Plans for Commercial Corner According to an announcement by Tonto Verde Association President Steve Calandrella, work may start soon on the construction of a gas station and “Corner Store Market” on the corner of Forest Road and Rio Verde Drive. Work on this project started some 20 months ago when Rio Verde Services sold the property to Desert Troon Limited, LLC. In January 2016, Desert Troon requested and was granted a rezoning of this parcel into a residential section of approximately eight acres and a C-1 commercial section of approximately three acres. Commercial Section It is Desert Troon’s intent to sell the commercial section to CST Brands, Inc. for construction of a gas station and “Corner Store Market.” According to Steve Calandrella, “CST Brands provides an upscale convenience market with on-site food preparation, fresh produce and coffees, a quality selection of beverages, along with other convenience items in a clean, inviting facility.” Check out the company’s website at www.cstbrands.com The image seen on the website is not indicative of what will actually be constructed. The TVA Design Review Committee has architectural control over the design elements and will ensure the design is harmonious with the surrounding community. Residential Section Desert Troon’s plans for the eight-acre residential section include construction of 30 smaller size, free standing single family homes along a single roadway named Blue Sky Drive. Celebrating the Desert’s Second Spring Seasonby Noelle JohnsonFor those of us who live full or part-time in the desert Southwest, we have the wonderful privilege of celebrating not just one, but two spring seasons. We are all familiar with the anticipation of waiting for the winter’s cold to dissipate and plants to begin to respond with new leaves unfurling and new flower buds starting to open. Well, the same thing occurs in the desert as summer temperatures begin to fade. Our ‘second spring’ appears in late September when the days are noticeably shorter and the shadows lengthen. Plants respond to lower air and soil temperatures by a sudden spurt of growth, often in the form of new leaves and blossoms, giving them a fresher appearance as they shake off the effects of the intense summer heat. Time for New GrowthAt this time of year, plants have the opportunity to do the things that the stresses of surviving the summer heat didn’t allow them to do. Now, they can devote resources to new growth above the ground and equally importantly, below the ground. A substantial root system is vital for plants to not only survive but thrive. Have you ever wondered why fall is the best time to add new plants to the garden? It all comes down to the roots. Planting in fall allows the roots three full seasons to grow before the heat of summer arrives. The more roots a plant has, the better it can handle the heat of summer.Time to EnjoyThe desert’s second spring season is a time where people re-emerge from the air-conditioned comfort of their homes and rediscover the beauty of the outdoors with all its colors and fragrance. I invite you to take a moment to enjoy the opportunity that we have with two spring seasons to enjoy. September Gardening Tasks:1. Lightly prune overgrown bougainvillea, lantana, yellow bells, and other frost-tender plants pruning them no more than ½ of their size. This is the last month of the year to safely prune these types of plants so that they have time to harden off before freezing temperatures arrive.2. Get roses ready for fall blooms by fertilizing them with an all-purpose fertilizer, watering well before and after applying. Prune away 1/3 of the outer rose bush, removing any sunburned foliage and spent blossoms.3. Citrus need three applications of fertilizer spread out through the year. September is the last time they should be fertilized this year.4. Got weeds? Spray them now before the weather cools as weed killer doesn’t work as well when temperatures cool and weed growth slows down.5. Remove faded summer annual flowers from containers and refresh the soil using a planting mix that is specially formulated for containers. While it may be tempting to add cool-season annuals such as geraniums and petunias now, wait until after mid-October as temperatures can still hit above 100 degrees for the next few weeks.

Meet the Horses...Reigning Grace Ranch Home to 41 Horsesby Mary Jo AbbeReigning Grace Ranch, a 501(c)(3) charity supported by many Verde residents, is home to 7 Tennessee Walking Horses, 1 Appaloosa, 2 Thoroughbreds, 1 Paso Fino, 1 Clydesdale, 2 Spotted Draft Crosses, 4 American Paint Horses, 3 Palominos, 7 Mini-Horses, and 24 Quarter Horses. Most of the horses at the ranch have been donated or rescued and many were victims of abuse. Each one of these horse has a story to tell. Let’s meet a few:Joshua: The horse with the most impressive pedigree is Joshua. He is the great grandson of Secretariat. Because of a severe injury to his front leg, which resulted in some permanent loss of motion, he could no longer race. He was six years old when he came to RGR. After arriving at the ranch, RGR founders Christopher and Amanda Moore worked with him and little by little he gained more and more range of motion in his leg. Today he runs, frolics, teases and enjoys life. The official registered Jockey Club name given to him at birth was “Joshua’s Dream.” Appropriately, Joshua in the bible means God Rescues. Indeed, He does!Mr. Bam Bam Rubble: Bam Bam is an American Paint Horse. He came to the ranch as a much loved, retired Dressage horse. Many people refer to Dressage as “horse ballet.” Bam Bam is about 13 years old and perhaps one of the most popular horses at the ranch because he has such a willing heart and disposition. Whether it is being groomed, on a trail ride, being painted, or doing obstacle or ground work, Bam Bam loves all aspects of being involved with the children.Genesis: On a very cold Arizona night in February 2011, God blessed RGR with its first foal. The foal’s mother was a rescued range mare named Sugar. The foal was named Genesis. Genesis stood for the beginning of a new life for his herd and the end of neglect and abuse.Lady Gray: Lady Gray is a Tennessee Walking Horse. She came to RGR from a breeding ranch. However, she was sheltered from the normal duties of a mare. Because she was greatly outnumbered by a barn full of expensive show stallions, she learned how to be a stallion rather than a mare and was often referred to as a “tom-boy.” At RGR she is a true Southern Belle. Lady Gray loves people. She likes to bask in the sun at the ranch with her aunt whose name is Patience. Aria: Aria is also a Tennessee Walking Horse. She came from Florida along with Mr. Legato. Their owners were retiring and so RGR became the recipients of these two horses. Aria is very well mannered, easy going, loving and adores the attention of humans. She is not fond of work but loves to listen to the conversations of the children around her. She is also known for being able to wiggle her lips.Tow Mater: Tow Mater is an all-black, miniature horse. He is friendly, cute and a true escape artist. He has been known to escape from his paddock at night, mow down corn in the garden, and be back in the paddock by morning. Amanda says he has already mastered the art of escape from his paddock at the new RGR location.

Friends from the Verdes Enjoy Park Cityby Lucy LucasPark City, Utah, was a cool get away for many of our neighbors and friends during the month of August. There was plenty of hiking, biking, golf and sightseeing to keep everyone busy for a few days or the entire month. The highlight of the month was the Mason Cup at Park City golf tournament and dinner on Tuesday, Aug. 9. Thirty-one golfers participated in the tournament at the Wasatch Mountain Lakes golf course. Afterwards, all our friends from the Verdes enjoyed dinner at the beautiful Blue Boar Inn. The golf tournament was won by the team of Bill and Donna Watson, Bill Bunker (Again! Better check his handicap) and Bob Mason (He gets his name on his own trophy!). Planning for next year has already begun. Same time, same place. Hope you will join in the fun!

Friends in Tanzania...Allen and Caroline Meyer were joined by friends Sharon Hoffman and Denise Ford for an August East African adventure in Tanzania. They enjoyed wonderful animal viewing up close and personal as well as visits to Maasai and Iraqw villages and school. They also visited a ceramics shop where water filters were being made for home and schools use. In the left photo Allen and Caroline pose with a Maasai woman. In the right photo Sharon Hoffman and Denise Ford model wedding clothes made of leather.
