While mild conditions forced thecancellation of the third leg of theInco Cup Series at Timmins, springdelayed itself long enough to allowthe fourth set of races to take placeat Sudbury's Adanac Hill last month.

Slalom and dual slalom eventswere held. At the end of the day'scompetition the winners of team andindividual awards had been decidedfor the 1981 edition of the Inco Cup.

New strapping machineAt Copper refinery

It's all done safely in a matter of afew minutes. Some 5,000 pounds offull plate electro-refined coppercathodes are strapped together into aneat, box-like package, ready forweighing before being shipped to thecustomer.

The new, full plate electro-refinedcopper cathode strapping machine,located in the wirebar storagebuilding at the copper refinery, is thefirst of its kind in the Ontario division,according to Brooks Matthews,production assistant at the copperrefinery.

"The strapping machine wasinstalled to improve operationefficiency, " Brooks said. In the pastcopper cathodes were strappedmanually, a procedure which requiredmany hours and men to complete.There was no facility for straighteningthe cathodes before they werestrapped. "The new strapper reducesthe time and manpower required forstrapping the cathodes," Brooksexplained. "It also provides a neater,more secure package for ourcustomers."

Strapping copper cathodes now isbasically a three-man operation. Itinvolves a cathode handler truckoperator, a forklift operator and aprocess laborer whoseresponsibilities include guiding theoperators safely to the properpositions at the strapping machine,as well as ensuring that the strappingmachine area is clean.

A fork-lift type vehicle with ahydraulically powered clampattachment capable of rotating 360degrees, is the backbone of theoperation. The cathode handler truckoperator removes a number of copper

cathodes from the vertical narrowgauge cars and transports them to asteel bumping block where they are..squared and put into proper positionfor strapping. From the bumpingblock, the cathode handler truckoperator takes the cathodes to theautomatic strapper.

There, the same operator activatesthe programmed strapping sequenceon the pulpit-shaped remoteautomatic console. With guidancefrom his helper, the same truckoperator places the cathodes inproper position on the strappingmachine's turntable. He then pushesa button on an upright remotecontrolled unit which in turn activatesthe hydraulically-powered strapper.

A hydraulic platen or pressdescends, compressing the cathodesinto a tighter package. The platen

remains in a compressed positionwhile the 1 1/4 inch wide steelstrapping wraps around the cathodessecuring them into a tight bundle.The table turns 90 degrees and thestrapping procedure is repeated."This crisscross type of strappingsecures the cathodes well forshipping," Brooks commented.

The forklift truck operator removesthe strapped cathodes from the tableand stocks them for future weighingor places them on flat cars forimmediate weighing.

"The strapping machine producesa high quality package for ourcustomers," said Ray Moskalyk,plant engineer at the copper refineryand one of those responsible for theinstallation. "We've been verypleased with the machine'sperformance."

Al Lippold, an instrument designer in the general engineeringdepartment, has been working at Inco for 12 years. Al and his wifeMarlene, have two active youngsters, Mark, 3, standIng, and Jamiewho is 2 years old. Dad readily admits the boys are experts in raisinghavoc around the house. Al is involved in hockey during the winter andblooperball in the summer. Marlene likes to sew, swim and crewelwhich is similar to embroidering, in her spare time.

Joyce Huneault is keypunch coordinator in the computerservices department in Copper Cliff. Joyce anddaughters from left, Debbie, 23, Sue. 18, and Cathy, 20,make good use of the family cottage at Long Lake. Inthe winter they take to the lake to do some skating andcross-country skiing. Bowling is also a popular winterpastime. The warm summer weather draws them to thecottage, where they swim, pitch horseshoes and goboating. Debbie is employed at Inco 's purchasIngdepartment in Copper Cliff; Sue attends Lively DistrictSecondary School and Cathy works in Sudbury.

Marcel Demers, a driller at McCreedy West mine, has been working atInco for 11 years. Marcel, his wife Ann, children Mellissa, 4,Genevieve, 17 months, and Ramsey, 4 months, spend the summermonths at the cottage at Lake Penage. Marcel ice fishes in his sparetime and is often accompanied by a fellow lover of the sport, daughterMellissa. Ann enjoys sewing and cross-country skiing/n her leisure hours.

