Make Your Spiritual Maturity

Goals and Commitment for 2019

A friend tells his testimony about being a Christian for about 40 years and never really growing in faith or seeing his life change. He regularly attended church and was involved in some church programs. He was comfortable in worship. It wasn’t as if he was a bad guy but his witness might have been lacking for a confessing Christian. This experience mirrors the spiritual journey of many Christians in the church culture of the last two generations.

How would you evaluate your growth in faith? The Bible says "test and examine yourself to see if you are of the faith." Our spiritual measurement must be aligned with God's Word, purpose and priorities. Consider the following examples of spiritual maturity.

* I have a deep desire to spend time in God’s presence. * How I live my life shows that God is my highest priority. * I gather regularly with a group of Christians for mission, community, and accountability. * I regularly reflect on how my life can have an impact for the Kingdom of God. * I am open to going anywhere God calls me to share about Christ. * My relationship with Jesus comes up frequently in conversations with the lost. * I feel personal responsibility to invest in those who are not Christ-followers. * A review of how I use my finances shows that I think more about God and others than I do myself.

Many simply refuse any biblically prescribed disciplines and methods for spiritual growth and maturity. While our spiritual growth isn't a cerebral process alone, the spiritual disciplines do give a base of knowledge of God's Word to know and understand how to daily represent our Lord. We can understand the distinct lifestyle, philosophy, and worldview that Christians are to embrace.

The Christian life without the spiritual disciplines would be like trying to get your driver's license without the driver's license manual. You wouldn't know the laws and safety measures for driving your car. Today’s professing Christians literally know more information and facts about sports' teams, hobbies, and interests than what God tells us in His Word. That is simply wrong!

If you aren’t a continuing seeker for God and His will, something is wrong with what you call or believe is faith. If you aren’t willing to find help from a capable Christian to walk with you, there’s something wrong with your desire. If you haven’t had a Spirit touch from God in a long time, your faith is either dead or deeply dwarfed. You must grow and you must position yourself for growth.

God expects us to grow in our love and knowledge of Him. God expects that we serve Him out of our passion and giftedness of ministry. God expects us to not only prepare but then be involved in current practices of ministry to bring Him glory, to bring you blessing, and to grow you to maturity.

What are your spiritual maturity growth goals in 2019? Will you position yourself for growing in grace and faith? Will you commit to walking with a teacher, trainer, or mentor? Will you commit to learning a knowledge of His word, learning how to walk in the Spirit, and receiving wisdom from above? Our church is growing in the number of mature Christians who will walk with you and graciously show and teach you.

God is asking each of you to make a commitment to God to grow toward spiritual maturity this year. God is asking you to make this a priority by spending time each day growing in the spiritual disciplines. God is asking you to find a meaningful place of ministry service to grow incarnationally and missionally to be more like our Lord. After all, these are a sign that you’re saved and useful to the Master. I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing your story in 2019! Steve Boyd

Spiritual Growth Assessment Surveys The Lifeway assessment surveys helps you think carefully about your spiritual development related to six spiritual disciplines:

Abiding in Christ, living in the Word, praying in faith, fellowshipping with Believers, witnessing to the world, and ministering to Others. Once you complete the survey you can ask three friends to complete a spiritual growth observation sheet for you.

The survey also has helps to create an annual spiritual growth plan! Surveys are located in the foyer of the FLC.

Contact Angie in the church office if you need multiple copies for your Sunday School class.

6:15pm A counterfeit god is anything so central and essential to your life that, should you lose it, your life would hardly feel mean-ingful. The human heart takes good things like a successful career, love, material possessions, even family, and turns them into ultimate things. Truly, the human heart is an idol factory. The trouble with exposing idols is that we realize that most of our idols really are good things that we’ve allowed to take on undue importance. Come join this discussion and discover your counterfeit gods and how to replace them. This is a 7-week class facilitated by John Allen.

Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief Training

When disaster strikes, some of the first to respond with help are Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers.

Kentucky has an active disaster relief program that works in concert with

similar programs in other states. Whether the disaster occurs in

Kentucky or elsewhere in the nation or the world, Kentucky volunteers may be

called out to help.

More than 4,500 individuals are trained as Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief

workers. Volunteers can staff feeding units designed to deliver thousands of

hot meals on short notice; move in with chainsaws to help remove debris;

do the dirty work of helping families remove mud from flooded homes; and

provide many other disaster relief services.

Register for DR training at http://www.kybaptist.org/dr/

Training will be held at First Baptist Church Mt. Washington

on Saturday, January 12.

You might have noticed….. That the bathrooms in the office wing have been repainted. We are very grateful to Dale Carlson for not only providing the paint but also the time to repaint them. Please take the time to thank him for his gift to your church campus!

