The Hellenic Circle has the honour to invite you to the conference "The Western Question in Greece and Turkey : Arnold Toynbee and the Koraes Chair'" By Richard Clogg, distinguished Professor of History, Emeritus Fellow of St Antony's College, Oxford On Monday, 6 June 2011 , at 7 pm Salle J. Capart, Woluwe-Saint-Pierre Conference Centre (Avenue Charles Thielemans 93, 1150 Brussels) Shortly after his designation as the first holder of the Koraes Chair in the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at King’s College, Arnold J. Toynbee, the well-known British historian, travelled to Greece and Asia Minor in 1921. Upon his return, he published (1922) the book “The Western Question in Greece and Turkey: A Study in the Contact of Civilisations”, a book that caused a lot of reaction, leading to Toynbee’s resignation in 1924 from the Koraes Chair. Mr Panayotis Partsos, diplomat and translator of Toynbee’s book in Greek, will discuss the book and its continuing influence.