Site preparation for the new electro cobalt refinery at Port Colborne issteadily progressing. Some of the underground services are currentlybeing installed and construction of the actual building is due to beginlater this month.The project began last summer with the demolition of the abandonedelectrolytic nickel refining tankhouse, Due to be completed in the fallof 1982, the new 28,000 square foot building is shown in the drawingabove. The photo shows the construction site as it appeared inmid-March.

At the request of Bill Collis,chairman of the Metal Mining Division, of the Canadian Institute of Miningand Metallurgy and former managerof the Frood-Stobie complex, the

• Sudbury Branch of the Metal MiningDivision hosted the CIM's fifthUnderground Operators' Conferenceheld Feb. 15 - 18 at the Holiday Inn.

Over 500 delegates registered forthe conference, according to MervDickhout, formerly the generalchairman of the conferencecommittee and Inco's manager ofmines engineering. Approximately 50Inco delegates, many of whom wereresponsible for organizing theconference, were in attendance.Representatives from Canada, theUS, Germany, Ireland, Peru and Indiatook part in the three-day event.

The conference was held, Mervexplained, "to provide and exchangeinformation on mining procedures,new designs, developments and usesof mining equipment."

Activities during the conferenceGeologist Elwood Wohlberg explained, with the use of a geological included technical sessions in whichmap, the origins of ore in the Sudbury Basin during the delegates' visitto South Mine.

representatives from mining-relatedorganizations presented papers onspecific aspects of undergroundmining methods. There were alsounderground tours of Algoma andSudbury area mines such as lnco'sStobie, Creighton, Copper Cliff Southand McCreedy West mines.

The conference was a big successfor a number of reasons, said Merv.

The large number of people whoattended was greater than we hadanticipated. The technical papers andtheir presentations were of highquality and we had good audienceparticipation."

"The social functions held inconjunction with the conference gavethe delegates an opportunity toexchange technical information," headded. 'The underground tours wereoversubscribed, which indicated thepopularity of the tours. Theassistance we received from thenational CIM headquarters inorganizing the conference alsocontributed to ts success." During a technical session, Keith Somerville of Inco Metals Company,

Manitoba division, presented a paper on the development andimplementation of functional training at Thompson mine.

The Confederation SecondarySchool Rock Stage Band needs littleintroduction to the youth of Sudburyand area. The band members, mostof them sons and daughters of lncoemployees, have been boogyingtheir way into the hearts of manypeople for over a year. The result isa'most always a standing ovation forevery performance.

The Rock Band was formed a yearand a half ago when the schools onlymusic teacher, Norm Mcintosh,realized the students of Confederationwere bored with classical music.Enrollment in the music program haddwindled to 50 students and was injeopardy of being phased out.

The students here says Norm,are not excited about traditional

school music programs. They don'tlike playing it and the audience is notthrilled about listening to it, So Ichanged the format to one they would

This can bedifficult at times because we must beable to play the song darned close tothe original record. But we must begood at it becaUse the first time weplayed in the gym here the audiencewas on their feet all through theperformance.

In addition to playing at areaschools, the band has beenentertaining the general public atfunctions such as the Santa ClausParade, the Snow-A-Rama for Timmy,telethons and an appearance onCable 7. Recently, they hosted aBand-A-Thon at their school, in aneffort to raise funds for a spring tourof Southern Ontario.

Our main objective, this year. isto have our music heard, to make it

known to the public. After all, if noone hears us, what is the sense ofworking so hard?"

Norm admits the performances arenot typical of other school musicdepartments. The many strobe andspotlights, along with dry ice effects,are evidence of this. But rock musicallows for more self-expression on thepart of band members. Going on theroad' has enabled them to realize theamount of hard work involved inperforming professionally.

"The success of the band cannotbe attributed to the performancesalone," says Confederation'sprincipal Bill Marotta. He feels thestudents' respect for their teacher,and Norm's own personality, are thedriving forces behind the band.

'Norm is a very energetic person.He's very enthusiastic about theprogram. He gives a tremendous

amount of time to these kids, overand above what is required. But he isa demanding teacher and the kidslove it," says Bill.

To Norm, the band is a dreamcome true. The 26 year old conductorspent most of his teen years playingin a rock band. Today he findshimself right at home playing hiselectric guitar and singing Johnny-B-Good with the band.