Our Décor Team outdid themselves this year putting up Christmas decorations to make our campus feel homey. They have a varied job description that includes creating seasonal displays, decorating tables for events and adding touches to repainted bathrooms! Our team members are Lisa Davis, Patti Tocci, Judy Ayers, and Joanne Hirby.

Did You Know? Our Evangelism team created our first Worship Service Prayer Teams. The teams meet in groups of three and pray during our Worship Services. Our Deacons are also praying with the pastor giving the message before worship. If you would like to be part of the Worship Prayer team, please contact Andy McDonald at 648-4291. Lovin’on Lou is an outreach ministry which I started in August 2018. It all started with the idea of helping people in our own community. There are many mission trips that I have been on, but one thing that continued to stay on my heart is the fact that there are many people in our own community who need our help.

After discussing this need with my mom and some family friends we decided that we wanted to start this ministry together.

For our first trip downtown we wanted to start small. We made 10 food bags and passed them out quickly and then realized how large this ministry could become! After several trips to Louisville we decided to focus on the homeless lined up on the side of the road under an overpass on the corner of South and Preston.

Each month we collect different items and the recipients are always very grateful. We are very thankful to those who have donated to Lovin’ on Lou and enabled the ministry to grow. Each month we have been able to help an increasing number of people.

Follow our Facebook page Lovin’ on Lou to see which items are needed each month. We have an ongoing need for baby wipes, lotion, Chapstick and food items such as bottled water and individu-ally wrapped crackers and chips. Thank you in advance for your help! Hebrews 13:14 Bailey Sowder

Making Resolutions Stick Before you dispose of your Christmas cards, write the name of each person who sent you a card on the calendar-one person each week. During that week of the year commit to praying for that person and maybe even send them a card letting them you are praying for them. You will increase your time with God and deepen your friendships!

As Believers we are to be the light in a dark world. And at Christmas, opportunities abound

for serving and sharing our faith in our community.

Holiday Report We had multiple people prepare and provide

desserts for our Hispanic Thanksgiving community fellowship.

Provided 27 Thanksgiving meals to our homebound families.

Provided Thanksgiving meal tickets to ten guest families.

Linda Otterback led a team which included Mary Wyatt, Sharon Hamilton, Liz McHenry, Stephanie, Aidan, & Gabe Perkins, Tony Sanford, Larry & Connie Curry (and other friends & family members) to The Hope Place in Louisville to provide a Christmas party to 45 children of Muslim parents who were participating in a Christmas Tea. The Gospel was presented to the women at the party and 10 ladies expressed an interest in further Bible Study.

We provided 27 free tickets for new guests to attend the Brad Stine Christmas event. Our Truth4Life Sunday School is providing a Christmas meal and personal gifts for 54+ residents at

Colonial Hall. We helped 159 families shop for 459 children at our annual Toy Store. Twenty four of these families

have requested more info about the church and would like to receive the monthly newsletter.

We are very grateful to those that volunteered their time and gifts to our ministries this year!

Evangelism Team Update But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Act 1:8

Did you know that one year ago the newly formed SBC Evangelism Team began to meet? The mandate of this team was simple; “Support our pastoral staff as they lead the church in an Acts 1:8 strategy of equipping SBC members to reach the world with the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ.” The team was birthed out of Bro. Steve’s vision for a group dedicated to helping create a culture of evangelism that permeates every aspect of SBC life. We have approached our work in two ways;

Equip members in evangelistic praying, training, and personal witnessing.

Plan church-wide evangelistic efforts such as Harvest Sunday, evangelistic outreach events, and event follow-up.

Motivated by Christ and making Him known, Pastor Steve and your Evangelism Team, are setting the following grace-filled goals for 2019

Baptize at least 30 people.

Challenge every SBC member to pray every day for at least one lost person by name to be saved.

Encourage every SBC member to have at least one Gospel conversation a month.

Train at least 15% of SBC members in a Gospel sharing tool.

Please join us in praying, that by God’s grace our church will do its part to advance the Gospel in Simpsonville/Shelby County, Kentucky, the United States and the ends of the earth. Here are your Evangelism Team members: John Allen, Steve Boyd, Leslie McDaniel, Andy McDonald, Rachel Miller, Matt Moore, Byron Thompson, Digna Veletanga. Andy McDonald

We have placed copies of “evangelism excuses” in the foyer of the FLC. Be ready with Scripture the next time you hear one!

Recently SMART (Security Medical And Response Team) gave a presentation in worship on how to

respond to an active shooter situation in the church. It is critical that all members know what to

do in a crisis of this type.

