A brunch will be hosted at Barbara French’s house on Saturday, December 28 from 10 AM to noon during which Santa will officially trim his beard following the Christmas season. • Pam Larson introduced our student-of-the-month, George McBurney, who is the son of Club member Patrick McBurney. George went to the podium and said a few words. He went to Richland High School as a Freshman, went on to Hanford High School and is now a Running Start student. He is very keenly interested in business, economics and accounting. As he prepares to go to college, his parents are vying for him to go to their respective Alma Maters. He enjoys attending the Thursday night Gaming Club at Columbia Basin College. George was given a Student-of-the-Month certificate plus a Paul Harris Rotary coin.

50/50Today was an extremely unique 50/50 run by Tim Lewis - there was only a single chip in the bucket! Patrick McBurney won the whopping $318 pot - and successfully collected it - after challenging the dubious announcement of a previously unknown (perhaps previously nonexistent?) rule regarding the ineligibility a person to win 50/50 if that person was the father of the student-of-the-month. Phil Lemley walked away with $10.

Judge Jim BauerThe Honorable Jim Bauer Ho-Ho-Ho-ed his way to the podium and began the Judiciary session by offering some Get-Out-Of-Jail-Free cards for $50 apiece. These cards are good for 6-months avoidance of any ‘fines’ assessed on you by the Judiciary Committee. Patrick McBurney wisely purchased one immediately.

Anniversaries and Birthdays were announced. Judy Addis has a birthday, Tim Lewis has his 42nd wedding anniversary yesterday. Fred is celebrating - in advance, no less - the Navy’s forthcoming win in this weekend’s 120th football battle between Army and Navy. Pam Larsen is celebrating her 66th birthday. Cynthia was happy to announce her 5-year Rotary Anniversary. Tom donated for the lack of his badge (Tom – you are welcome to make a donation to Rotary even if you do start bringing your badge to the meetings).

We moved onto brags. Linda Bauer bragged about Cynthia’s Opera-on-the-Vine Event and encouraged folks to go on Sunday (at Emerald of Siam from 4-6 PM, tickets are $15, <https://www.operaonthevine.org/events>. Chris Meiers announced a Celtic Christmas concert that will be held at the Hanford High auditorium on December 13 ($30/ticket – proceeds go to the WSU Tri-Cities Entrepreneurial Assistance Fund). Judy bragged on a win by the Kansas Jayhawks. A Clarinet Christmas event – all skill levels welcome - is scheduled for Sunday, December 15 from noon to 2 PM. Please contact Cynthia for more information.

Julie bragged on her students in Grand View and their success with Shakespeare and their upcoming undertaking of Willy Wonka. Julie’s father is 81-years-old and she is following in her father’s footsteps to become a CTE teacher.

Mark made a donation to the Crimson Tide due to Alabama’s recent loss to LSU. Ken put in $5 for The Seahawks after watching the whole brutal spectacle that he had recently recorded. Diahann Howard bragged on her son who is celebrating his 23rd birthday and the fact that he is now running an airport and a rail-line (his favorite part is that he has his own Humvee!). Bob Tibbatts put in for the Cheez-it bowl.

We moved on to a Christmas quiz that ranged everywhere from Dr. Suess (The Grinch made his debut in 1957) to Saint Nicholas giving out presents starting in 285 AD to Gene Autrey singing Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Program – Jeanne Dillner, Trip to CubaToday we heard from Jeanne Dillner who shared with us photographs and stories from her visit to the enchanting island of Cuba this past summer. While there she experienced a fantastic culture and met wonderful people. She was also reminded of her dedication to the fundamental Humanitarian thought that all lives have equal value. The practicality of this thought was striking to her thirty years ago when Jeanne was with the IAEA and met a woman that was very interested in buying significant amounts of medicine in the commissary for her family back home, medicines that included things that we in the United States take for granted, like Tylenol. The present-day, continued importance of this thought was brought back to mind again in Cuba. More on that later.

Due to current US laws, US citizens can fly, but cannot take a boat, to Cuba. Delta Airlines made the necessary arrangements for Jeanne and her friends to obtain the necessary travel visa. They stayed in a very comfortable guest-house in Cuba, known as a pension, and hired a driver and a car. Car enthusiasts know that Cuba is something of a museum for well-maintained, old American cars. However, the country also has a number of Ladas, an old Russian car. Ownership of a Lada by a family normally indicates that at some point, some member of their family worked in the higher levels of the government. New Toyota engines for the old cars come out of Panama. Cars are registered with the tourism bureau. Jeanne advised us against asking for one of the convertibles. As appealing as they are, it’s too hot in Cuba to really enjoy it in the summer. Get one with an air conditioner. For those who cannot afford a car, horses and donkey-pulled carts provide transportation. Jeanne took a horse ride, a short one, and then transitioned to taking a hike instead.

She had the opportunity to visit Hemingway’s house. However, as a US citizen she couldn’t go on government tours, only private tours. The private tour only allowed access to the outside of the house. She saw his boat, Pilar. Hemingway’s time on Pilar was part of the inspiration for his book The Old Man and the Sea.

In Havana she saw old and new buildings. Regardless of how Che Guevera is seen – hero or not – his image was everywhere in Cuba much like it was when she visited Tanzania. When the Soviets were reducing their financial support for the island, the stopped sending pesticides and fertilizers to the island. Only naturally occurring fertilizers (e.g., bat guano collected from caves) are used in Cuban farmland. Cubans are true organic farmers.

Jeanne’s travelling companions in Cuba included her friend Margie and Margie’s husband. Margie’s husband uses a dialysis machine and didn’t have any problems while traveling in Cuba until the end of the trip when he started running a 102° fever. As luck would have it, the group didn’t have any Tylenol to reduce the fever and efforts to obtain some on the island weren’t successful despite calling all over the place to get it. Margie’s husband recovered without it but it serve as a reminder

that 30 years after Jeanne’s experience with Tylenol at the IAEA, the same situation still exists in Cuba. This served as a reminder of the continued need for the works of Rotary.

Hal’s HumorA musical director was having a lot of trouble with one drummer. He talked and talked with the drummer, but his performance simply didn’t improve.

Finally, before the whole orchestra, he said, “When a musician just can’t handle his instrument, and doesn’t improve when given help, they take away the instrument, give him two sticks and make him a drummer.”

A stage whisper was heard from the percussion section. “And if he can’t handle even that they take away one of his sticks and make him a conductor,”

Next weekAt our next meeting, the last one of 2019, we will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of our Club’s Charter.