"The kids and I love this band alot," says Norm. "There is not muchfor them to do here in the Valley.Instead of hanging around streetcorners they spend their free timepracticing. And because of all thetime and hard work involved inputting our shows together, thesekids have less time to get themselvesinto trouble. That's great. I thinkwe've got one of the best, mostaccomplished bands in the Region."

Inco, on behalf of all employees, supports a variety ofcommunity clubs, groups, organizations, institutions andprojects by means of financial contributions and donations ofgoods and services. These worthy causes range from medicalto recreational, and from educational to cultural, and areexamples of Inco's commitment to the communities in whichour employees and their families live and work. Listed hereare a few of the many institutions and other establishments,who were assisted in numerous ways over the past few months.

The Sudbury Symphony has launched anothersuccessful season thanks to loyal season'sticket subscribers and contributions fromgovernment and corporate sources. Included inthe list of donations is a cheque for $5, 000from Inco Metals Company. The money helpsthe 65 member orchestra cover variousoperational costs. The next Sudbury Symphonyevent "Pops Concert" will be on May 2nd.

The smiles couldn't have been brighter on the hundreds of visitors whoattended the official opening ceremonies for the Critical Care Unit atthe Sudbury Memorial Hospital recently. The hard work and financialsupport from the Sudbury community culminated in the opening of the15-bed special care unit for the critically ill - intensive care, coronarycare and burn patients.One of the guests participating in the ribbon-cutting ceremonies wasRon Brown, assistant to the president of Inco Metals Company,Ontario division, assisted by master of ceremonies John Crandall,president of the Sudbury Memorial Hospital Board of Governors.Inco has donated $50,000 to the Critical Care Unit funa drive- The$1,053.00 already raised, is just shy of the hospital's target of$1086000.The unit features up-to-date medical services such as a burn bath,jacuzzi and pressure-controlled isolation rooms. "We were pleasantlysurprised with the genuine community involvement in this project, "saidEsko Vainio, executive director of the Sudbury Memorial Hospital. "Theestablishment of the critical care unit reinforces Sudbury as thehospital care referral centre for northeastern Ontario."

Ron Orasi, records administrator in the office services department,visited Lively District Secondary School recently to make a presentationon records and in formation management to grade 11 and 12commercial classes. During his presentation, Ron talked about futuretrends in filing such as microfilm and computer assisted retrieval. The setting was a burning motesa'ong a highway south of the city.Not equipped to enter the bui'ding,the competitors had three patients tomove away from the bui'ding andtreat. One of the victims was hangingfrom a motes window and needed tobe rescued with a adder. White theyworked feverish'y with the task athand, competitors had to dea' withthe antics of the agitated motesowner, p'ayed beautifuHy by HayesKirwin, a p'ant protection officer atCreighton.

As in a rea' ife situation, ParkerShie'd prob'ems a'ways have surpriseincidents. This time, firefightersarrived on the scene and found ayoung girt, Robin Derochie, daughterof first aid instructor Dave, in the

burning bui'ding suffering from smokeinha'ation. After a fireman had givenmouth to mouth resuscitation to theyoungster, the first aid peop'e wereto take over, comfort the chi'd andher worried mother, Janet Kenyon,who happened upon the accident.

Just when everything seemedunder contro', the competitors hearda oud rumb'ing, foHowed by a crashStumb'ing out of the motes was aserious'y burned fireman, Pau'Kenyon, who they had to treatprompt'y and property. Judges stoodon the set scrutinizing every movemade by the contestants.

The rea'ism, which has become ahamark of the Parker Shie'dtradition, was attained once morewith the construction of a motesfacade. Smoke, created by dry ice,biHowed out of the structure, whitethe semb'ance of fire was given byflashing orange and red ightsinstaHed behind the bui'ding. This set,a'ong with many of the sets in thefirst aid pre'iminaries, wasconstructed by Lione' Rochon, p'antprotection supervisor at the CopperCUff sme'ter, Ron Gichrist, a p'antprotection officer, John Piazza andArmando Urso of the transportationdepartment. Sound effects whichincuded the crack'e of f'ames, thecrash of a faHing bui'ding and the

waiting of a firetruck siren wereprovided by Doug Stickes.