If an active shooter enters the church during worship, an individual on the stage and the pastor, will shout “SHOOTER!”

When this happens all individuals should lean to the right and get as low as possible. DO NOT get on the floor since the Security Team will need to act accordingly and you may bump the chair in front of you.

Security personnel are always placed strategically throughout the congregation and will respond immediately to eliminate the threat. Members on the right side of the aisles will bend forward instead of to their right.

Any member who is currently holding a carry conceal weapon will also lean to the right.

DO NOT use your weapon because it will interfere with our trained security team.

If the shooter is already in the chair aisles, and starts shooting, then the protocol will still be lean to the right. An exception would be if the shooter is close to you and you can tackle him or restrain him while the security team acts. This is your call and only if you feel comfortable doing so.

DO NOT jump up and run to your children! Our Security Team has a plan in place for their safety.

Statistically, the active shooter will be an individual who knows a member of the church. It may be a domestic issue involving an argument, violence, divorce, child custody, or a relationship gone bad. If this is the case and you feel it is possible that someone may do bodily harm to you, then please notify the pastor or the Security Team leader, Mike Waterman. Security will watch for the individual and only the pastor and the Security Team Leader will know the specifics of the case.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE ABOVE REQUESTS TO SAFELY PROTECT GOD’S PEOPLE AND PROPERTY.

What is the Christian’s Standard of Giving?

Before sharing excerpts from the second half of Billy Gra-ham’s 1961 article on the Christian’s ‘Standard of Giving’, I’m reminded of two notable quotes. The first one states, ‘When God blesses you abundantly, it is not to increase your standard of living, but to increase your standard of giving’. The second one is from C. S. Lewis. He said, ‘I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare.’ Now let’s hear from Dr. Graham…

“Many Christians write to me, asking, ‘What is the Chris-tian’s standard of giving?’ Many people give by impulse or on the spur of the moment. They have no systematic way of giving their money to the work of the Lord… There are those who give as if they were doing God a big favor. Some give only when times are good and their bank account is running over. Then a little of the overflow is scraped off and given to God. The Scripture teaches that we are stewards for a little while of ALL we earn. If we misuse it, as did the man who buried his talent, it brings upon us the severest judgment of God. The tithe is clearly taught in the Old Testament, and Jesus said to the scribes and Pharisees regarding the tithe, ‘…these [justice, mercy and faith] you ought to have done, without leaving the others [tithing] undone’. The tithe is the Lord’s. If you use it for your-self, you are robbing God (Malachi 3: 8). The New Testament goes beyond the Old Testament and teaches that we are to give as God has prospered us. We are to take the tithe as a standard, but to go beyond the tithe as an indication of our grateful-ness for God’s gifts to us.

One of the worst sins that we can commit is that of ingratitude. In the midst of sorrow and trouble, this life has many bless-ings and enjoyments that have come from the hand of God. Life itself, preservation from the dangers to which life is at every instant exposed, every bit of health that we enjoy, every hour of liberty and free enjoyment, the ability to see, to hear, to speak, to think and to imagine – ALL this comes from the hand of God. Even our capacity for love is a gift from God. We show our gratitude by giving back to Him a part of that which He has given to us. The Bible teaches that great blessing follows those who give liberally. Proverbs 11: 25 says, ‘The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered him-self.’ The Apostle Paul said concerning this matter of giving, ‘But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully’ (2 Corinthians 9: 6). The Scriptures also have much to say about the motive in giving. Paul said, ‘Let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver’ (2 Corinthians 9: 7) ... The greatest blessing of giving is not on the financial side of the ledger but on the spiritual side. You receive a sense of being honest with God. You receive a consciousness that you are in partnership with God – that you are doing something constructive – that you are working with Him to reach the world for Jesus Christ. You are also enabled to hold on to this world’s goods loosely, because the eternal values are always in view. Your readiness to give to the work of Christ is a solid witness to your love for Christ. If we are not willing to deny ourselves money, which is a part of ourselves, how can we be so bold as to say that we have surrendered our ALL to Christ? So, how do you give? Is it liberally and cheerfully? Or is it sparingly and grudgingly? If you have been giving God the leftovers of your belongings and your life, you have been missing the true joy and blessing of Christian giving and living… Most of ALL, Christ wants you, and when He has you, He will have your wallet, your bank account, your stocks and bonds … He wants your total personality – ALL your talents, time and possessions belong to Him. You are a steward, and you owe to God everything that you have. I am asking you today to give Him your heart and ALL that you have. Surrender to Him and ask Him what He would have you to do.” Reprinted (in part) from the 1961 BGEA’s article, ‘Are You Robbing God’ by Billy Graham Lowell Ashby MPIT Chairman
