PRODUCER PROFILE:

The LiberatorThe Liberator is the name adopted by wine-finder extraordinaire (long-term Society supplier and Master of Wine) Richard Kelley, a former resident of South Africa who knows the ground there better than most outside the Cape. He sources parcels of wine from the great and the good of the South African wine industry and gives them a better home under a cleverly designed Liberator persona (go to theliberatorwine.com for the full experience). These parcels may be lots that simply don’t fit into an Estate blend, however good they are, or that are surplus to that property’s requirements yet too good to be lost in an anonymous blend or sold to an eager competitor. In most cases the producer prefers to be discreet about his – or her – part in all this, which we are happy to respect in the knowledge that these wines hail from some of the best addresses and winemaking hands in South Africa and at very un-greedy prices... on top of which our Special Edition parcels are all exclusive to Society members.

The Liberator ‘Trample Dance’, Western Cape 2012A Cape Blend (the capital ‘B’ determines a minimum pinotage component) with 33% pinotage at its heart, complemented by 27.5% touriga nacional, 20% shiraz, 11% grenache and 8.5% mourvèdre. A fragrant, silky-smooth red with plenty of character for the price. 14% ref AF-SA10551 £7.95 bottle £95 dozen

The Liberator ‘Midnight Bakkie’, Western Cape 2014Rich and complex old-vine chenin with 9% of the Rhône grape roussanne which lifts the palate and brings a hint of spice. From one of the highly regarded young bucks of the Cape wine industry, whose vineyard-seeking miles in a pick-up are alluded to in the name. 14% ref AF-SA10571 £9.95 bottle £119 dozen

The Liberator ‘Butch & The Sunrise Kid’, Western Cape 2013Better than the sum of its parts, a blend can offer far greater complexity than a single varietal at this price level, and here represents the partnership of the two young winemakers who collaborated to produce this wine. A menu-friendly white with old-vine chenin blanc at its heart, lifted in freshness and aroma by roussanne, chardonnay and viognier. 14% ref AF-SA9341 £9.95 bottle £119 dozen

NEW The Liberator Special Edition ‘A Motley Cru’, Coastal 2014Hot off the boat, this is a truly Rhône-inspired blend of the region’s white grapes. Led by 69% top-notch roussanne, it embraces 23% viognier, 6% grenache blanc, and 2% marsanne to create a rich and spicy complex white for the dinner table. Best decanted. Now to 2018. 13% ref AF-SA11021 £10.95 bottle £131 dozen

The Liberator ‘Blood Brothers’ Red Label, Stellenbosch 2011Contrast Jordan Estate’s single-varietal shiraz with this robust, velvety Rhône-inspired red from Stellenbosch (with a touch of Californian spice), exclusive to Society members. A new world take on Châteauneuf, if you will, with a splash of zinfandel for good measure. Now to 2018. 14.5% ref AF-SA10561 £11.95 bottle £143 dozen

The Liberator ‘Blood Brothers’ Blue Label, Stellenbosch 2012The Blue Label takes its inspiration from Bordeaux – it’s a blend of merlot, cabernets sauvignon and franc, petit verdot and malbec – with typical cedar and tobacco notes lifted by juicy berry fruit. This one will benefit from cellaring (to 2020) but if you enjoy your reds in the bloom of youth, decant and indulge now. 14% ref AF-SA10541 £11.95 bottle £143 dozen

Percheron Shiraz-Mourvèdre, Western Cape 2014Now an established favourite in our range, its name recalls the Percheron draught horses which once ploughed the old Swartland vineyards from which this wine hails. A rich and warming winter red. 14.5% ref AF-SA10291 £5.75 bottle £69 dozen

Percheron Old-Vine Cinsault, Western Cape 2014Made from old, low-yielding, dry-farmed bush vines in the Swartland which impart a velvety texture to this lightly coloured, sweet-scented red which is just as enjoyable served on the cool side. 14.5% ref AF-SA10301 £5.75 bottle £69 dozen

Douglas Green Shiraz-Viognier, Western Cape 2014The white grape viognier was once commonly blended with the red syrah (aka shiraz) in the northern Rhône, and this tradition has been adopted worldwide by winemakers seeking to tame syrah’s sometimes wild flavours and bold spice. Strangely, it contributes to the deep colour of the wine as well as its perfume. 13.5% ref AF-SA10691 £5.95 bottle £71 dozen

