista neighbor from where it had placed it in Hector Park to either Abreu Park or Tunnel Top Park. The tree was simply put into Hector Park by the City without consulting RVCA and immediate vicinity neighbors. After RVCA and neighbors questioned and objected to the placement of the tree in Hector Park and pointed out some good reasons that it was not very suitable for Hector Park, the City agreed to relocate the tree to Abreu Park after consultation with RVCA.

We want to extend our ‘Congratulations!’ to Rio Vista’s own Williford family. Brothers Christopher and Duncan sailed their way into history by finishing first and third and topping over 220 other Optimist class sailors in the 2009 Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta. The brothers competed in the Regatta which was held over a four day period in December on Biscayne Bay. That’s a great accomplishment and we wish you good luck in 2010!

In other youth news, RVCA Board Member Mike Orlando advises that Federal Little League Baseball is now registering boys and girls ages six to 16 for its upcoming 2010 Little League baseball season. Registration will be at beautiful Floyd Hull Stadium located just 5 minutes from Rio Vista, 800 SW 28th Street, just behind the Armory off S.R. 84. The 2010 season runs from approximately February through May includes a 20 game regular season, All-Star play and a chance to make it all the way to Williamsport, PA and the official Little League World Series, as seen on ESPN each July.

Federal Little League was chartered by the official Little League youth baseball with the help of Rio Vista’s own Floyd Hull more than 50 years ago. The Park boasts three regulation sized baseball fields and one softball field. It is the only Little League Park with grandstands and a full time PA broadcaster. Last year’s opening day pitch was thrown by Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler and our District Commissioner and Rio Vista neighbor, Romney Rogers.

For registration information contact 954 525-4910. For more information contact the League President John McGinnis, 954-822-1143 or the President-elect Jonathan Duffield 954-609-8570.

In closing, Spring is just around the corner...and we’ll see you around the neighborhood!

As you are aware, Fort Lauderdale has close ties with Haiti and has been deeply affected by the devastation of the recent earthquake. Many

residents and staff members alike have been personally affected and the city quickly mobilized to collect funds and supplies for delivery to Haiti. Our office received a report of members of the police department who took supplies by private plane to Haiti, searched for family members and continue to provide needed assistance to as many as possible. A team of South Florida firefighters including some Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue personnel also spent time on a search and rescue mission in the devastated island and worked hard to rescue and pull survivors from the rubble. The City of Fort Lauderdale is

implementing several initiatives to raise funds and donate to the American Red Cross. Please visit this city webpage to find out how you can help: http://www.fortlauderdale.gov/news/2010/haiti_relief.htm.

The luck of the Irish is already in effect. The Fort Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Day Festival and Parade is not just a one-day event so start celebrating now. Festivities are already underway with a Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner taking place at Hugh’s Catering on February 19th from 6-9pm. I’d like to thank the Planning Committee for hosting this fundraising event in support of the Parade. You can also go pub hopping when The Irish Pub Hop begins at 5:30pm on February 26th. Saturday, March 13th is parade day. Begin your day at the Festival at Huizenga Plaza and along the Riverwalk at 11:30am, then make your way to the parade route along East Las Olas from SE 8th Ave to SE 1st Ave for the 2:00pm parade start. Bring the entire family and be entertained with live music, entertainment and dance, cultural games, sheep herding, currach racing and hurling…and more. For more information about all of the St. Patrick’s Day activities, please check them out at http://www.ftlaudirishfest.com.

If you can’t wait for St. Patrick’s Day to enjoy our downtown, why not head to the SunTrust Jazz Brunch along the Riverwalk from Esplanade Park (400 SW 2nd Street) to Riverfront. The SunTrust Sunday Jazz Brunch is an ideal way to relax and enjoy Fort Lauderdale’s scenic Riverwalk. Listen to the soulful sounds of outstanding local jazz artists on four stages from 11a to 2p on the first Sunday of each month.

The SunTrust Sunday Jazz Brunch is produced by the City of Fort Lauderdale and is sponsored by SunTrust, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Las Olas Riverfront, News 610 WIOD and 93.9 WMIA. For more information, please call our 24-hour hotline at (954) 828-5363 or visit www.fortlauderdale.gov/life.

Everyone is talking about the Census, and rightly so because April 1st is Census Day. I have encouraged you in a past newsletter to participate in the census. Did you know that it is mandatory to participate? This is serious business with serious implications if an accurate count in not obtained. So can I say it too often? No. Once you receive your Census questionnaire in the mail, please complete and immediately return it. All of us will thank you when we see that our city is able to receive all the federal funding needed and our communities are well served. It has been estimated that each person missed in the count will cost our community $1,000.00. So, fill your form in, mail it back and make sure your neighbors and family members do too. Don’t forget “United States Census 2010 – It’s in our hands.”

Many of you have connections with Miss Harryette

Johnson, Fort Lauderdale’s wonderful Kindergarten teacher. Your children may have been her students…or you may have been her student…or you may know other students. Please be sure to pass on this news to everyone who knew Miss Johnson. She turned 90 years old on February 1st – let’s celebrate with cards and phone calls during the month of

February!! (Contact info below.)

