the 36th Vice President (1953 to 1961)

The only person to be elected twice to both the

Presidency and the Vice Presidency.

A member of the Republican Party, he was the

only President to resign the office.

Parents: A. Nixon and Hannah Milhous Nixon (the Quakers)4 brothers: Harold (1909–1933), Donald

(1914–1987), Arthur (1918–1925), and Ed (born 1930).

Four of the five Nixon boys were named after early English kings

Richard was named after Richard the Lionheart

attended Fullerton High School in Fullertonlater he transferred to Whittier High School,

where he graduated second in his class in 1930.

Richard was offered a scholarship to Harvardtook up a scholarship to Whittier College,a

He voted against price controls and other monetary controls, benefits for illegal immigrants, and public power

1969–1973Nixon set out to reconstruct the Western

Alliance, developed a relationship with China, pursued arms control agreements with the Soviet Union, activated a peace process in the Middle East, restrained inflation, implemented anti-crime measures, accelerated desegregation, and reformed welfare. The most immediate task, however, was the Vietnam War.

U.S. space program

Nixon visits the Apollo 11 astronauts in quarantine aboard USS Hornet.

On November 14, 1969, he became the first incumbent president to attend a rocket launch, Apollo 12. Nixon's signature is included on the plaque left by the Apollo 11 astronauts on the Moon in 1969.

On January 2, 1974, Nixon signed a bill that lowered the maximum U.S. speed limit to 55 miles per hour (88.5 km/h) to conserve gasoline during the crisis.
