Private Treaty SaleAll cattle will be pre-priced, and price sheets will be available one week prior to sale day. Bidding will begin at 11:30 a.m. on the bull

lots, and will start with the highest pre-price and work to the lowest pre-price. Female sale order will be: pairs, bred fall heifers, open heifers. If one or more buyers is interested in the same animal, we will bid that animal off in $100 dollar increments. If only 1 buyer is interested in an animal, it will sell at the listed price. No cattle will

be sold prior to sale day, March 20th.

General InformationSale Location: The sale will be held at Rinkes Cattle Co. From the stoplight on 75 hwy in Holton, go 3 miles north to 254th rd, 1 mile east to Q4 rd., then 1/4 mile north. Complimentary refreshments will be available sale day.Inspection of Cattle: The cattle will be available for viewing by appointment at Rinkes Cattle Co. Please contact Bruce, Brandon, or Justin to arrange a time!Health: All cattle will be accompanied by proper health certifi cates for immediate shipment. The bulls sell guaranteed reproductively sound and will be semen tested. Bulls have tested negative for BVD-PI type 2. All females have been examined by a veterinarian and sell safe in calf (bred heifers), or guaranteed open. Additionally, all females have received the offi cial calfhood brucellosis vaccination and have tested negative for BVD-PI type 2. . Lot Numbers: Ear Tags will correspond with the lot numbers in the catalog. Terms: All cattle sell according to the terms and conditions of the American Angus Association. Liability: All persons attending this sale do so at their own risk. Trucking: Bulls and Females taken sale day or picked up during the fi rst week after the sale will receive a $25/head discount. Cattle have access to mineral year round. The mineral is a custom blend that is specifi cally balanced for breeding and fl y control. Cattle are sprayed with insecticide as needed during the summer grazing season. Since we went to using fl y control in our mineral, we usually only have to spray once per grazing season.

Caring for your BullAll bulls sold will be accompanied by proper reproducti ve examinati on paperwork. Bulls have been checked by Dr. Dan Degenhardt, DVM. However, please pay att enti on to your bull throughout your breeding season. Between semen check and turnout, things can happen that will inhibit your bull from proper breeding. If you see your bull breed a cow/heifer, record the number and make sure that animal is not in heat again in 18-21 days. If multi ple animals are coming back into heat, there is a problem. Please call us so we can set up a plan to get your bull re-examined, and if need be get a bull out to you on loan to get your catt le bred. Secondly, view your young bull as an investment. We expect a lot out of our catt le, but in order to get that producti vity they must be cared for properly. Upon completi on of your breeding season (60-120 days is recommended), gather up your bull(s) and allow them ti me to rest and recover prior to the next breeding season. These are young bulls that sti ll need a properly balanced diet to conti nue development. Young bulls need access to grass or hay, in additi on to a supplemental protein source for bone and muscle development, as well as mineral. If you take care of your bull, he will conti nue to develop properly and will be producti ve in your herd for many years to come!

EPD’s ExplainedExpected Progeny Difference (EPD) , is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in fi rst-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to fi rst-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Bulls ADG ExplainedWe believe in raising our bulls on a high roughage diet, consisti ng of sorghum or corn silage, brome silage, alfalfa and prairie hay. We use disti llers grain as a supplemental protein to the alfalfa, and we work to use as litt le corn as possible when growing the bulls. All rati ons are balanced with a custom blend mineral.Fall Bulls are crep-fed while on the cow using Purina Accurati on, of which they consume about 2-3 lbs/head/day. Once weaned, ususally the fi rst week of June, these bulls are placed on a grow rati on consisti ng of 75% forage to gain 3 lbs/day. The ADG number that accompanies each bull refelcts their gain from weaning to February 15, 2015.Spring Bulls are weaned (fi rst 2 weeks of September, depending on the weather) and placed on a similar grow rati on with just a touch more energy and protein vs. the fall bulls. The rati on consists of the same feedstuff s, with 65% of the rati on being forage, aiming for a gain of 3.75 lbs/day. Once the bulls are lined out from weaning, the “On Feed Test” begins in the middle of October and runs to February 15, 2015. This is where the ADG number comes from on the Spring Yearling Bulls.

Welcome to the Angus Geneti c Alliance Private Treaty Performance Bull and Female Sale. It is our pleasure to bring you a very uniform set of Angus bulls and a very functi onal set of females that will work in the commercial cowmen’s environment. Our breeding philosophy has always been emphasized producing problem free females. We raise all our own replacement females and uti lize our own yearling bulls cleanup aft er A.I. season. Our emphasis has been on balanced trait selecti on for ferti lity, carcass quality, feed effi ciency, mothering ability, milk, calving ease and dispositi on. That all starts with cow families that consistently produce a quality product every year.