Tension reached a crescendo asRon M. Brown, assistant to thepresident of nco's Ontario division,stepped to the microphone toannounce the new champion. Hespoke the words "Levack mine"sparking a oud and ong ovation fromthe audience and a round of eaps,bear-hugs and sef-congratuationsfrom the e'ated winners. Levack wasrepresented by Miche Beanger, RegChartrand, Rod Burns, Marce' Henri,Tom Luoma and coach MervMcLaugh'in

Among the first to congratu'ate thenew champions were members of thecopper refinery team, GaetanRainviHe, Ray Cottin, Lois Lawrence,Jane Proux, Len Lecair and coachNorm St. Amand. Mr. Brown notedthat this victory had broken a tie thathad existed between the twomanageria' areas. Both had won theParker Shie'd six times in the past.

This Parker Shie'd competition washistoric in two senses. t marked thefirst time that fema'e first aidcompetitors had participated in thefinaL t a'so marked the ast time thatthe contest wi be heed in theconfines of the venerab'e nco C'ub.The company wi be moving itsoffices from the c'ub to new quartersin downtown Sudbury.

The R.D. Parker ShieldSteeped in history

In its 44 year history, the RD.Parker Shield competition hasbecome known as the ultimate test ofa first aid team's knowledge,imagination and dedication. lncoPensioner Bert Debney played a greatrole in molding this and other first aidcontests at lnco into the high calibrechallenges they are today.

The son of a St. John's Ambulanceenthusiast, Bert was born in Englandand came to Canada with his parentsin 1913. He lived in Toronto until1930 when he moved to Sudbury anda job as a first aid man with thecompany at Frood mine.

Bert recalls the first aid facility atFrood as being the first suchpermanently staffed operation atInco. Previous to that, suchresponsibilities fell on the shouldersof the supervisory staff.

Not everyone was sold on the idea

of maintaining a permanent first aidstaff at a mine or plant. The Froodfacility, he says, was an experimentto judge its merits. Adds Bertlaughingly: 'The Frood set up was atest to see if we were worth thepowder to blow us across the room."

Along with two other men qualifiedwith St. John's Ambulancecertificates, Bob Kennedy and FredRibout, Bert worked, on a three shiftbasis, caring for casualties both onsurface and underground. He notesthat they were 'trying to prove wewere valuable and an asset to thehospital."

To further their cause in the eyesof management, the first aid menentered the provincial first aidcompetition. "We stuck our necks outand entered a competition for theMcCrea Cup (a trophy donated a fewyears before, for first aid competition

among Ontario mines, by theHonourable Charles McCrea),"recalls Bert.

Without an inkling of how a first aidcompetition was conducted, Bert andhis mates took part in the McCreaCup challenge. To everyone'ssurprise, including their own, Bert'steam finished only one point behindthe champions, McIntyre Mines. Henotes that this may have made adifference in the company's attitudetowards first aid men and theirfunctions.

The following year, 1931, Bert,with Bob Kennedy, Fred Ribout andPercy Smith once again competed forthe McCrea Cup. This time theIncoites swept to victory in theprestigious competition. Inrecognition of this historic occasion,the first Inco win at the provincialmeet. Bert and his teammates were

feasted and feted by the company.Thereafter the gospel of first aid

began spreading throughout lnco'soperations in the Sudbury area. Firstaid facilities become permanentfixtures of each mine and plant. Bertand his confreres found a powerfulsupporter in Ralph D. Parker, generalsuperintendent of the mining andsmelting division. Mr. Parker, hesays, thought that every man should

be armed with the knowledge of whatto do in case of a serious accidentwhether it was on or off the job.

From that time on, Bert and otherfirst aid people spent many hoursinstructing interested workers, duringtheir off time, in the basics of firstaid. He remembers it as being a

strictly voluntary thing" and verypopular. Mentions Bert: "We wereusing rented halls, any place we

could get, to get the men started intraining."

By 1936 the idea of starting firstaid competitions for all Inco plantswas proposed. Up until thencompetitions existed on an inter-departmental basis in Coniston onlywhere groups of St. John'sAmbulance trained men challengedone another for the John L. AgnewShield. Now departmental winnerswould contest the plant champion-ship. If successful they wouldeventually reach the all-plants finaland the championship symbolized bya trophy donated by Mr. Parker, theR.D. Parker Shield.

