    Executive summary

The objective of the project is to study and understand the end to end functioning and

the process involved in the integrated reporting Portal (IRP) 360.

Telecom giant Bharti Airtel is the flagship company of Bharti Enterprises. The brand

Airtel comes from Bharti Airtel Limited, Indias largest integrated and the first private

telecom services provider with a footprint in all the 23 telecom circles. All the

backhand IT solutions for Airtel are provided by IBM on the basis of its requirements.

Bharti requires IBM to design, develop and operate a reporting Portal viz IRP 360

(An intranet portal for Airtel and IBM) for MIS, reports that would cater to the

information needs (pertaining to day to day operations) of management team of Bharti

Airtel across different BUs mobility, Telemedia and AES. On the other hand the

responsibility of IBM is to provide technical direction and control of IBM project

personnel and to provide a framework for the project planning, communication and

reporting. IBM will also manage any sub-contractors who might be part of this

    project.

IRP 360 is one of the major IT initiatives taken by Bharti to do away with its

problems being faced while communicating with its IT solution team IBM by

providing a successful intranet solution through this portal.

Now the question is, what made Bharti to come up with such portal?

For that a detailed analysis of the business requirements put forth by Bharti to IBM

were collected and simultaneously the responsibilities of IBM and Bharti as well were

gathered and studied. The hierarchy that exists in the process involved was figured out

as in which level of designation was responsibility for which task responsibility and

role in the functioning system of IRP 360.

Earlier in the absence of any such portal, the reports were sent through other means

    possible:

    y Net meetings

    y E-Mails

y Uploaded on a server, then fetched through a link/URL

    y Even physically at times

But there were lots of drawbacks to this type of means of communication.

y Most important one was the security issues which led to risks of information

being leaked or getting into wrong hands. Server use to get overloaded which

    results in breakdown.

y Another drawback was that the rights were restricted on a server.

y The space was limited to a capacity in Megabytes only.

y But for a successful business its important that each and every representative

and the employee involved in the project at that time must be in a position to

access these reports at any point of time.

Thus the need for a portal aroused.

    Post IRP 360:

Lot of issues that earlier existed in the company with respect to the communication

problem got solved through meetings, mails etc.

But with the introduction of IRP360 a lot of benefits were achieved:

y The portal has a huge capacity in Gigabytes, and is easily accessible and far

    cheaper.

y The reports are updated on a daily basis as against the time-lag problem that

uses to exist in the system.

The various sources from where the data is fetched are:

    y BI

    y Arbor

And finally the data reports get published for a free access to all the team members

    involved.

The published report is the summarized report because a dump report is not of any

importance to the employees at executive level. So a more focus is emphasized

towards IRP and the summarized reports that are published on it. Therefore only the

summarized report gets published on IRP.

y People at executive and CEO level are more concerned about the summarized

report instead of a dump one.

y The dump reports are huge in size which in turn makes theserver loaded.

y Also a dump report requires being refreshed daily which is difficult.

Thus IRP 360 publishes only summarized reports.

The print screen of the home page of IRP360 shows how it is login and the reports are

    accessed internally.

The IRP 360 is an application meant for catering to the Bharti Airtels Management

requirement for reporting and analyzing various key reports and KPIs for its various

Lines of Businesses. The application aims to provide single information view across

the organization to present consistent information to all in Bharti Airtel i.e. one

version of truth. The application aims to provide secured access to the data

pertaining to Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of the business, that are sourced

(from multiple sources, which are both internal and external to the organization),

massaged (applying the relevant business rules), stored, and reported in an user

friendly manner to the management executives.

This shows how the reports are published and are readily accessible to the airtel

    members.

    Objectives of the study

The objective of the project undertaken is to study and analyze how the requirements

of Bharti Airtel are decided and justified to be given to IBM.

And how in return IBM gives Bharti solutions to the requirements set by them.

Business analysis was conducted for detailing of functionalities, reports, business

rules etc. Also the IBM responsibilities and role are studied.

Along with these roles the reports that are required by Bharti Airtel are analyzed that

helped me understand their needs in line with the business decisions that are required

to be taken for the proper functioning of the telecom industry.

Got the first hand information about how the processes go about for the proper

functioning of this portal. How an IT innovation proved beneficial toBharti in terms

of ease and cost effectiveness as well.

Overall the objective of going through a learning curve was achieved.

    Concepts Introduced in the Study

    Data warehouse

Data warehouse is a repository of an organization's electronically stored data. Data

warehouses are designed to facilitate reporting and analysis. This definition of the

data warehouse focuses on data storage. However, the means to retrieve and analyze

data, to extract, transform and load data, and to manage the data dictionary are also

considered essential components of a data warehousing system. Many references to

data warehousing use this broader context. Thus, an expanded definition for data

warehousing includes business intelligence tools, tools to extract, transform, and load

data into the repository, and tools to manage and retrieve metadata.

    Data Reports

Each and every functional department collects the data through these data reports and

sends it further after processing across the other related departments.

There are two kinds of data reports that circulate in Bharti Airtel:

    y A dump report

    y A summarized report

A dump report is not of any importance to the employees at executive level. So a

more focus is emphasized towards IRP and the summarized reports that are published

    on it.

y Then only the summarized report that is published on IRP.

y People at executive and CEO level are more concerned about the summarized

report instead of a dump one.

y The dump reports are huge in size which in turn makes the server loaded.

y Also a dump report requires being refreshed daily which is difficult.

y Thus IRP 360 publishes only summarized reports.

Requirement) and how they are delivered by IBM through this portal. The entire

process and the functioning of the cycle was studied from the business requirements

given by Bharti till the stage where in turn IBM gives them back to the Bharti as per

    their requirement.