As the industry rebuilds cow numbers, many of you may be managing and calving 2 year old heifers. Some general recommendati ons to reduce dystocia during heifer calving is to consider breed, birth weight and calving ease Expected Progeny Diff erence, actual birth weight and physical structure of the bull when making mati ng decisions. Sire selecti on and proper development of the replacement heifer are the key factors to reduce calving diffi culti es. Smaller underdeveloped heifers have higher incidence of dystocia due to smaller pelvic openings. To ensure proper growth of the heifer, the goal should be to gain 1.5 to 1.75 pounds per day to weigh 65% to 70% expected mature weight at 14 months of age at fi rst breeding. With proper management, nutriti on and improved sire selecti on, calving diffi culti es and calf death loss can be minimized.

The majority of these heifers have been purchased from bull customers. They have been offi cially calf hood vaccinated and are ready to take home for you to breed!

Half of these heifers originated from a long time bull customer, the other half came off 1 ranch in Oklahoma. These heifers have been pasture exposed to 2 sons of SAV Final Answer, both low birth weight heifer bulls. These heifers are mainly May 2013 born, so they will be 27+ months old at time of calving. A popular questi on this ti me of year is “How much can I aff ord to pay for a bull?” A go-to answer is usually, “How much revenue loss would you have from a pasture full of open cows?” Aft er all, we oft en de-value the role of the bull. We forget he is a crucial part of the equati on to making our product. Now, the questi on is a good one to ask. Especially aft er watching calf prices climb seemingly all of 2014 and the prices paid for bred heifers at year-end, it is only logical to wonder what a good bull will cost this spring. Old rules of thumb are good to refl ect on. For instance, “two ti mes the value of a fat steer” or “four to fi ve ti mes the value of a feeder calf” are both common measures used by old ti mers to determine the value of a bull. So, these ideas were tested with fi gures with historical prices from the Illinois Performance Tested Bull Sale and prices paid for feeders and fats from Nati onal Agricultural Stati sti cs Service. As it turns out, using values from 1996 to 2014 (last 19 years) the average bull price was four ti mes the value of a feeder calf and 2.1 ti mes the value of a fat steer. Looks like those old rules of thumb work prett y well. Using these multi pliers, we can speculate to the average price of bulls this coming sale season. Looking at recent market reports, 500 lb. feeder calves are bringing $2.40 or more. Thus, value of a 5-weight feeder calf is conservati vely $1,200. History tells us four ti mes that value will get us close to the average. Thus 4 x $1,200 = $4,800 for an average bull price.A conservati ve price for fat steers weighing 1300 lb. is $1.60. Therefore the math tells us a fat steer values out at nearly $2,100. The previously stated multi plier of 2.1 ti mes the value of a fat steer would yield an average bull price of just over $4,400. So, we have a conservati ve range of $4,400 to $4,800 for the average bull price. That said, there will be many bulls that bring in excess of those fi gures. So, what factors contribute to bulls bringing more than the average? Are they worth the extra money?For simplicity, let’s say a bull breeds 25 cows per year for four years resulti ng in 100 calves over his lifespan. With these conservati ve assumpti ons, even a small improvement in a valuable trait can greatly increase a bull’s value. For instance, Calving Ease EPD is defi ned as the diff erence in percentage of unassisted births. So, let’s say you purchase a bull that is fi ve points bett er in his CE than the breed average for current sires. For both Angus and Simmental, that would mean purchasing a bull in the top 10 percent of the breed for that trait—not an unrealisti c buy. The 5 point improvement should translate to 5 percent more unassisted births. In the real world, it’s fair to say half of assisted births don’t make it. Thus, a 5 percent improvement in CED could easily translate to 2.5 percent more calves. Out of 100 calves sired over a lifeti me, that’s 2.5 more calves. The added value from improved CE would be $3,000 (2.5 more calves x 500 lbs x $2.40/lb.). The most common example for added value of a bull is improved EPDs for weaning weight. Let’s say you purchase a bull with a WW EPD of 60 (breed average for Angus is 50). That’s 10 additi onal pounds at weaning per calf. If the bull sires 100 calves in a lifeti me and a pound is worth $2.40, then the result is $2,400 more income over his lifeti me when compared to the average of current sires. Another fi gure bull buyers can look at are $ values (Weaned Calf Value ($W), Beef Value ($B), All-Purpose Index (API), Terminal Index (TI)). These values are expressed in dollars and if you match your herd needs with the correct index, they can help you be more profi table. Understanding and Uti lizing Economic Indexes in Sire Selecti on is a good resource for learning more about the role $ values play in selecti on. When selecti ng your next herd sire, identi fy the traits that can add dollars to your operati on. Don’t sacrifi ce functi onality, structural soundness, docility and other traits that can aff ect longevity. View purchasing a bull as an investment and treat it as such. Investi ng in a good bull that can improve profi table traits in your herd can allow your farm to be more competi ti ve no matt er the market dynamic. Bott omline, bulls are a signifi cant contributor to profi t or loss in your catt le herd. They have an impact now and for years to come if you are retaining replacement females. Look for traits that hold value in your market. Find a bull that can inject those traits.