For many years Miss Johnson taught four and five-year-old boys and girls in her schoolhouse, just behind her own home on NE Second Avenue. This was before the days of required car seats…and Miss Johnson picked up all sixteen students every morning in her station wagon…then delivered them home again at noon. She used that time to teach them the names of Florida trees, plants, and flowers, as well as manners! Some Fridays, she took the class to the beach, each wearing their orange “bubble” for safe swimming. Every Christmas they caroled on Las Olas where shopkeepers treated them to cookies and candy. Who could forget the Thanksgiving Play when the four-year-olds were Indians and the five-year-olds were Pilgrims in an original play written by Miss Johnson. Authentic costumes were worn and real pumpkin pies were part of the props. This event attracted alumni of all ages as everyone crowded into Miss Johnson’s backyard and enjoyed Cokes in real bottles and homemade cookies for refreshments. The traditions could go on and on…the back alley, the green chair, the phonics notebooks, the painted cigar boxes, “Fred” the neighbor who cared for the yard, “Miss Irene” who visited every winter, the birthday gifts – a shirt for the boys and a handmade dress for the girls, the garden where the birthday student got to pull up a carrot!

After Miss Johnson retired, she moved to her home in Georgia where she still resides. She is thinking of moving into an assisted living place in Fitzgerald, near Tifton, GA. Yet for now, she lives alone, still does her own cooking, and stays active in St. Simons, GA. Her eyesight is very limited so she has friends who read to her and take her places. She has a machine that helps her to read cards and see photos. If you write a card, it would be helpful to use a dark pen and write in large letters. She really enjoys hearing from students and parents who she knew when she lived and taught in Florida.

Miss Johnson gave permission for her contact info to be given. Please circulate this information to others who you know would like to contact this very special lady during her 90th Birthday Celebration this February!

“Ask Lori…Parrish on Appraisal”

Broward County Property Appraiser Lori Parrish Answers Your Questions…

“Copies of Deeds are Public Records and Free”

Dear Lori,

We received a solicitation to get the deed to our property here in Deerfield Beach with a fee involved of course. My wife and I were wondering how to obtain a copy of our deed instead of through an intermediary. If you could direct us to the proper agency, either online or in person to get a copy, we would appreciate it.

The Levitt Family, Deerfield Beach, FL (via email)

Every year our office hears of new mailings aimed at Broward County homeowners. The latest scam seems designed to trick you into believing for a substantial fee, a company will send you a “certified deed” for your property. Unfortunately, this practice seems to be legal but is very misleading.

Your deed is a document or written legal instrument which, when executed and delivered, conveys an interest in or legal title to a property. Deed recordation is the process of registering a transfer of real property with the Broward County Records Taxes and Treasury Division.

The truth is deeds and many other important documents are already available online and free at Broward County’s Records, Taxes and Treasury Division’s website and linked from our office’s website. Older deed prior to 1977 and recorded deeds utilizing social security numbers must be ordered in person or by written request. The county charges a nominal fee for reproduction ($1.00 a page/$2.00 certified).

Reviewing and obtaining a copy of your deed is simple: Go to www.broward.org/records and enter the public search field. Simply enter the name of the homeowner and you will be shown applicable property data enabling you to retrieve and print a copy of the recorded deed. On the www.bcpa.net website, simply click on the “book number”, located under the “sales history” chart on the property record page to locate deed information.

If you would like more information about deeds or to obtain a free copy, please visit our website at www.bcpa.net or contact our office directly at 954.357.6830.

ThE FORT LAuDERDALE GARDEn CLuB’S 2010 SECRET GARDEn TOuRThe Fort Lauderdale Garden Club’s 2010 Secret Garden Tour is taking place this Saturday, Feb. 20th. Six beautiful gardens in the Las Olas and Harbor Beach area will be featured.

These magnificent estates are all waterfront properties, wonderful examples of landscape architecture, meditation gardens, private quiet spaces and flamboyent arenas for grand entertaining -- we even have some local Fort Lauderdale lore in a property having the distinction of being featured in the movie “Where The Boys Are”.

Tickets for the event can be ordered online at www.FLGC.org or by calling the Garden Club at 954-561-8475. The tour runs from 10AM-3PM. You begin the tour by bringing your receipt or ID to the kiosk in the parking lot of Church By The Sea at 2700 Mayan Drive (corner of A1A & Mayan Drive) where you will receive your entry packet and map. (NOTE: Church By The Sea is not a principal in this tour and cannot be called for information and/or tickets). All visitors are responsible for their own transportation -- we encourage carpooling -- and will be greeted at each garden gate by Garden Club members familiar with the property.

These Garden Club members can trace their roots to 1927 when, in response to a devastating 1926 hurricane, 22 women formed this club with the intention of restoring the natural beauty of Fort Lauderdale. One of their very first projects was the planting of the stately Royal Palms which grace Las Olas Boulevard today. Currently, there are over 170 men and women who belong to the Club and the vision has expanded to meet the times.

The FLGC has a very strong Youth Gardening Program promoting gardening in 14 schools, with the students ranging from Pre-school through High School. The 2009 Standard Youth Flower Show, “Planet Green”, attracted 900 student entries. Fifty-one students were awarded scholarships to Camp Wechiva, an ecological and nature-based camping experience operated by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs. The Garden Club also provides monthly programs open to the public on a wide variety of gardening and environmental topics, and presents an annual Standard Adult Flower Show. It maintains the Sensory Garden at the Lighthouse for the Blind of Broward County and the Rose Garden at Stranahan House. It supports Habitat for Humanity, Prison Therapy and World Gardening. All these projects require dedication and commitment on the part of our members and the continued support of the community-at-large. A successful Garden Tour will help us continue to provide all these services and to inspire children and adults alike to venture out into their gardens and participate in the beauty of nature.

Rebecca Schuberth, President of the Garden Club, is a Harbor Beach resident living on Virginia Drive.
