HANDLOOM

When a l l the th r eePRIMARY motions (i.e.Shedding, picking and

beat up) of the loom inweaving process arecarried out using hands& feet only ( without theuse of any other power

sources like mechanicalo r e l e c t r i c a l ) t h eequipment is known asH A N D L O O M .

WEAVING

Weaving is a process of interlacement of two

or more set of threads at right angle.

Warp (³end´): Set of vertical threads run onloom.

Weft (³pick´/³filling´):

Set of horizontalyarns interlacing with

warp threads.

PREPARATION FOR WEAVING

Preparation of Warp Beam: Dyed yarn in hank form is being wrapped

on to a convenient packages ( bobbins) and such packages are being

mounted on a creel according to the warp design and repeat. Threads

from all these bobbins are first drawn through eyelets on stationery

frame ,then through a hand held guide frame it is being wrapped on to avertical warping frame, which is rotated by hand, by the operator. Such

wrapped portion forms a section of the ultimate full warp which is being

wrapped on the warp beam.

Preparation of Weft Package (Pirn Winding): The different colored weft

threads that are required are being wrapped on pirns and kept ready by

the side of the weaver in a basket, ready to be picked up and used as

and when necessary. These pirns are fitted into a shuttle, which is

propelled from end to end during weaving, releasing the weft yarn to

form a pick .If the fabric being woven is of narrow width, the weft package

is moved from end to end to insert weft by hand .

PRIMARY MOTIONS OF WEAVING

Shedding : This is the process of separation

of warp threads into two portions (up & down).

Picking : This is the process of insertion of

weft threads from one side of the loom to the

other.Beat up :This is the process of forcefully

beating the newly laid pick into the already

woven fabric.

SECONDARY MOTIONSBasically there are two secondar y motions:

Let off motion : This is the process which ensuresrelease of the warp threads from the warp beam for

insertion of weft.

Take up motion: This is the process with which the

cloth woven pick by pick (woof by woof) is being

wrapped around on to a cloth beam, usually at the

bottom portion of the loom.

LET OFF MOTION

Pulling lever through chordwill unlock the ratchet wheel

connected with warp beam

which will allow the warp

beam to rotate freely to

release the warp threads.

SIZE MEASUREMENT OF RIB MAT DURING

PRODUCTION ON LOOM

Conventional Scale to measure size

Page 18: Rib Mat Production Process

Capacity: One operator can weave 24~30 placemats of size 13´x19´

per day

Limitation: Size variation due to improper shrinkage due to tension variation, beating

variation and conventional method of measurement.

Shrinkage variation due to tension variation and beating variation.

Number of picks and ribs variation due to variation of power applied duringbeating. It depends very much on operator strength like young age operator

has greater strength as compare to old age operators. It also depends on

freshness and fatigue of the weaver.

Advantages:The biggest advantage of handloom product is that all production being

done with conventional source of energy.

Provides employment to large number of people in cottage industry.

Fabrics with Unlimited number of colors in weft can be produced. Smaller

quantities in each design can be produced.

The product will have a distinct handmade texture.
