ThispastJanuary,weconvenedgroupsofteachers,administrators,faculty, and Winthrop students to discuss various strands ofteacher preparation curriculum. Named the “Education CoreCouncil,”thesub-groupsexaminedcurrentcoursework,discussedfieldexperiences, andexplored the challenges teachers face intoday’s classrooms. Below are highlights from those groupdiscussionsthatshowcasetheworkofthePartnershiptoimprovepreparation.Thenotesalsosuggestnextstepsinourever-evolvingsharedresponsibilitytomeettheneedsofallstudents!

Congratulations to Dr. Audrey Allan ofWinthropUniversity on being named the 2016 South Carolina State Physical Education Association Advocate award winner.Dr. Allan was recognizedinNovemberforcreatingYorkSchoolDistrictOne’sPE curriculum that has been showcasedall overthe United States, fromHawaiitotheCarolinas.In fact, Winthrop sendsPE student interns everyfall semester to YSD1 to observethebestpracticesfrom the model PEcurriculum that Dr. Allandesigned. Her effortshave also provided theYSD1 PE teachers with

grantmoney, iPads, newPE equipment, plans, color brochures, andconference/professionald e v e l o p m e n topportunities.Dr.AllanhasputYSD1onthe map as being regarded as one of thestrongest district PEprograms in the state of South Carolina as well as across the country. Shewas also the reason why the South Carolina PE Association recognizedour YSD1 PE program as one of the BEST in South Carolina in 2012 and2016.ThankyouDr.Allanfor impacting all of thestudentsandPEteachersinYSD1.

Winthrop receives $3 million grant from U.S. Department of Education

This fall, Winthrop’s RichardW. RileyCollegeof Education receiveda grantfromtheU.S.DepartmentofEducationtospecificallyfocusonEnglishlanguageacquisition.Thegrant,totallingaround$3million,willprovideapproximately$555,000inyearlyfundingoveraspanoffiveyears.For the NExT LEVEL grant (NETwork for LeadingEducationthatValuesEnglishLearners),Winthropwill partnerwithLancaster County School District, York School District 3, and York SchoolDistrict 4. The Winthrop University-School Partnership Network will provide professional learningopportunities for teachers,administrators,parents,andfacultytomeettheneedsofEnglishLearners.AccordingtoLisaJohnson,co-principalinvestigator ofthe grant anddirector ofWinthrop’s Jimand Sue RexInstitute forE d u c a t i o n a lRenewal andPartnerships, thegrant’sgoalis to providehigh quality education for every student. “SouthCarolina as a state has seen a 150 percent average increase in English learners,” Lisa said. “This increase is

occurring so fast that institutionsandschools struggle with preparation tomeet the unique needs of secondlanguage learners and their families.

Wereceivedfeedbackfromourpartnerschools that this is a significant needand an area in which teachers areaskingforsupport.”

Kelly Costner, co-p r i n c i p a l investigatorofthegrant andcoordinator ofmiddle leveleducation, andElkeSchneider,co-author of NExT LEVEL, agree that teachers needsupport in

addressing the needs of EnglishLearners and accessing content andresourcestoteachthesestudents.Overfive years,NExT LEVELwill fund

graduatecourseworkforteacherswhowanttopursuecertificationinteachingELs,provideprofessionaldevelopment,allow teacher candidates to takeadvanced coursework focusing onteaching ELs, and help districtsimplement a nine-week parent institute.“We’re appreciative of the supportthatwehave receivedwhilepursuingthisgrant,andwehavebenefitedfrom

