On behalf of the staff and Governors at Richard Lander, I wish you all a very happy New Year! The new term has started in earnest with Year 11 sitting a range of GCSE examinations, including English and Maths, in the first week back after the Christmas break. Over the next few weeks, Year 11 will sit a range of other GCSE module exams which count directly towards their final GCSE grades. If parents are unsure of the specific exams their children are sitting, please do contact Mrs Bache at school, who will issue a timetable to you. (Timetables have previously been issued but we do realise some of these will get mislaid.) Please also refer to the school website, where a generic timetable for the January GCSE exams can be found. The link to this is on the Notices section of the Homepage. Please could parents of Year 11 students also ensure that their children are now doing on average, about 2 hours’ homework / revision per night. This is such a busy term, with lots of GCSE module exams and controlled assignments being done in school, quite apart from all the revision which supports this at home. The best preparation for GCSE exams is a revision programme which starts at the beginning of the spring term, rather than waiting for the Easter holidays to begin. Can I also remind all parents that our homework is set via an online facility. There is a link to this on the Headline Features section of the school’s website, again on the Homepage. So if you want to know what homework each member of staff has set for your children on a weekly basis, please take a look. It will help you support your children and take a hands-on approach to helping them at home. Many thanks for your continued support. I look forward to another successful term as we begin 2013 refreshed and eager for continued success and achievement. Kind regards, Steve Mulcahy Headteacher

RICHARD LANDER SCHOOL WEEKLY BULLETIN : 11th January 2013 2

O n Friday 23rd November 2012, a workshop took place at Truro School, as part of the collaborative schools project involving three year 8 students,

Chloe Hall, Connie Downing and Liam Kristoffy, with the theme of the weather and included Richard Lander School, the Roseland Community College, Penair, Truro School and Pencallenick School.

The talented artist Hannah Woodman, who was having an exhibition of her work at the Truro School Heseltine Art Gallery was leading the workshop and the students were given a personal tour of her work, which for the most part dealt with the Cornish weather and this proved to be very instructive and inspiring. Following this the students all involved themselves with the business of producing paintings of the weather using acrylic paint under Hannah’s guidance. The end results were very exciting art of a high standard as the example of Connie Downing’s painting shown here proves. All of this work and more of the group of schools can be seen at the Lander Gallery, Lemon Street Market, Truro from Friday 29th February 2013. Mr S. Dove - Art Teacher

T he best pieces of Design Technology work from the second half of the Autumn term have been selected and added to the Hall of Fame. These can now be found on the school website by following the School Features link on the home page. The DT Hall of Fame consists of the best pieces of student work from

both Key Stages 3 & 4 – nominated by the student’s DT teachers on a half-termly basis. The work selected can be anything – from initial design ideas to finished projects in all areas of the subject. Entries are showcased here on the website and on the large display screens around school. Students entered into the ‘Hall of Fame’ receive merits and the chance to be awarded a trophy if their work demonstrates excellence in a particular area. Here are 4 of the 13 chosen this

time, the others can be seen on the school website. Well done to all the students chosen. Mr N Everitt

RICHARD LANDER SCHOOL WEEKLY BULLETIN : 11th January 2013 3

O n the last week of the autumn term (over two days) the entire Year 8 cohort were treated to a full day of Design Technology workshops where they each had the opportunity to experience three different material areas of the subject working together in unison to produce a final, professionally made product. Over the course of the day’s activities students worked in Food technology to cook a small batch of cookies - and had the opportunity to customise the flavourings. They then went to a Resistant Materials workshop and made a plastic vacuum-formed tray which again had personalised elements on the bottom. Finally the students spent time in the graphics room where they used the laser cutter to produce a cardboard wrap and professional design software to create a personalised, themed label. In the afternoon the students spent time assembling their products, taste testing and evaluating their work. This activity provided a valuable insight into the wide and varied nature of the subject and was

perhaps the only time in secondary education where they will have the opportunity to work across Food, Resistant Materials and Graphics to produce a single product. As well as this, it introduces important concepts such as ‘batch production’ and ‘quality control’ for the first time - which are key areas of understanding for the yr9 and Key stage 4 curriculum. The activity was led by the entire DT teaching team – each working in their specialist areas across 5 workshops.

RICHARD LANDER SCHOOL WEEKLY BULLETIN : 11th January 2013 4

We are proud to announce that our

own Mr Pascoe, in collaboration with

Professor Anthony Pilching, has

composed a Requiem which will be

performed in Truro Cathedral on

Saturday 23rd March 2013.

The concept of this piece is unique

and ground-breaking as it takes the

genre of the Requiem, perhaps

exclusively the preserve of the

Church, and makes it secular: there is

a real dearth of music written from an

atheist viewpoint or even from the

perspective of those who are less

certain of their beliefs. This work is a

f r e s h mu s i ca l app roach t o

contemporary responses to loss, and is

structured loosely around the key

phases of grief, through a mix of

poems that do not require specific

faith, though they do not exclude it

either.

Mr Pascoe and Professor Pilching will

present a Seminar on the Requiem in

advance of its premiere performance

on Saturday 26th January - 9 am - 1

pm in the Truro School Chapel. Russell

and Tony will describe how their

inspired creat ive partnersh ip

developed over the months they spent

teasing out exactly what they wanted

to express and how the work was to

be shaped. Their journey was

fascinating and led to a conclusion the

audience will find moving, surprising

and ultimately uplifting. This informal

seminar will also include a question-

and-answer session, together with

some of the contralto and baritone

solos performed by Adele Berntzen

and Nick Beever, and you will be

invited to sing an extract or two from

the choral sections of the work. Paul

Comeau wi l l prov ide p iano

accompaniment (the Requiem is

actually scored for an orchestra of

over 60 players).

The tickets are prices at £12 (under

18 half price) to include music, coffee

and cake.

Please use the flier below if you are

interested in attending the seminar.

Tickets for the performance can be

bought from the Hall for Cornwall.

School uniform – We have a smart and distinctive uniform which makes a positive contribution to the school’s image. It is to be worn by all students. Parents are asked to fully support the school on this policy. Tops - Please note that the only tops which may be worn by students on school premises, including the playgrounds, are either the burgundy zip fronted top or the black microfleece with the school name on it. These tops are compulsory and every student

is expected to wear one. Other types of sweatshirts and hoodies are not to be worn either on the school premises or to and from school. All students should have a suitable, waterproof coat which they can wear to and from school and on school visits. Once a student has entered the school building in the morning he/she should place this outdoor item of clothing in his/her locker until the end of the day.

If a student needs an extra layer

of clothing then a burgundy Tee-

shirt may be worn under the school

polo shirt. No other colour Tee-shirt

should be worn.

Safeguarding Children at Richard Lander School Richard Lander School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and vo l un teer s to s hare th i s commitment. This means that we have a Child Protection and Safeguarding Pol i cy, and procedures in place which we refer to in our prospectus. All staff, including supply staff, volunteers and governors, must ensure that they are aware of

these procedures. Parents and carers are welcome to read the Policy which is on the school website. Sometimes we may need to share informat ion and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about our children are discussed with his/her parents/carers first unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child’s welfare. The designated staff in school for

Child Protection and Safeguarding concerns are Mrs J Nicholls and Mr P Gilbert.

Mr C Vaughan and Mr S Mulcahy can also be contacted if Mrs Nicholls or Mr Gilbert are
