Long lay the world in sin and error pining, ‘til He appeared
and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, the weary world
rejoices; for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
The Thrill of Hope: Anticipating the Light of Christ
It’s easy to skip Advent when the green and
red decorations come out November 1st and
the Christmas carols are already playing on
the radio. But for the church, these weeks
before Christmas are an important time of
watching, waiting, and anticipation. For all
the bright Christmas lights, Advent reminds
us of lingering darkness and still shortening
days. Without Christ, the world still lies in
darkness and doubt.
That’s when we need a thrill of hope, a time
to rejoice in spite of weariness, and behold
the breaking dawn of God’s loving presence.
Special Advent Services December 19, 7 PM—Longest Night Service in the Sanctuary
December 22, 8:30 AM—Lessons & Carols in the Sanctuary
December 22, 11 AM—Bluegrass Christmas in the Sanctuary (Connection & 11:00 combined)
Christmas Eve Services 5 PM—Family Service with Candles & Communion in the Sanctuary
7 PM—Traditional Service with Candles & Communion in the Sanctuary
We invite you to join us during this Advent
season of hope and anticipation: come sing
the songs of the season, retell the stories,
gather with friends and church family for
meals, service, worship, and celebration.
This is also a wonderful time of year to
invite friends and neighbors to join you for
Highland services and events. The delightful
music and family-friendly functions make it
easy to invite folks and a wonderful way to
introduce them to the Highland family of
faith.
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!!

Ridge Rider MONTHLY NEWS AND MINISTRIES OF HIGHLAND UMC - DECEMBER 2019
Advent Adventure Join us Wednesday nights for dinner at 5:45 PM in Bradley Hall prepared by our chef Paul Swartz and stay after dinner for beloved “adventures” of the Advent season
December 4: Care and Share Breakfast (After Dark)
It’s breakfast for supper as we mark the return of a
Highland tradition--just a little later in the day. In addition
to a great meal, we will be putting together gift baskets for
Highland’s homebound members. Please bring fruit and
goodies to add to gift baskets for our shut-ins.
We will also need helpers to deliver the gift baskets!
Would you and your family would be willing to spend an
hour spreading the joy of the season to a shut-in?
December 11: Craft Night!
Who doesn’t love a good Christmas craft? On December
11 we will pack the bags for Backpack Buddies and then
spend the evening crafting together. Something fun for all
ages!
December 18: Come As You Are Nativity
Our Come As You Are Nativity is a community re-telling
of the Christmas Story. Everyone gets a part and no
rehearsals are required. It is easy and fun! We will gather
in the sanctuary after our Wednesday meal (about 6:30).
Participants will be given a choice of what part they would
like to play in the story: angel, shepherd, wiseman, donkey,
sheep, cow. We’ll make sure everyone knows their part
and place, then tell the story together. Our Children’s
Choirs will also be singing for this year’s Come As You
Are. Bring your friends and neighbors as we celebrate the
birth of God’s son--who invites all of us to come as we are.
Advent Adventure Meal Deal
If you and your family don’t typically participate in our
Wednesday evening fellowship meal this is the perfect
season to give it a try. Imagine three weeks of Wednesdays
when you don’t have to figure out what you are making for
supper! In honor of the season, we are offering a special
Advent Adventure Meal Deal. Families can purchase a
meal pass for the three weeks of Advent at a reduced rate.
Passes are available at highlandumc.org/wednesday-nights.
Pride for Parents Help make Christmas a celebration for working families across Wake County
We are collecting new and nearly new toys and
children’s clothing for the Pride For Parents Christmas
Stores. Pride for parents is an annual toy and gift sale
designed to benefit hard working families at Christmas.
Through donations of new and gently used toys and gifts
we offer quality affordable merchandise to families in
Wake County. We will sell - not give - toys and gifts to
families who can afford to pay a small price.
This program first began at FCS Ministries in Atlanta and
is simple in concept: to instill dignity rather than
dependency. Parents are blessed with the gift of giving
to their children. The children are blessed with Christmas
gifts that actually come from their parents.
You are invited to pick out toys/clothing of your choice
and then leave your unwrapped gift in the bin in the
Narthex or in Bradley Hall by December 8. You can also
volunteer to help at one of 6 Pride for Parents locations.
To volunteer, sign-up on their website: pfpwake.org.
Epiphany Celebration All children and their parents are invited to join us during
the Sunday School hour on Sunday, January 5, for a special
Epiphany celebration with food, fun, stars, & stories. Please
plan to join us!
Make a Joyful Noise! Children’s Choirs Sing in Worship During Advent
The Chorister and Cherub Choirs will usher in the Advent season
at Highland as they sing in worship December 1 at the Connection
and 11:00 Service. They will sing our introit, play Orff
instruments, and partner with the Highland Choir for the anthem.
What a blessing our children are in worship; don't miss this chance
to hear them sing! Children’s choirs will also sing a set of
Christmas anthems as part of the Come As You Are Nativity on
December 18. We are grateful for the presence of several Highland
Children’s Center singers performing alongside Highland
members.
Moravian Love Feast We'll gather for one worship service on Sunday, December 29, at
11:00 in the Sanctuary to continue our celebration of the Christmas
season with our rendition of a traditional Moravian Love Feast.
This service of lessons and carols includes special refreshments,
lots of holiday music, and opportunities to share how we have seen
God at work in our lives. (No children or youth Sunday School
classes on December 29.)
The Longest Night A Service of Light in the Midst of Darkness
Thursday, December 19, 7 PM
Christmas can be a bittersweet time of year. The
Longest Night is a service for all, especially those who
have experienced loss or find the holidays a difficult time
of year. It is a service to express sadness and concern,
to realize that we are not alone, to remember those in
need, and to experience the healing presence of God as
we await the coming of Christ. Join us to hear scripture,
offer prayers for wholeness, receive Holy Communion,
and hear songs that acknowledge God’s comfort for
those who mourn, grieve, and struggle. All are welcome.
Advent Wreath Workshop Everyone is invited to join us in Bradley Hall on Sunday,
December 1, at 5 PM for our annual soup and sides pot-luck supper
and Advent wreath workshop. We will have craft activities for
younger children to make while individuals and families can make
an Advent wreath to use at home. Candles, wreath forms and other
supplies will be provided. If you have a form from a previous year
please bring it with you! A $5 donation will help to defray the cost
of candles and wreath forms.
Advent Devotionals Pick up this year’s Advent devotional Let the Heavens Be Glad,
inspired by the writings of Henri Nouwen, or for families with
younger children Wonders of His Love by Amy Welborn. These
devotionals are free (one per family) in the Narthex or in Bradley
Hall on Sunday mornings.
Hanging of the Greens Help decorate the church for the holiday season on
Saturday, November 30, at 9 AM in the Sanctuary
and in Bradley Hall. Coffee and cinnamon rolls will be
served to all who help!
Reception Help Needed
We will enjoy a time of fellowship in the narthex on Sunday,
December 22, before the combined 11 AM worship service, our
annual Bluegrass Christmas service. We need cookies, sausage
balls, cheese cubes with crackers, fruit, and other goodies. You
may sign-up by emailing Jo Anne Swartz
([email protected]). Bring your food donations to the
narthex the morning of December 22 by 10 AM. Thank you for
making our entry hall "fair as you are able, trimming the hearth and
setting the table" for this fellowship event during Advent.
Poinsettias To purchase a poinsettia in memory or honor of a special person
and have it placed in the sanctuary during Advent, fill out an order
form from the Narthex at Highland and submit it to the church
office with payment ($10/plant); checks should be made payable to
Highland United Methodist Church, "poinsettia" in the memo. If
you prefer, make your order online at highlandumc.org/advent/
#poinsettias. Deadline for ordering is Sunday, December 8.
Poinsettias will be available for collection after the Christmas Eve
services.

