FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Glenn Reedus, (708) 613-7187 Cook County Commissioner Richard R. Boykin Forms Exploratory Committee to Consider Race for United States Senate Chicago, IL- "Every powerful interest you can think of- from the corridors of Washington, to the most elite corporate boardrooms in Chicago- seems to have an opinion on who should be our next United States Senator. But they forget that the only opinions that really matter are the opinions of the people of the State of Illinois. So far, no one seems to have bothered to ask them what they think. But I will." With those words, Cook County Commissioner Richard R. Boykin announced the formation of an exploratory committee to consider seeking the Illinois Democratic nomination for United States Senate. The announcement- accompanied by a "Letter to the People of Illinois" posted on Boykin's website, as well as a YouTube video- will be immediately followed by a Listening Tour that will take Boykin to different corners of the state to listen to the concerns of Illinoisians first hand. "What we have seen so far in the very early stages of this race is a lot finger-pointing and a lot of chatter from the declared candidates, mostly about each other," Boykin stated. "But what we are not hearing much about is the concerns of everyday Illinoisians." "At its root, good government begins with a willingness to listen and to meet people where they live," Boykin continued. "Leaders must work with the people they represent to propose answers to the most pressing questions confronting the people of our state. How can we expand opportunity? How can we rebuild broken communities? How can we bring jobs to poor neighborhoods with unemployment rates approaching levels of the Great Depression? How can we reduce and eventually eliminate the gun violence that plagues our city streets? These are the defining issues of our time. Anyone who seeks to represent Illinois in the United States Senate must first engage Illnoisians in a great conversation on how to best tackle these challenges. I look forward to that conversation." Boykin also unveiled the members of his Exploratory Committee, consisting of elected, business, faith and community leaders. For a complete list of members, see attached.
