Tonight's program, Rhythm and Rhyme, celebrates the meeting of music and words. This is part of a year-long, university-wide study of the intersection of language and sound. We are, literally, covering the map as we roam from sacred music and poetry of the Judea-Christian, Hindu and Buddhist traditions to 1950' s dco-wop, cowboy odes, Irish reels, and new works of Lehigh students and faculty alike. We are pleased to welcome so many guest performers, especially those talented high school singers who participated in a choral festival at Zoellner today, sharing their music with us and joining us tonight - along with community members from Lehigh's Choral Union - to perform Lou Harrison's landmark setting of the Lo Karo Sutro. Lo Karo Sutro (The Heart Sutra) is offered as part of the University's on going preparations for the visit of the Dalai Lama to Lehigh this coming July. Please sit back and enjoy!

The Word Was God

In the beginning was the Word And the Word was with God And the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made that have been made Nothing was made, He hath not made All things were made by Him.

The Lamentation o!Jeremiah the Prophet Thomas Tallis (Part I) ( d. 1585)

The Lamentations o!Jere~niah stan~ at the pinnacle of English Renaiss.ance counterpoint. Each verse =: wzth successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet; in a~ oral tradition of transmittzng the Old Testament, these letters served as a mnemonzc device for the orator to recall the beginning of the next line of text. The Hebr~w letters themselves each hold mystery and meaning: Aleph, the first letter, is unzty and the name of God; Beth stands for a house, the number two, a conjoining of human and God.

In Part I of The Lamentations, Tallis incorporates the first two letters of the Hebrew alphabet, Aleph and Beth, in the Latin setting of the Lamentations. The Lamentations tell the stonJ of the fall of the temple in 587 B.C. to the Chaldeans and Israel's captivity. In Jewish traditions, the Lamentations are a reminder of the outcome of separation from God: the loss of identity as a nation and the retribution of sin. In Christian rite, the Lamentations are part of the Tenebrae services of Holy Week.

Evolatio II. WORDS AND MUSIC FROM LEHIGH

Luke Ranieri, poet and reader

Evolatio (Flying out) Dan Hal e premiere (b. 1984)

Chrissie Rapp, Elizabeth Woods, Heidi Schonbeck, sopranos Dan Halle, conductor

Evolatio (Flying Out) is an original Latin choral work in five movements for six part (SSATBB) choir with soprano solo and small mixed choir. Evolatio was conceived from a desire to write choral music using uncommon metaphors. Speaking with my roommate and lyricist Luke Ranieri, who is fluent in Latin, we settled on a libretto outlining a cogent sion] using some musical ideas. We decided on classical Latin as a working language before Luke went to write. Throughout the lyrical process we frequently spoke about the plot until we settled on a" day in the life of a flock of birds."

The more I worked with the words, the more the birds became a representation of the human condition. The sun for me represents time and eternity, and that our actions, though they may affect each day, do not affect eternity, as a new day will always come tomorrow. I hope you all enjoy the music and imagen] Luke and I have set for you here as much as we enjoyed the process of writing it.

The Frozen Logger Steven Sametz premiere (b. 1954)

Text by James Stevens (1892-1971)

On a cold February day (not so very long ago), Steven Sametz found this poem in an anthology of American poetrv, While it has been set to music previously, this is a newly composed version of the tall-tale, in which we are introduced to a II six-foot seven waitress II in a '1 timber-town cafe, 11 who tells us the story of her 11 Frozen Logger Love; 11 a man so tough that he didn't shave, but pounded his whiskers in with a hammer; hugged her so hard he II broke three vertabrae; 11 and kissed her so hard, 11 it nearly broke my jaw. 11 This nearly indestructable fellow only succumbed to weather 111000 degrees below zero," when he froze solid and "they made him into ax-blade to cut the Douglas fir. 11 Loggers, we are told, are a pretty hardy crew, for "no one but a logger stirs his coffee with his thumb. 11 Steven Sametz happily dedicates this new version of II The Frozen Logger" to the intrepid singers of the Lehigh University Choir.

Ramya, Indian classical dancer Arati Shah-Yukich & Steven Sametz

Shamalyo was created by Arati Shah-Yukich and Steven Sametz in October of 2007. The text is a setting of the poetess Mirabai. The speaker addresses Lord Krishna in his many guises: as a trickster, as the son of Nanda, as a child, etc. The speaker, tired of earthly concerns, wishes to rest by the banyan tree (a symbol of Kundalini or "root chakra" energiJ) and to lose herself in the river Jamana, where the vessel of identity, ego, will be broken open and there will be only the cleansing waters of Being.

Desh Indian raga, arr. Sperry Desh is one of the simplest and most beautiful ragas. The slow start is a lullaby,

where the word "mola" (sleep) is chanted in a seven-beat rhythmic cycle. It then moves into a faster cycle using syllables often used in children's games. As in Ramkali, Sperry uses the percussion syllables, or "sollakattu" which are used by Indian tabla players to learn rhythmic patterns. Here, the singers use the syllables to create lively rhythmic counterpoint.

III. WORDS OF THE HEART

Lehigh University Choir Lehigh University Percussion Ensemble

High School Festival Chorus and members of Lehigh Choral Union

Andrea Wittchen, harp Debra Field, organ

We are pleased to be presenting portions of Lou Harrison's Lo Karo Sutro, a setting of the Sanskrit Heart Sutra. The Heart Sutra is a part of the Perfection of Wisdom (Prajnpramit) of Mahyna Buddhist literature, describing the insight of the fundamental emptiness of all material reality. Form, feelings, desires, perceptions, and consciousness all yield to a higher Emptiness, an Ultimate Truth that lies beyond labels. "Form is empty. Emptiness is Form," says Avalokite[vara, the bodhisattva (Enlightened One) who embodies compassion in Buddhist'lraditions.

Lou Harrison set the Heart Sutra in 1973 using a translation into Esperanto. While Harrison studied with Henry Cowells, Arnold Schoenberg and Virgil Thompson, his fascination with the music of southeast Asia led him to percussion compositions (sometimes working with John Cage) and to write in microtonal scales. After a trip to Japan in 1961, he started to establish gamelan orchestras in America. These were inspired by Indonesian and Javanese gamelans: ensembles comprised of brass pots, metal xylophones, and gongs.

Harrison and his life-partner, William Colvig, began to construct gamelan-type instruments at their home in Aptos, California using tin cans and aluminum furniture tubing. The instrument used tonight was constructed by Harrison and Colvig. It is comprised of five so-called "gender" (tubular bell xylopones), a hanging set of sawed-off oxygen tanks tuned to a D-pentatonic scale, several large triangles and a "gerontak" or "sweet bell tree. The gamelan is on loan from the University of California - Santa Cruz.