The Highland Choir will echo Mary's song of joy as they present Johann
Pachelbel's Magnificat on Sunday, December 8, at the 11 AM Service.
The choir will be accompanied by NC Symphony members Emily
Glover, Janine Wynton, Petra Berenyi, and Nathaniel Yaffe, as well as
Highland's own Marcia Nance (organist) and Dennis McLain (double
bass). The string players will join forces with harpsichordist Phyllis
Vogel to play movements from Harpsichord Concerto in D by J.S. Bach
during the prelude and offertory. Invite a friend to join you at Highland
on December 8 for this celebration of Christ's coming.
The HUMRingers, Highland's handbell choir, will share music in
worship on December 15 at the 11 AM service. Our handbell choir
brings an extra measure of beauty and joy when they play in worship.
The HUMRingers are also playing at the State Capitol on December 6
for a community Service of Remembrance and are sharing Christmas
pieces and carols at the NC Women's Correctional Institute on
Wednesday evening, December 11.
Much joyful anticipation marks our annual Bluegrass Christmas service,
December 22 at 11 AM in the sanctuary - a combined service
(Connection & 11:00) preceded by a time of fellowship in the narthex at
10:30.
On Christmas Eve, we look forward a group of youth singers and
guitarists bringing music at the 5 PM Christmas Eve Family Service, and
our Highland Choir will present special anthems at the 7 PM Christmas
Eve service. After Christmas, the Highland Winds will play carols and
special music at our annual Moravian Love Feast on Sunday, December
29, at 11 AM in the sanctuary.
Music of the Season
Highland Women’s Retreat
One of the Ten Commandments is to “Remember the Sabbath, and keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8), but how well do we practice Sabbath? We are often torn between various commitments; and the idea of Sabbath, while it seems nice, feels impossible.
Join us for a time away in the woods to discover healthy ways to practice Sabbath in our lives. Pastor Amanda Bunce and Amy Takahashi will lead our weekend retreat at Mount Shepherd Retreat Center in Asheboro, NC, with special guest speaker Rev. Claire Clyburn. Claire is the pastor of First UMC Graham, NC, and has served in ministry for over 30 years. She is passionate about Bible study, Sabbath keeping, and music.
This event is open to women of all ages. The cottage is handicapped accessible. There are hiking trails, great mountain views, campfires, and even a climbing wall (for those so inclined). We will convene on Friday evening, and end with worship on Sunday morning. The cost is $150/person, which includes meals for the weekend. Sign up at highlandumc.org/womensretreat.

Finance Update
As you can see in the summarized financial report, as of
October 31st, we have a General Fund deficit of more
than $126,000. The only somewhat good news in this is
that we are better off than we were at the same time
last year. But in 2018, even though we had strong giving
from late November through December, we still finished
the year more than $35,000 in the red.
We want to thank all those who have given so faithfully
and generously this year, and who continue to do so, as
well as those who continue to fulfill their commitments
to the capital campaign that is funding our building
project.
But we all need to be aware that current trends indicate
we could be facing a $45,000 (or higher) operating deficit
at 12/31/19. In addition, the current amount pledge for
2020 is down almost 16% compared to where we were in
pledges submitted last year. Without significant
increases in revenues, we are likely facing some serious
and painful reductions in general expenses for 2020. We
simply cannot sustain such large deficits year after year.
Please continue to keep our congregation and its
leadership in your prayers and in your year-end giving
plans as you are able. If you have any questions about
this report, please feel free to contact Jim Duke in the
business office ([email protected], 919-787-4240
ext. 108) or Finance Chair Ruth Moore