Dual enrollment at WinthropUniversity provides an opportunityfor academically strong secondarystudents to take college coursesfor either credit at the high schooland college level or to start buildingcollegecreditforuseuponenteringapose-secondaryinstitution.Toqualify,astudentmustbeacurrent/rising high school junior or senior, have a 3.0 GPA on the SC UniformGradingScale,andhavereceiveda22ontheACTora1050ontheSAT.Coursesareavailableoncampusandonlineandareofferedatvarioustimes

during the fall and spring semesters.AlldualenrollmentcoursesaretaughtbyWinthrop’shighlyqualifiedfaculty.Therearemanybenefitsforstudentswhoenrollindualenrollmentcourses.StudentswillhaveaccesstoWinthropUniversity resources, such as tutoring, the library, and the wellness center.Students will become academicallyprepared for college before enteringfull-time, gain experience andconfidence to succeed in highereducation settings, and have amoreproductive high school experience.Plus, studentswill take advantageof

significantcostsavingsforcollegeandearntransferablecollegecredits.TheapplicationdeadlineforFall2017courses is April 14, 2017. Welcome back Foster Hays, our NExT LEVEL Research and Technology Specialist

Having worked within theWinthrop University-SchoolPartnership Network as a research assistant for the NetSCOPE grant, Foster Hays is now returning to the partnershipasResearchandTechnology Specialist for the NExT LEVEL grant. Fosterstudied philosophy at

Georgia Southern University before moving to Alabama toearnherMAinAmericanStudies at theUniversity ofAlabama and attendseminary at Beeson Divinity SchoolatSamfordUniversity.After completing herschoolwork, she relocatedto South Carolina along with her husband, Phillip Hays,the Access Services Coordinator at Winthrop’sDacus Library. Foster hasbeen with WinthropUniversity since 2011, not only as a member of the NetSCOPE team, but also as anadjunctinstructorforthe

Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies andUniversity College. Inaddition to her love forlearning, teaching, andcontributinginanywaythatshecantotheadvancementof education, Foster is alsopassionate about her role as amother.Sherecentlyhadanew addition to the family,withherthree-year-oldTom“Bug” becoming a bigbrother last May to Finlay“Pie.”Now Foster is happy to get back to the Partnership Networkandbeginherworkwith NExT LEVEL. She is

Global Goals: teacher candidates travel abroad to China during full-time internship

Thisspring(March20-May1), two senior teachercandidates have theincredible opportunity totravel abroad to Shanghai,China to complete their Internship II experiences.Cassidy Laber and AmandaSabin will be teaching at Shanghai Far East School, an InternationalK-12 school inasuburbofShanghai.Helping them prepare for their journey are WinthropfacultymembersDr.MarleahBouchard,Dr.CrystalGlover,andDr.MarkDewalt,whoiscurrently spending a yearliving and teaching at the

school.Living in European-style apartmentslocatedneartheschool, the students willexperience Chinese culture and their new schoolcommunitytothefullest.“Iamstokedaboutmeetingmy students and beingcompletelyimmersedintoanew culture!” Cassidy said.“I am excited to try newthings and experienceeducation from a differentperspective.While in Shanghai, bothstudentsandfacultywillbechallenged to expand their

views of teaching andexperiment with new strategies and methods,such as teaching English as a second language, thatworkfor their Chinese studentsand even students inAmericanclassrooms.“I hope to gain moreknowledge about workingwith ELs for my future classroom. The number ofnon-English speaking studentsisrising,andIwantto be prepared to teachthem and support theiracademic needs,” Amandasaid. “I am so intrigued byhow diverse and similar

education is in differentcultures.”On top of venturing into a new teaching environment, studentswill also live in anentirely new culture andcountry. Some of theexcursions planned includetrips to Beijing to explore The Great Wall and TheForbiddenCity.“I hope to gain a love forChinese culture, learn more as a teacher andgrow, andgain a new perspective oneducation,”Cassidysaid.

Matt Rohring, Gold Hill’s partnership liaison and lead teacher, provided his interns with the opportunity to attend a conference about the innovator’s mindset sponsored by South Carolina’s ASCD (Association for Supervision

and Curriculum Development). Guest speaker George Couros shared insight and inspiration.