NEW False Bay Shiraz, Western Cape 2013On my last visit I was spoilt for choice tasting inexpensive shiraz, and this one, from the team at Waterkloof, stood out for its true varietal character, smooth moreish palate and very modest price. Traditionally matured in large old wooden vats and bottled without filtration. 13.5% ref AF-SA10821 £6.25 bottle £75 dozen

Villiera Down to Earth Touriga Nacional-Shiraz, Stellenbosch 2013This red blend takes one step outside the Rhône palette by blending shiraz with old-vine touriga nacional – the port grape and one formerly used for Villiera’s fortified wine. Deep in colour, fragrant and silky, it is a delicious match for roast pork and moves effortlessly through to the cheese course too. 14% The 2014 follows. ref AF-SA9971 £7.50 bottle £90 dozen

The Wolftrap, Western Cape 2014This super-reliable blend has a higher proportion of syrah in 2014 (82%), with just a splash of viognier, and the balance mourvèdre. A spicy and smooth, robust but polished red from the excellent Boekenhoutskloof stable. 14.5% ref AF-SA10391 £7.50 bottle £90 dozen

NEW Painted Wolf ‘Pedals’ Pinotage, Coastal 2012Jeremy and Emma Borg’s winemaking venture is named after the African wild dog, or Painted Wolf, and they make a donation to the Tusk Trust for each bottle sold in the UK, supporting their wild dog projects in Africa. The wine is sweet and spicy, with juicy red and black-fruit flavours. 13.5%. The 2013 follows. ref AF-SA10511 £7.95 bottle £95 dozen

NEW Jordan Estate Bradgate Syrah, Stellenbosch 2014The Jordans produce an astonishingly good range in their must-stop winery just outside Stellenbosch (now with sophisticated accommodation as well as café/bakery and acclaimed restaurant). This is fresh and peppery young syrah, its careful use of oak well integrated. 13.5% ref AF-SA11001 £8.50 bottle £102 dozen

NEW Kaapzicht Bin 3 Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch 2011If syrah et al are not for you then go for this richly satisfying merlot-dominant Bordeaux blend from family-owned model estate Kaapzicht. As it says on the label: ‘We trade fair, because we care: every bottle of wine contributes to the education of our farm children’. 14.5% ref AF-SA10951 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen

NEW Spice Route Grenache, Swartland 2014Spice Route hit the headlines long before the Swartland region was internationally recognised. Long-term specialists in Rhône varietals and blends, their grenache is still relatively new: ‘It comes off the worst part of the farm,’ says cellarmaster Charl du Plessis – an advantage when it comes to this hardy grape. ‘Only grenache would grow there’. The result is a sweetly heady and seductively fragrant red. 14% ref AF-SA10911 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen

NEW Thelema Shiraz, Stellenbosch 2012From a beautiful family-owned and run estate, this is a great example of Stellenbosch shiraz, spicy and rich with full plummy fruit and smooth palate. Now to 2017. 14% ref AF-SA11061 £12.50 bottle £150 dozen

NEW Spice Route Chakalaka, Swartland 2013A multi-varietal blend with syrah at its heart, this velvety red is a celebration of the richness in diversity found in the Cape’s Swartland region. Chakalaka is a South African blend of spices, a name which sums up this wine’s flavoursome savoury character perfectly. Now to 2019. 14.5% ref AF-SA10921£12.95 bottle £155 dozen

NEW Paul Cluver Estate Pinot Noir, Elgin 2013We couldn’t resist this pristine, silky, cool-climate pinot as a foil to all the Rhône richness above. Elgin pioneer Paul Cluver Estate is still one of the best producers of the grape in the Cape, in a fresh, modern style. Now to 2017. 13.5% ref AF-SA10991 £13.50 bottle £162 dozen

Beaumont Mourvèdre, Bot River 2012Sebastian Beaumont’s mourvèdre just pipped Spice Route at the post for inclusion here: a juicy, gently sweet ‘garriguey’ and silky red with good freshness, and relatively moderate alcohol. Now to 2018. 13.5% ref AF-SA10841 £17 bottle £204 dozen

Boekenhoutskloof The Chocolate Block, Western Cape 2013Majority Swartland fruit, Marc Kent’s Rhône-inspired blend does include 12% cabernet, but with 71% syrah, 11% grenache, 5% cinsault, 1% viognier, its style is very much Mediterranean: rich and spicy, smooth and velvety. Now to 2019. 14.5% ref AF-SA10641 £18 bottle £216 dozen

EVERYDAY REDS

RHONE-INSPIRED REDS AND WHITES

In 2010 we were already singing the praises of the Cape’s affinity with Rhône grape varieties, red and white. Since then there has been an explosion in the number of styles – blends and single varietals – from the depth and richness of Swartland to cool-climate Constantia. Quality has come on in leaps and bounds too, notably at the modest end of the price scale, so there is something here to suit all pockets.