Up until this point, first aidcontests in Canada were conductedwithout the staging that is part ofcompetitions today. The casualtysituation was presented on paper.Competitors read and absorbed.Then, Bert remembers, men werequizzed, while attempting to visualizethe situation, by the judges. Theman with the best memory won," hemaintains.

No one particularly liked that wayof doing things but no one hadoffered any alternatives either. Bert,who had recently transferred fromFrood to Copper Cliff, found he hadbeen given the responsibility oforganizing new competitions. This hediscovered upon asking a seniorofficial, 'What are we going to doabout this competition? Don't askme," was the man's reply. 'You'llthink of something." Bert was offeredone guideline only: "RD. wantssomething different!"

Bert had been reading some firstaid magazines from England thatdetailed how the English had beenmaking their competitions moreinteresting by using different visualeffects. He thought something similarshould be attempted with Inco's newcompetitions. When he proposed anaccident should be staged andcompetitors scored on how theyreacted to the situation his superiorswere "horrified". "You won't getaway with that sort of thing," he wastold.

On the evening of March 25, 1937Bert, acting as master ofceremonies, explained what wouldtranspire to the ' brass" and thespectators that filled MemorialCopper Cliff Community Hall. Togauge the effect of what he said onhis superiors, Bert says he closelymonitored the motion of R.D.Parker's jaw as he chewed tobacco.

The teams, representing CopperCliff, Creighton, Coniston and Frood,were instructed to react to thesituation exactly as they would to areal accident. The problem theyfaced was a patient, lying on thefloor, who had been working on therailway track near the end of a steelcar. The engine hit the car from theopposite direction, knocking thevictim down heavily. Blood stainedone arm and his left leg was bent inan unnatural position. The teamswere given two minutes to study theproblem and map out their plan ofaction. Questions pertaining to thesafety of the location and thepatient's condition were posed by theteam to a presiding doctor. Onceenough information was gleaned adiagnosis was made and treatmentgiven.

In the final step of the competition,the patient was carried to the first aidroom where a doctor awaited theteam captain's report on the patient'scondition and the treatment given.The practical test was followed by anoral examination on phases of St.John's Ambulance work.

This novel approach to first aidcompetition was extremely wellreceived by the audience and thecompetitors. Mr. Parker, Bertreports, was just tickled." It markedthe first time in Canada, and probablyNorth America, that this method of

conducting a competition wasemployed.

Thereafter, Bert explains, propsgot better and simulations grew moreelaborate. Striving to make thesituation as realistic as possible, heeventually introduced sound effects.They thought I was crazy," he

chuckles. Now sound and visualeffects are an integral part of theParker competition. Simulated firesand explosions are now consideredcommonplace.

For the sake of realism, Bertinjected the element of theunexpected into his situations.Competitors have been surprised byeverything from bears (someonedressed up as a bear) to looters beingshot by police while working onvictims of a windstorm. This, inaddition to the incredible detail ofeach situation, has made the ParkerShield a true test of a first aid team.To win the Parker Shield you have to

first aid men rarely happened uponemergencies fully equipped, theelement of improvisation should beinjected into competitions. 'Often wewouldn't supply them witheverything," Bert states. "They hadto look for things we had secreted onthe scene and use them to theiradvantage."

Planning situations and sets wasboth meticulous and demanding. Bertand his co-workers had a model ofthe auditorium with which to work outa set for each accident. Coming upwith an entirely new situation with anappropriate number of complicationsand challenges, was times slightlyexasperating. Every spring though,Inco's first aid teams faced anothertough competition.

From the time of its inception, theParker Shield competitions have notlost their basic thrust; to introduceand instruct workers to the basics offirst aid and arouse a consciousnessfor doing things safely in and out ofthe workplace. The first aid programat Inco, Bert comments, has paidhandsome dividends in terms of livesthat have been saved and sufferingthat has been eased over the years.

Bert retired from Inco in 1 970 andremained involved with Inco's first aidcompetitions for a few more yearsbefore moving to Markham, Ontariowhere he currently resides. In histime with the company, Bert becameknown as "Mr. First Aid", a ratherappropriate name for a gentlemenwho has contributed so much to theevolution of first aid competitions atInco and who introduced a systemthat revolutionized competitions inCanada.