    Findings of the Study

    System architecture

This shows the schematic framework of the high level architecture. Information

gathered from the telemedia through its reporting tool is entered into the database

tables along with the data from various other sources, for instance:

CRM, Db2B1, Arbor and Files that forms the source systems also forms a means of

sending data into the database tables that forms the extraction and staging portion of

    the diagram.

MOLAP is the traditional mode in OLAP analysis i.e. Multidimensional Online

Analytical processing mode. In MOLAP data is stored in form of multidimensional

cubes and not in relational databases. The advantages of this mode is that it provides

Framework for analysis of available reports

This phase could provide framework to do analysis like trending and comparison.

This phase is called as the introduction phase. Here the available reports are

introduced to the business users. Using the Online tools, we extract the data from the

excel sheets to the local database, which will be reflected to the front end, available

for drill down and slice & dice.

    1. Postpaid sales performance across the top 27 towns

It is important to keep a track of the salesmen in fields. Are they performing

their tasks, as in working for the Airtel or not? Incentives, sales targets are to

be given to them to continuously monitor their performance and job, to know

if any kind of enforcement, incentives or training is required.

For Ex: Salesman are given a combination of fixed and a variable pay,

wherein fixed pay is the 40% and the rest 60% is based upon the targets given

to them as in according to their performance .So if not continuously monitored

they start working for various companies at the same time for that fixed pay

only. Or they even end up cheating the customers giving them connections

with schemes that do not even exist related to their bills.

    2. Target Vs Achievement figure

Salesman are given targets to fulfill, for instance they are given a specified

time frame within which they are suppose to sell a given number of

connections and get customers. And this number of activations determines

their performance and salary as well. Thus it becomes important to monitor

that what percentage of the targets have been achieved as in the success and

the failure rate is determined and displayed. This can further help in deciding

the hiring and firing of the employees.

    3. Channel payout

The channel payout refers to the payout of different channels. Considering

parameters such as hub name, circle name, zone name the total channel

commission payout is evaluated and record is kept and monitored. Payout

from various channels such as from postpaid, prepaid, cancelled connections,

commissions paid, all the expenses are taken care of in this.

    4. Promotion of the month

A new scheme or a plan is launched and is promoted. The sales performance is

evaluated and monitored for the plan launched. The channel from which

maximum contribution obtained to the gross profit is then estimated. It could

successfully target which category of customers, in what time duration etc.

    5. Transaction Report- Modern Trade

This report deals in describing all kinds of business transactions that takes

place on the part of the system. For instance: the recharge done, post-paid bill

payments, transaction amount, customer cell no. etc.

    6. Overall Business report for Modern Trade

This is also a daily released report like the former one but along with

transactions it also keeps an account of activations, cancellations, accounts

status, along with recharge, post-paid payments etc.

    7. MT distribution strength

This report is maintained to keep a record of the number of modern trade

outlets that exists across various existing hubs, circles, and zones. This will

help keeping awareness about the various outlets that might be fake or

    registered illegally.

This maintains a record of the sales performance of the handsets across

various hubs, circles and zones. This helps in analyzing which handsets sells

the most, which are performing poor, and among which Age/Income group.

    9. Distribution network selling handsets

It provides the information about the distribution network selling the handsets

across various hubs, zones and circles. This helps analyze the percentage

penetration of a specific handset, through a specific channel performing the

most/least across which hub, zone, or circle.

    10. PCO sales activation report

This gives an account of the sales activation, the performance of the PCO

installed separately (manned and unmanned). Which ones performing better?

The gross revenue earned from them and the sale variance in comparison to

    the previous month.

    11. PCO decrement report

This report will provide the information regarding the number of PCO outlets

that have decreased or closed down in comparison to the previous period of

consideration. The data would be collected and analyzed across all possible

categories of PCO outlets including the manned, unmanned, PCO box etc.

revenue earned from the PCO business(across all categories).Due to adecrease in the number of PCO outlets as against the previous period of

consideration( can be done on a daily, weekly, or on monthly basis) the

effected profits/loses can be brought forward in this report.

    13. Distributors Total business

To know about the revenues earned and the number of deactivations of the

PCO outlets it is important to keep a track of the closing balance of the various

distributors and the outlet owners across all hub and categories as well.

    14. Prepaid Activation

This report will provide insight on the gross activation of the prepaid

connections done both in rural as well as in the urban area. Keeping in view

the previous months/days data etc. the variation in the sales can be estimated.

    15. Top 10 Retailers across the Zone

    Conclusion/Summary

The widespread adoption of mobile telephony remained Unparalleled in scope to

other segments of the Indian telecom Sector, driven by the ever increasing population

of users who choose personal mobility.

The end to end study of the functioning of IRP360 and the analysis done based upon

interviewing various departments heads. The conclusion drawn is that the IT

innovation brought about by Bharti Airtel has proved to be successful and beneficial

for both the vendor (IBM) and the user (Bharti Airtel).

This can be seen from the information provided that the same process when done

manually had lots of difficulties and disadvantages attached to it. This doesnt exist

    anymore.

Also the reports that were published on the portal were studied and it could be

concluded from them how the fluctuations due to any minor change in the system or

the innovation terrifically change the profits and schemes launched by a Telemedia

    service company.

    Recommendations

As seen from the information till now a new portal for the organization has been

introduced in the system. But interviewing heads of various other departments shows

that the employees lacked the complete knowledge about the usage of the software.

For the success of an organization its crucial for the employees to be aware about thesystem and its proper functioning.
