Bentley graduates picture their futureOn June 24, sixteen Bentley

high school graduates cele-brated their completion of high school in the Blindman Valley Ag hall fi lled with fam-ily and friends, teachers and staff and dignitaries and are now moving on to contem-plate their future.

The Theme chosen for the event was Picture Your Future.

Tables were decorated with graduate-chosen items - many with fl owers or candles.

The evening started out with a full-catered meal for the graduates, their invited guests, staff and dignitar-ies provided by Bob Ronnie Catering.

Masters of Ceremonies for the banquet were Grade 11 students Breanne Bickford and Ty Schneider. Caleb Schmidt said grace.

Graduates Christiana Alapo, Ally Holden, and Harley Whitfi eld gave a Toast to the Parents, with the reply by par-ents Tina Whitfi eld and Ian McLaren.

Ashley Cumming and Taylor Hand extended the toast to the teachers, with the reply by teacher Mr. Jason Hazlett.

Taylor Hand, Rachel Hyink, and Alyssa Sorensen had put together a power point with pictures of the graduates as

BY JUNE NORVILA they had been growing up.After a short break to stand

and stretch, the procession-al and the formal graduation ceremony followed.

School principal Lane Moore introduced the gradu-ates one-by-one calling them up on stage.

After graduates were seated and Moore had introduced the special guests, he had sixteen quotes of advice for the sixteen graduates. He had assistant principal Stephen Lush help him out in a com-ical way.

Congratulatory messages were given by Bentley Mayor Lynda Haarstad-Petten, Wolf Creek trustee Pam Hansen, and local area MLA Jason Nixon.

Then it was time for the class historians Victoria Pacholko and Billie Ruud to take center stage and talk about memories of each grad-uate.

Class valedictorian and Governor General Award win-ner, Thomas Mueller, then stepped up to the podium to thank people and mention his classmates.

Special guest speaker for the evening was Chelan Sawka from Vancouver, a rel-ative of one of the graduates. She gave a very motivational, inspirational speech to the grads after introducing her-self and explaining how de-

termined she had to be to overcome the challenges and any adversity that had pre-sented itself to her.

“I needed to depend on my-self,” Sawka said. “Education opens doors!”

Who owns the airwaves and whyare scanners legal?

Many people who learn that I’ve worked in the newspaper business for going on 24 years tend to be surprised that I have great respect for privacy.

It’s not easy sometimes doing certain assignments in this business. Years ago I had to write a news story about an 11 year old boy who was killed during a minor hockey practice. I had to phone his parents as they were planning the funeral and, as the editor I

Stu SalkeldPipestone Flyer

It’s good to go back and remember when

It’s been a long time since I partied with a bunch of teenagers who sat around until the wee hours of the morning, talking and laugh-ing and overindulging in al-coholic beverages.

But last Saturday night I did just that.

It is true that the people I sat around with didn’t look much like teenagers. In fact, the graying hair, the bald spots and the expanding midriffs probably strongly suggested otherwise.

But, seriously, I’m here to tell you, that inside each and every one of those aging bodies, there lives a

Treena MielkeOn The Other Side

teenager just waiting to get out.

I have reason to believe those teenagers all got out Saturday night.

It was the night of my husband’s 50th high school reunion.

I went along as ‘the spouse.’

And as the spouse all I had to do was listen and laugh and tag along.

And so I did just that, thoroughly enjoying myself in the process.

It seemed my husband and his friends belonged to an almost, but not quite elite group who didn’t do very much at all except drive around in a little black Volkswagen that ran only sometimes. Someone else in the group also had a car, but it ran even less than the little black Volkswagen and when it did, it burned more oil than gas, apparently.

On the days or nights that the Volkswagen was run-ning, it seemed the boys used it mostly for one thing and one thing only – to pick up girls.

When they found any girls who would actually get in

the vehicle with them they were thrilled beyond com-pare, but, of course, had no idea what to do when this lovely, ponytailed creature was actually sitting beside them.

“We took them out to the cemetery and listened to them scream,” one of the elite group of friends re-called.

As I listened and observed, it seemed to me that these teens were not particularly intellectual or exceptionally athletic.

They just were.“I had 140 credits,” some-

one boasted, “but it took me four years.”

“I should have sold them,” he muttered, pouring him-self another drink.

And so the night slipped away but the ebb and fl ow of chatter and laughter went on and on until the morn-ing yawned and stretched and not quite politely said ‘hello.’

“Remember when you had that little Volkswagen and it would quit and we would all run around and push it and then we would put it into gear and away it

would go,” one guy said to my husband.

“Putt, putt, putt!” The last words were accompanied by hand actions to demon-strate the car actually mov-ing.

“Remember when we cruised around and actually managed to pick up some girls. They were always ready to come with us be-cause we had wheels, but then they treated us like dogs after they got out,” the same guy said.

“I talked to a girl tonight who said I was her fi rst crush,” he said, appearing somewhat amazed at the realization.