The week-long program wasconducted "to refresh the men'smemories on clearing lines andoperating hydraulic aerial equipmentand how to conduct that work

safely," explained Bill Hunt, safetytraining instructor with EUSA. Theprogram consisted of practical aswell as theoretical training.

The first part of the program dealtwith safety in line clearingoperations. The course includeddiscussions and demonstrations onelectrical theory, ropes and rigging,electric shock and high line hazards

hazards and work area protection.Much time was devoted to the

hydraulic aerial equipment coursewhich centered on the classificationand identification of types ofhydraulic equipment used in the utilityindustry, an introduction to the theoryof hydraulics and the application ofradial boom derricks and insulatedaerial devices. Most of the coursewas conducted in the field to give themen the opportunity to gain practicalexperience in operating hydraulicaerial equipment.

Nearly 250 delegates from throughout Northern Ontarioattended the 14th Annual Northern Conference of the DataProcessing Management Association at the Sheraton CaswellMotor Inn recently. lnco employees who belong to this non-profit professional association played an important role in theorganization of this successful conference. The firstrecipient was Louis Gazdlc, a welder specialist, who hasworked for over 40 years without a medical aid. Joe Haraplak, a maintenance mechanic at the smelter, hasevery reason in the world to smile. A safety belt saved his life IAlong with fellow maintenance mechanics, Joe was repairingthe main hoist motor on the overhead crane some 60 feetabove ground in the converter aisle at the smelter when hispipe wrench jammed against the motor base. With a hammerJoe was able to loosen the wrench, but as he stepped forwardto retrieve it, he lost his balance and fell - only three feet,thanks to the safety line attached to his safety belt. Fellowworkers quickly came to Joe's rescue, pulling him up to theplatform where they were all working. "After an experience likethat, I now realize the importance of wearing a safety belt,Joe stated. "It has made me appreciate life even more."

Bob Butler, supervisor in environmental control, fields aquestion from one of the 52 students from the University ofWaterloo who toured Inco operations in Copper Cliff last month.As part of their studies of man and me environment and, moreparticularly, the acid precipitation controversy, the Waterloostudents travelled north to gain an insight into the miningindustry.

Sudbury suggestion planOver $8,000 awardedthis month

Major winners$1810 Harold Tunney, now retired from central shops, led this edition of the suggestion plan parade

by recommending the use of FelsPoxy in the repair of rotor shafts and seal covers. In thepast these fits were either welded or sleeved which required considerably more workinghours. Often heat from the welding process would bend the shaft causing a need for furtherrepairs. Now repairs can be made with reduced labor costs without increasing material costs.

$1230 Ernest Gervais and Fraser Oakley at Stobie mine noticed that teeth adapters welded ontothe surface of Hagg loader claws were breaking off. They suggested using an adapter thatwould slip in on both sides of the claw arm. Labor and material costs have been reducedsignificantly as a welder is no longer needed once or twice a month, and machines are nolonger down for long periods of time.

$180 Gus Alberton at the copper refinery warehouse earned some extra cash when he pointedout that material costs would be reduced if filament tape used in packaging was replaced by awider strip type of tape.

$150 A first class maintenance mechanic at the copper flash furnace at the Copper Cliff smelter,Johnny Nadalin, found that agitator shafts in the neutralizing tank were too long. With noanchor of any kind in the lower part of the tank, the shaft had a tendency of bending with abuild-up of feed. He suggested installing a 6 inch TY 316 stainless steel channel across thebottom of the tank with a hardwood block bearing. Now the agitator rod does not bend, savingon the purchase of new shafts and preventing possible damage to the tank.

$125 The idea of installing valves to the lines of spare pumps to control the flow of copper into thedesired pump earned George Beaudry of matte processing a nomination to the suggestionplan awards list. With the installation of these valves, employees now have control over spillsor can actually prevent them. A cleaner work place, a better flow of copper, fewer pumpskicking out after spills and the ability to shut down pumps, are some of the benefits.

$125 A potentially hazardous situation at the oxygen plant was rectified by an observant RegDeacon of central utilities. He noticed oil occasionally dripping on an oxygen line thatreaches temperatures in excess of 350 degrees F. His suggestion to install a protective coverover the pipe eliminated the threat of the oil igniting and causing a fire.

