Dear Lester:
It was kind and t hough tful of you to write re f r om Atlantic City while you were attending the Elk's Convention. My heart attack prevented me fro~ go i ng th e r e and I was very disappointed.
I made my first visit to the Grand Lodge Convention in 1918 -- that was during the war and I attended t~ree consecutive Conventions in that City and a number of them in the ye ars that fo llowed. I still think it is the be st City in the United States, outside o f San Fra~cisc o, for any kind of Convention.
I had a complete report of the proceedings from Brian McKeogh who is ve r y active and on t he staff c~ th e ~ational organization, and he told me a~out the fight on the attempt o f the management of the rul es t o permit t~e election of other than white people as members of the Order.
I suppose that will corne up at every Conve ntion, ~ut I noticed the decision of the Supreme Court which showed that the Elk's Order and other Fraternal organizations wou ld not be hurt by their failure to admit anyone other than white people to their membership.

I note what you had to say about the Conventio~ i~ Mia~i
and = agree with your observatio~s. It was one of t he worse Democratic Conventions I ever saw and it cannot help but have a detriDental e f fect on the Party's s~ccess in N::::-;eT2iDer.
I ho~e that yo~ and your wife are enjo y ing goee ~ealth and that one of these days our paths will cross.