And then the teen living inside him decided to come forth and he did the Tarzan thing, beating his chest with his hands.

It was quite cool, actually.“Remember when we

would go to Red Deer for pizza at three in the morn-ing.

Remember when you lived with your sister and your brother-in-law had kept all those editions of ‘Playboys’ from years back in the basement and we got

to look at them.“They are still there,” my

husband replied, and at his words, I half expected the boys, I mean the men, to climb into somebody’s ve-hicle and drive over to the house to check it out.

And as I watched and lis-tened, it seemed the over-crowded room and the noisy seniors slowly faded away, fi nally going back to the future from whence they came.

And in their place were these boys, all fresh and young and eager, teenagers on the edge of life, cruising the streets in a little black Volkswagen looking for cute girls who were, no doubt, looking for them, too.

And on the next street and the one after that and the one after that, life, with all its ups and downs and joys and sorrows, was out there, just waiting to hap-pen.

And, ironically, it did. But, isn’t it good, if only

for one brief moment in time, to go back there once in awhile to the way it was and the way we were.

And to remember when!

worked for at the time put it, “fi nd out how they feel.” Not an easy job. I under-stand and sympathize with people who value their pri-vacy.

When I was working at the Macleod Gazette in 1999 a reader called me and asked if I would help her. She had recently began di-vorce proceedings with her soon-to-be ex-husband, and had been, only a few nights before, discussing the issue with her sister on the phone. All the phones in her house were cordless phones, by the way.

The morning after this conversation the lady was walking out to her vehi-cle when a neighbour who lived a few houses down hailed her and began ask-ing her about her impend-ing divorce. Who was to blame, was infi delity in-volved, who was getting the house and where were the kids going includ-ed some of the questions asked. My reader was un-derstandably shocked. No

one other than her sister and husband knew about the divorce proceedings.

The eavesdropping fellow had a reputation around town as a creep, and it was also known he had spent money to buy some high-end police scanning equip-ment…so high-end the equipment not only picked up police radios, it also picked up nearby cordless phones.

So I decided to do a story about this issue, which re-quired some investigation. I contacted the RCMP and they didn’t know much about someone using scan-ners to eavesdrop on some-one’s private conversation.

I’m a pretty fair detec-tive, so I slowly but surely discovered that (as of 1999) Industry Canada is respon-sible for the airwaves we use everyday to communi-cate, whether it’s cordless phones, cell phones etc.

I spoke with a communi-cations person at Industry Canada and the issue of eavesdropping on cordless

phone conversations was explained. The citizens of Canada own the airwaves which surround us, and that’s why scanners are legal. It’s okay to buy a scanner and use it to listen to the airwaves and any-thing that’s being carried on the airwaves, especially public transmissions like police, fi re and ambulance.

However, it’s been deter-mined in previous court cases that, although the airwaves are fair game, whatever private content you happen to intercept on those airwaves is not fair game; for example, a lady discussing her divorce with a family member, totally unaware that someone in the neighbourhood is eavesdropping. Apparently, this issue came to the fore-front in the 1990s with the emergence of affordable cellular phones and an issue in British Columbia where an elected offi cial was in an inappropriate re-lationship with a journalist, and yet another journalist

was eavesdropping on their lovey-dovey conversations.

An eavesdropper like the Fort Macleod creep may in-tercept the private conver-sation, but he or she can never record or repeat any-thing they hear unless they have the permission of someone who was involved in the conversation. If they ignore that rule, they’re in violation of Criminal Code 184 (1)… “Everyone who, by means of any electro-mag-netic, acoustic, mechanical or other device, willfully in-tercepts a private commu-nication is guilty of an in-dictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fi ve years.”

Whether the Fort Macleod creep got a lecture from the police, I don’t know. But a quality community news-paper is pretty widely read, and I heard through the grapevine the story had an effect on him.

Stu Salkeld is the editor of The Pipestone Flyer and writes a regular column for the paper.

Message board proposed

to town councilA local businessman, interested in selling LED message

boards, made a pitch to town council at its Monday meet-ing.

Melvin Durand, who owns Parkland Automotive Repair Service and is a distributor for Behren Signs and Harvey Gahl from EM Plastics spoke to council about purchasing a message board.

“I was just planting a seed and throwing some water on it,” said Durand. “I would be happy to work with town council in designing one, but of course, it defi nitely needs to go into the budget.”

Durand explained the message boards are a great way to inform and educate people about what is going on in town.

“It can be updated instantly with up-to-the-minute in-formation and it is user friendly,” he said.

“What would be the advantage to the town (if we were to purchase one)? “ Mayor Rick Pankiw asked.

“It would provide up to date information and any event can go up there. Everyone would know immediately what was going on,” said Durand.

Gahl added the signs were durable and could withstand high temperatures of both heat and cold.

Town planner Liz Armitage said she would recommend that council put a policy in place to ensure they had con-trol of what information was put on such a sign if they decided to purchase one.

Costs for the message boards vary depending on spec-ifi cations.

