RICHARD ROGERS + ARCHITECTS
Centre Pompidou, Paris
2007
Brief: Design the exhibition
Richard Rogers + Architect s, exploring 45
years of architectural projects through models,
photography, drawings, films and digital
animations.
The exhibitions design is inspired by the idea of
a city, divided into 8 zones. Each zone, in turn, contains a series of conceptual blocks - models,
films, drawings and documents - that place
projects into context.
The works on view are displayed on cantilevered
steel tables topped by impossibly thin planes
in vibrant colours, the raw strength of the base
contrasting with the fragility of the surface. No
acrylic cases were used, creating an intimate
connection between the visitor and the content.
The exhibition is open plan, allowing free
circulation throughout, with a piazza in the centreof the show that allows the visitor to sit, r elax,
read, learn and play.

We worked with Mike Fairbrass from the RSHP
model shop to develop a radical new animated
model that illustrates the master pl anning of
Shanghai. Acrylic roads, parks and buildings are
brought to life through rear projections built into
the plinth, transforming the model into a legible,
working urban system.
To make the show as accessible as p ossible, we
commissioned a series of films by Marina Wilner,
Hijack and Guiseppe Bartolini to decode the ideas
behind the work. Wilner illustrates Richardsconcept of legibility in her film Exposed, using a
series of cutaway images of familiar objects to show
the hidden structures inside.
A series of life-size architectural elements and
prototypes - nodes, beams, and roofing systems -
were placed throughout the space like sculptures
to give visitors a sense of their true craftsmanship,
scale and power.
The initial exhibition attracted 150,000 visitors,
making it the most successful architectural show
the Centre Pompidou has ever had. Following thissuccess, the exhibition toured internationally
through 2011.