$125 George Kennedy of central utilities suggested that a skid unit, servicing the copper andnickel refineries, be rewired and generally updated.

$120 Leo Pharand of the Copper Cliff smelter suggested that rubber tires be placed on the fluedust box in the converter building. Now the box is dumped in a more efficient manner that hasimproved environmental conditions.

$100 Using size 80 chains to drive Eimco filter agitators instead of the size 60 variety was asuggestion of Joseph Barriault of the Copper Cliff smelter. The size 80 chains are strongerand last two years longer than the other.

$100 Ossie Parker of the Copper Cliff smelter devised a method of strengthening the sheaveassembly of a car pu'ler. Now there is not as much pressure on take-up screws and lessbreakage.

Port Colbornesuggestions pay off tothe tune of $1,105

Major winners$985 Alex Hanuska proposed the use of Tremplex paint to protect conveyor springs from corrosive

conditions that led to spring failure. The coating was very effective, and repairs were greatlyreduced, resulting in savings on parts and labor and improved operations in matte unloading.

$510 Eric Butler saw a way to eliminate spillage of screenings from the nickel rounds harperizerscreen. This spillage was a recurrent problem and Eric made several suggestions which led toinstallation of a screw conveyor system.

$350 Victor Goyak recommended some improvements to reduce the wear on the feed chute to theS rounds crusher. By making the chute from heavier gauge steel, improving alignment to thecrusher and installing a rubber liner in suitable position the wear problem was markedlyreduced.

$160 Jim Suess suggested a design improvement on the screen printer for nickel roundsmandrels. His idea enabled easier and quicker maintenance on pneumatic cylinders byremoving the guide bar and cylinder in one step.

$160 Steve Koskocky and Roy Woychyshyn suggested using wider dado blades for cuttingnotches in the plating tank woodwork. This eliminated the use of templates and permitted afaster, more accurate cutting operation.

$150 John Mikolasek and Bob Surridge suggested the use of jacks in dismantling reverberatoryfurnace bottoms. The jacks were used to dislodge bottom brick and proved more efficientthan cranes for lifting and eliminated possible damage to cranes.

Flouride added to drinking waterIn compliance with a fluoridation

by-law established by the RegionalMunicipality of Sudbury, lnco Metalshas implemented fluoridation at itsVermilion River water treatment plantThe treatment plant supplies drinkingwater to the communities ofCreighton Walden Copper Cliff,Murray Mine and 11 Inco facilities.

Inco Metals installed thefluoridation equipment which wassupplied by the Region. We are verypleased with the co-operation we'vereceived from Inco in the fluoridationof water," said Doug Partington, co-ordinator of environmental serviceswith the Regional Municipality ofSudbury.

Fluoridation is a highly effectivemethod of preventing dental cavities,primarily among children. Under thesurveillance and control of a watertreatment technician, approximatelyone milligram per litre of a fluoridecompound is added to the drinkingwater. "Our objective is to maintainthe amount of fluoride compoundbetween .8 and 1.2 milligrams perlitre," explained Ed Nevala,supervisor for sewage and water inthe central utilities department. "Thefluoride level must be .8 or above inorder to be effective for cavityprevention."

The fluoride compound is added tothe water in liquid form. A specificanalyzer monitors the flouride ionconcentration continuously. "Inaddition, we make routine checksdaily on the plant effluent," Ed said."One random sample is alsoanalyzed daily from the distributionsystem."

Some 38,000 cubic meters or10,000,000 gallons of water isfluoridated daily at the VermilionRiver water treatment plant,according to Ed. Of that total,approximately 10 per cent isconsumed by domestic users, whilethe rest is supplied to Inco facilities.The automatic control and metering

of the fluoridation system wasdesigned and installed by Inco'sgeneral engineering and centralutilities departments.

The system is maintained by thecentral utilities department. Theannual maintenance costs for thefluoridation system are minimal, Ed

added. "It costs us a fraction of acent per thousand gallons which isn'tmuch, considering the part thefluoridation plays in the prevention ofcavities.

"We've had no problems with thenew equipment. We've been verypleased with its performance."