If a change of taste is in order, there are numerous other wines to tempt your taste buds, including new, award-winning and established names. Exploration is made easy (and rewarding – there are savings up to £14.50) via five mixed cases, including an exclusive case from The Liberator of wines you will find nowhere else.

Drink over the next year. 13.5% ref AF-SA11071 £9.95 bottle £119 dozen

SWEET WINENEW Adoro Mourvèdre Natural Sweet, Swartland 2013 50clQuite simply a ‘wow’ wine when first tasted back in June this year. Malmesbury fruit was left to overripen (‘borderline raisin,’ says winemaker Ian Naudé) on the vine, the result blended with young wine to create a Natural Sweet style (no fortification). Intense and vivid in colour with gorgeous crunchy black fruits and a touch of tannin to moderate its approximately 60 grams of residual sugar. Recommended for cheese or chocolate desserts, and p'''''' ' erfect with retro strawberries dipped in chocolate, says Ian. Now to 2018. 14% ref AF-SA11271 £9.95 50cl bottle £119 dozen

NEW Catherine Marshall Sauvignon Blanc, Elgin 2014Cool-climate sauvignon blanc needs time in bottle to show its best hand and Cathy Marshall’s wine is no exception. Restrained in style yet it stood out in a line-up of excellent Cape sauvignons, with delightful vivid fresh grapefruit, lime and passionfruit aromas and crisp, mineral palate. 13% ref AF-SA11141 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen

NEW Bouchard Finlayson Blanc de Mer, Cape South Coast 2014An eclectic and delicious mix, as ever, and the Cape’s only riesling-led blend, with 24% viognier, 4% chardonnay and 3% chenin blanc. Drink over the next year. 13.5% ref AF-SA11071 £9.95 bottle £119 dozen

The Foundry Roussanne, Stellenbosch 2013One of few single-varietal roussannes in the Cape, its sometimes austere persona refined by Chris Williams to make a delicious mineral yet rounded example with hints of greengage and a touch of spice. Serve with white meats or richer fish and shellfish dishes. Now to 2017. 13.5% ref AF-SA11031 £11.50 bottle £138 dozen

NEW Paul Cluver Estate Chardonnay, Elgin 2014Classy and succulent barrel-fermented, cool-climate chardonnay with a light touch, from Paul Cluver’s beautiful Elgin vineyards, where ‘sustainable production mindful of the environment and of social responsibility are cornerstones of the family’.

Page 4: RHONE-INSPIRED REDS AND WHITES€¦ · Sebastian Beaumont’s mourvèdre just pipped Spice Route at the post for inclusion here: a juicy, gently sweet ‘garriguey’ and silky red

The Winery of Good Hope Unoaked Chardonnay, Western Cape 2014Elegantly balanced chardonnay, more Burgundian than new world in style, this is creamy and fresh on the palate, made without oak ageing but kept on its fine lees during maturation in tank for extra texture and depth. NEW Zevenwacht 7even Bouquet Blanc, Stellenbosch 2015Zevenwacht is a large and beautiful estate with a whole host of grape varieties planted. This is their popular fragrant, off-dry blend: 56% viognier with 28% muscat de Frontignan and 16% gewürztraminer, delicious on its own but a great match for a stir fry or lightly spiced Malay and Thai dishes. 13.5% ref AF-SA11041 £7.75 bottle £93 dozen

De Morgenzon DMZ Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch 2015Benchmark old-vine chenin in a great vintage from an award-winning winery and winemaker. This is full but fresh and appetising, with bright citrus aromas and a food-friendly, creamy-textured palate. 14% ref AF-SA10611 £8.50 bottle £102 dozen

Painted Wolf ‘Peloton’ Blanc, Coastal 2014 Peloton Blanc replaces Jeremy Borg’s Lekanyane blend and the new name makes reference to his fundraising expeditions on two wheels. This noble wine (Tusk Trust’s wild dog projects in Africa benefit from each bottle sold in the UK) is a fresh and savoury, lightly barrel-fermented chenin-based blend that offers real complexity at a modest price. 13% ref AF-SA10621 £8.95 bottle £107 dozen