Council accepted the presentation as information.

Town receives provincial grants for water projects

The Town of Rimbey has received fi nancial support from the Province for two major projects.

Town offi cials recently learned a grant of $367,447 is to be received for the purpose of drilling new water wells.

Acting CAO Lori Hillis said the grant would cover approximately cost of 60 per cent of the project. This year phase one will be completed.

“We have a landman

looking for locations in which to drill,” said pub-lic works director Rick Schmidt. “Negotiations are ongoing with landowners.”

He said once a location has been determined an observation well will be drilled and a primary well will be built once all tests have been completed.

Another grant of $418,608 has been received by the town, which will go to-wards improvements to the outfall channel at the wastewater treatment la-goon.

Schmidt said this funding would help cover about 60 per cent of the costs of the project.

The improvements in-volve reconstructing about three kilometers of the channel that carry storm-water and lagoon effl uent.

The preliminary work on this project is to begin in late fall and early winter when the ground is frozen.

The Alberta Government cost-shares eligible proj-ects with smaller urban and rural municipalities to help with the design and

Three of the lots were re-cently rezoned from R3 to R1.

Under the R1 zoning, new detached residences, ready-to-move modular homes, rental suites, granny suites, home offi ces, public parks

and recreation areas are al-lowed.

The other two lots have been zoned R3 which allows for duplexes, triplexes, four-plexes, row housing, mul-tiple unit housing, granny suits, home offi ces and pub-lic parks and recreation uses.

The land surrounding the

subdivision is country resi-dential and institutional and public uses lands, which will house the future Rimoka se-niors’ lodge.

Surrounding property owners will be notifi ed of the subdivision approval and have 14 days to appeal the decision.

“Access to clean drinking water and water-wastewa-ter treatment systems is essential for all Albertans and their quality of life. Government is committed to ensuring Alberta fam-ilies have access to clean drinking water and com-munities have reliable water treatment facilities,” said Brian Mason, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

The Central Alberta Buccaneers defeated Lloydminster Vandals 65-3 and will play in Calgary on July 9. The Buccs are tied for fi rst place in the AFL. Photo submitted

teams hoped to remain undefeated at the fi nal whistle. The Buccaneer offense wasted little time getting roll-

ing; after the initial kickoff, the pirate offense needed only two plays before they found that Vandal endzone. It wouldn’t be the last. “I thought we made a lot of big plays on the offensive side of the ball,” said Buccaneer

Bucs off to Calgary this Saturdaycontinued from page 5 quarterback, Brandon Leyh.”We have a ton of playmak-

ers; it seems like only a matter of time until one of them break one loose.”

While the Buc offense was fi ring on all cylinders, their defense was slow to start. The Vandal offense was able to run the ball deep into Buc territory several times in the fi rst quarter. “Lloyd came out really hard. I think we were taken back by it to be honest. They hit hard throughout

the game,” said Leyh. However, the Vandals early momen-tum was slowed each time and they were limited to a single fi eld goal. The Buccaneer defense rallied for the re-mainder of the game and played with more consistency.

After the fi nal whistle, the Bucs were victorious with a convincing 65-3 win. They are tied for fi rst in the AFL with a 4-0 record (Calgary Gators are 4-0 as well).

Looking forward, the Bucs have a long road ahead of

them before they compete for the AFL championship. While they have had success in the fi rst half of the sea-son, they cannot rest on their laurels. “We need to clean up the little things. Penalties are killing us; we have to be the more disciplined team going forward. We have the pieces but we have a long way to go,” said Leyh.

The Bucs enter a bye week where they can practice, rest, and heal any injuries. Their next game is set on July 9 in Calgary against the Wolfpack.

During the Bucs’ bye week, the team is holding a fund-raiser for their National Championship aspirations. Big Bend Market in Red Deer is donating a portion of all sales that were made on June 25 to the pirate squad. Not only will customers enjoy Big Bend’s gourmet meat, they will be helping the Bucs immensely.

For more details on the Bucs, visit the team’s facebook page, follow their Instagram/twitter @CABucs, and visit www.cabucs.com.

Airport property to be assessed

In a letter to town council, the group of four stated the town would realize a savings of $30,000 in 2016 by having no costs associated with the airport. They would have no liability risks and would reap benefi ts of an increased number of aviation visitors and permanent users.

The airport, if sold to the interested parties, would have the status of ‘registered airport’ with Transport Canada.

“Rather than dwell on shortcomings from past operations, we wish to focus all our ef-forts on building a better and brighter future for the Rimbey Airport. From day, one, this has been a very noble project, and it is our sincere goal (if we purchased the airport) to realize the full potential a well-run and maintained airport will provide to our com-munity,” the letter stated.

The letter also stated Rimbey airport is one of hundreds of airports Transport Canada constructed and owned across Canada. All of these airports with the exception of Churchill airport, were signed over the local jurisdictions, fl ying clubs and various munic-ipalities and associations without fi nancial return to Transport Canada.
