RICHARD 1 BLAKE was born at Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut on 7 Oct. 1747, the son of Joseph Blake and Rebeckah Higby. 1 He married DAMARIS SMEDLEY (born 4 Feb. 1747 at Litchfield, Litchfield, Connecticut, daughter of Ephraim Smedley and Concurrance Hurd 2 ) on 6 July 1769 3 . Richard died 17 Sep 1807 in Livonia, Livingston, New York 4 and was buried in Union Cemetery, Livonia, Livingston, New York. 5 Damaris died 3 May 1828 in Livonia, and is also buried in Union cemetery. 6 Our Folks says of Richard's family: "The Adjt.-Gen. of Conn. certifies:--"Richard Blake, of Litchfield, was a member of the 4th Company, Captain David Welch, in the lst Regt., Colonel David Wooster. The regiment was raised on the first call for troops by the legistlature in April-May, 1775. It marched by request of the Continental Congress to New York in June, and was encamped at Harlem. About Sept. 28th, under orders from Congress, it marched to the Northern Department (Gen. Schuyler's) and took part in the operations along Lakes George and Champlain; assisted in the reduction of St. John in October, and afterwards at Montreal. Men were mustered out in Oct.-Nov" In 1798 his son Jesse articled Lot 41 in the town of Pittstown, Ontario Co., N.Y. (now Livonia, Livingston Co.) and came through from Conn. with ox teams. The date when Richard Blake and the rest of the family came cannot be fixed exactly, but between 1800 and 1805 Richard Blake and all his family were there. At the time they came to Livonia, Robert Morris, the great financier of the Revolution, had just concluded the sale of this portion of the Mass. Grant (which had been thrown up by Phelps & Gorham) to the Holland Land Co. The Indian title had just been ceded at a council at Genesseo, 20 miles away, which was headed by the noted Indian orator and chief, Red Jacket. They must have been among the first to

Note, February 2009: This is began as a descendant report created by my PAF program. It was partially edited and footnoted, but never finished. It appears that the last fewfootnotes have disappeared. I am posting it, flaws and all so that it might assist othersresearching these families.

RICHARD1 BLAKE was born at Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut on 7 Oct. 1747, theson of Joseph Blake and Rebeckah Higby.1 He married DAMARIS SMEDLEY (born 4 Feb. 1747at Litchfield, Litchfield, Connecticut, daughter of Ephraim Smedley and Concurrance Hurd2) on 6July 17693. Richard died 17 Sep 1807 in Livonia, Livingston, New York4 and was buried in UnionCemetery, Livonia, Livingston, New York.5 Damaris died 3 May 1828 in Livonia, and is alsoburied in Union cemetery.6

Our Folks says of Richard's family: "The Adjt.-Gen. of Conn. certifies:--"Richard Blake, ofLitchfield, was a member of the 4th Company, Captain David Welch, in the lst Regt., Colonel DavidWooster. The regiment was raised on the first call for troops by the legistlature in April-May, 1775.It marched by request of the Continental Congress to New York in June, and was encamped atHarlem. In 1798 his son Jesse articled Lot 41 in the town of Pittstown, Ontario Co., N.Y. (nowLivonia, Livingston Co.) and came through from Conn. with ox teams. The date when RichardBlake and the rest of the family came cannot be fixed exactly, but between 1800 and 1805 RichardBlake and all his family were there.

settle there. They all acquired extensive farms there, and a more beautiful location it would be hardto imagine. The Blake farms lie on an oval or flattend "turtle back" of a hill, midway between LakesHemlock and Conesus. (The city of Rochester, N.Y. now gets its water from Hemlock.) Both lakesare in sight, and the soil is strong and fertile. Here Richard Blake and his wife lie in the Livoniacemetery." 7

Children of RICHARD BLAKE and DAMARIS SMEDLEY were as follows:

1. JAMES BLAKE was born 6 Oct 1769 in Litchfield, Litchfield, Connecticut8; died 17 Nov1817 in Litchfield, Litchfield, Connecticut9. He married on 1 Apr 1793 in Litchfield DORCASBUEL 10 who died some time after 11 Aug 1817.11 James remained in Connecticut when most ofthe family moved to New York and some of his descendents were living there as late as 1983.James' will reads, " In thename of God, Amen.

I James Blake of Cornwall in the County of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, do make my lastWill and Testament in manner following, to wit,

First, my Will is that all my just Debts and funeral charges be first paid out of my estate, in suchmanner as my Exceutors shall judge best.

Second, I will and bequeath to my beloved Wife Dorcas in additon to what the law will give herin my real as well as personal estate, which my Will lis should be set out ot her i the same manneras if this Will had not bee made, the use and imkprovement of that parcel of land which I owncommonly called the Judd Lot, containing about sixty acres, during the time she shall continue myWidow.

Third: I give and bequeathe to my Children now living, vigt: Polly, Albert, James, Orrin, Julius,Flora, Buell and Catharine and such other heirs of my body lawfully begotten or to be begotten therest & residue of my estate both real and personal, to be equally divided between them, share andshare alike, excepting to my said Daughter Polly, from whose share the sum of two hundred andthirty Dollars & seventy five cents, is to be deducted, she having already received said sum towardsher share in my estate.

Lastly, I constitute and appoint my aforesaid Wife & my friend Mr. ? of Warren, Executors ofthis my last Will and Testament. In testimony whereof I have herunto set my hand & seal this 11th

"History of LivingstonCounty"53 says he came to Livonia, then known as Pittstown in 1800, after applying for land in1798. This is confirmed by the 1855 New York State Census which shows that Jesse had been inLivonia for 55 years.54 He married (2) abt. 1837 LOIS ___, born 1783 in CONNECTICUT55. Jesse's will and many pages of affidavits are found in Livingston County Will Book 4, pg. 536-549.One of the affidavits mentions that Jesse had a 2nd wife. She apparently died before this will wasmade.

EUNICE BLAKE, born 1823 in , LIVINGSTON, NEW YORK; died 30 Jan 1897 in BENTON,EATON, MICHIGAN; buried in MOUNT EVERGREEN CEMETERY, JACKSON, MICHIGAN.She married in 1831 in WOODBURY, LITCHFIELD, CONNECTICUT, DANIEL AUGUSTUSHAWLEY , born 18 Dec 1813 in WOODBURY, LITCHFIELD, CONNECTICUT; died 2 Oct 1847in JACKSON, JACKSON, MICHIGAN; buried in MOUNT EVERGREEN CEMETERY,JACKSON, MICHIGAN, son of DANIEL HAWLEY and CONCURRENCE BLAKE. BIRTH:IGI. CONFLICT: The 1855 NY State Census shows her as age 35, making her born about 1820. The1860 Census shows her age as 42, making her born about 1818! LAND: In her father's will, Eunice(Hawley) is given a parcel of land in Livonia on which she now resides (1859). CENSUS: The 1855NY State Census, Livonia, Livingston, lst Election District, family #169, shows Eunice as a widow,age 35, born Livingston, land owner, with two children born in Michigan. MARRIAGE: IGI.