“Theworlddoesn’t carewhat youknow; it cares aboutwhat you dowithwhatyouknow.Areweaskingstudentstojustrepeatinformationor are we asking them to dosomething with that informationthat’srelevanttotheworldthatwelivein?Learningisaprocess,notaproduct, so with 22 differentstudents,Ishouldhave22differentprojectseverytime.”

More than 200 Teacher Cadets participate in the Winthrop Experience

Graduating Teacher Candidates excel at the COE Career Fair

In February, over 200 high school studentsvisitedWinthrop’scampusaspart of the Teacher Cadet program,whichwasstartedinthe1980sbynoneother than Jim Rex and is currentlysponsored by CERRA (the Center forEducatorRecruitment,Retention,andAdvancement).Tostarttheday,teachercadetshadtheuniqueopportunitytoattendavirtualreality seminar through the ITC, a new addition to this year’s itinerary. Aftertinkering with robots, students couldstop by Tillman to have officialWinthropIDsmadeandvisitanexpoofdifferent Winthrop clubs andorganizations in the RichardsonBallroom.Toformallykickofftheday,

cadets gathered together with theirpeers from schools in surroundingareas and listened to Winthrop’sadmissionsprogramsharewhatmakesWinthrop great and how to apply. Aquick icebreakergamesetanexcitedtonefortheday.The cadets then filed into historicTillman Auditorium for an engagingtalkwithapanelofWinthropTeachingFellows about the realities of collegelife and how the teacher educationprogramworksfordifferentdisciplinesand grade levels. As in past years,topicssteeredtowardhowtobalanceschoolworkandfun,andanswerswereas diverse as Winthrop’s studentpopulation. Next on the agenda,

students attended informationalclasses from a variety of educationaldisciplinesdependingontheirinterestsand intended majors. Classes werefollowed by campus tours thatconcluded with lunch in ThomsonCafeteriaandtimetoexplorecampus.This year, Teacher Cadet day, again,servedasagreatwaytogetWinthropfaculty and students connected withhigh school students in theareawhoare eager to experience college for a dayandpondertheirfutures.

Spring semester is undoubtedlyabusyoneforgraduating teachercandidates. In addition tocompleting their edTPAportfolios and teaching fulltime, Internship II studentshad the opportunity toattendacareerfairespeciallyfor education majors inFebruary.Morethan50schooldistrictsfrom around the stateattendedtheevent,whichiscoordinated each yearthroughtheOfficeofCareerand Civic Engagement.Participating districts camein search of well-qualifiedteacher candidates to fillpositions for the next

academicyear.Teachercandidatespreparedresumes and portfolios topresent to prospectiveemployers and participatedin preliminary interviews.Through this experience, teacher candidates putinterviewing skills andprofessional presentationinto practice. Many walkedaway with potential joboffers and lastingprofessional connectionsweremade.In Winthrop’s TeacherEducation Program,administrators, and facultymembers pride themselveson preparing teacher candidates for every aspect

of the teaching profession, which is why the annual career fair has become such acorepartof theprogram.Because of these kinds ofexperience-based programrequirements, studentsgraduate from Richard W.Riley College of Educationwith confidence in theirability to join the profession with ease. Many studentsalready have jobs lined upwhen they walk across the stage in May, and that isoften many thanks to theCareer Fair and theprofessional connectionsthey have formed throughtheir field placements andfull-timeinternships.

“The education career faircelebrates the culminationofeverythingourgraduatingteacher candidates haveworked so hard forthroughout their degreeprograms,” Carolyn Grant, DirectorofFieldandClinicalExperiences, said. “Ourcandidates trulydemonstrate how wellequipped they are for theteaching profession through their professional andengaging interactions withdistrictrepresentatives.”

Mr. McQuiston’s after-school pottery club, funded by a grant from the Rock Hill Schools Foundation called “ B u i l d i n g C o m m u n i t y , Confidence, and Control through Clay”, challenges students to be creative and experiment with clay using five new portable wheels.
