QUALITY RETURNSThrough eight games, Brandon Johnson-Farrell leads CAA Football in kick returns (28) and kick return yards (571). Morgan is third in the league with his average of 22.6 yards per return, while Johnson-Farrell is fifth with 20.4 yards per return. The duo’s success in the kicking game has Rhode Island on pace to challenge the school’s record for total kick return yardage in a season, 1,296, which was set in 2009. Through eight games, Rhode Island has 1,006 return yards as a team.

BACK AT ITBrandon Johnson-Farrell already is the top kick returner in Rhode Island history with 2,531 career kick return yards. He has three of the top 10 kick return seasons in Rhode Island history. He holds the URI record for kick return yards in a season with 907 during his freshman season in 2008. Last season, he had 653 kick return yards, the fifth highest single season total in school history. This season, he has 571 return yards so far, the ninth highest single-season mark.

CENTURY MARKSophomore wide receiver Robbie Jackson became the first Ram this season to top 100 receiving yards in a game when he caught six passes for 108 yards. Fellow wide receivers Brandon Johnson-Farrell and Billy Morgan have combined to top 100 all-purpose yards nine times through eight games this season. Johnson-Farrell has 1054 all-purpose yards (486 receiving, 571 kick return, and -3 rushing). Morgan has 648 all-purpose yards (272 receiving, 361 kick return, and 15 rushing). Ani is ninth overall and tied for second among defensive backs in the conference with 7.6 tackles per game. Bose is 15th overall with 7.0 tackles per game and leads Rhode Island with 56 total tackles.

Last week, defensive back Rondell Lane got his first career start, becoming the 38th different player to start for the Rams this season. Rhody has started 18 different players on offense, and 18 different players on defense.

Johnson - a third-team All-CAA Football selection in 2011 - appeared in three games this season and made 26 tackles, which currently ranks third on the team. The team will explore the possibility of getting a medical red-shirt for Johnson to recoup one year of eligibility.

he went through with the donation a month later.

“The fact that I could impact one person’s life so much by doing such a simple thing, sitting in a chair for a couple of hours and basically getting some blood drawn, it’s just unreal.”

ANOTHER MARROW MATCHDefensive backs coach Ryan Mattison underwent a procedure to donate bone marrow earlier this week at Mass General Hospital in Boston. He became the third person from the Rhode Island athletics family in 18 months to serve as an exact marrow match through the football team’s annual bone marrow registration drive on behalf of Be the Match and the National Marrow Donor Program.

Senior Matt Greenhalgh made a donation for an adult male in April of 2011, and former women’s rowing captain Grace Rignanese was a match for an 18-year-old girl last January.Mattison was back at work one day later, reporting to work just hours after leaving Mass General, where he’d been kept overnight for monitoring following the procedure.

“I had no reservations about going though with the donation,” Mattison said. I’m happy to be able to give the opportunity at life for a child. Knowing that within hours of them taking my marrow sample, the recipient would get was pretty exciting to hear.”

Mattison, who joined head coach Joe Trainer’s staff in February, helped recruit people to register for the marrow drive last April. However, it wasn’t until talking with Trainer during the drive that he signed up as a potential donor, a decision that very well may have saved the life of his recipient.

“While we were helping people register, Coach Trainer approached me and asked if I had thought about doing it. I realized, ‘You know what? I’m asking people to sign up, but I hadn’t thought about it myself,’” Mattison said. “I read over the materials, and decided to do it. I didn’t expect it to happen right away, but it happed very quickly.

“I am a faithful person, and I believe things happen for a reason. If I don’t get hired to coach here, this doesn’t happen.”

Over the last four years, the Rhode Island football team has added more than 900 new registrants to

the National Marrow Donor Program.

TIMMINS, JOHNSON EARN PRESEASON HONORSJunior defensive end James Timmins and senior linebacker Doug Johnson were named to the CollegeSportsMadness.com CAA Football Football Preseason All-Conference team. He averaged 10.6 yards per catch and had three touchdowns.

TAKE YOUR PICKSenior Clement Ani and junior Mackenzie Elliott each intercepted a pass against James Madison, the first two picks of the season for Rhode Island. It was the second interception of Ani’s career, and the first career pick for Elliott.

NEW FACES IN THE CROWDOf the 84 players on the Rhode Island roster, 38 are in their first season with the Rams. Several of the newcomers are having an immediate impact this season. Of the 38 newcomers, 16 have seen action through the first eight games. Ten of the first-year Rams have made at least one start, combining for 34 total starts.

Former left tackle Jason Foster was in training camp with the Colts before being cut in August. Former Ram Matt Hansen is injured, but is still with the Atlanta Falcons, while Virgil Gray is with the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League.

GREENHALGH MEETS MARROW RECIPIENTIn April of 2011, senior center Matt Greenhalgh donated his bone marrow to an anonymous leukemia patient in Florida. On Aug. 19, Greenhalgh got to meet Ken, the cancer patient, during an event at the Florida Hospital - Orlando. “It was a surreal experience,” Greenhalgh said. “They called Ken up and introduced him. He explained his story, and then they said, ‘Could his donor Matt please join him up here in front of everyone.’ I was turning red, and everyone stood up and started clapping. The first thing (Ken) said was, ‘This is Matt, and he saved my life.’”

Each year, the football team holds a bone marrow registration drive in support of the National Marrow Donor Program. On March 17, 2011 Greenhalgh found out he was an exact match, and

Rhode Island Will Stay With CAA FootballRhode Island will remain a member of CAA Football, Director of Athletics Thorr Bjorn announced on Aug. 28. On Aug. 7, 2012, the Rams were extended an invitation to stay in the league by CAA commissioner Tom Yeager.

“We are very appreciative of the CAA, Commissioner Yeager and all the football-playing member institu-tions for the re-invitation to stay in the league. They have made it clear that the University of Rhode Island is a very important and long-standing member of their association,” Bjorn said.

“All the institutions in the conference are thrilled that Rhode Island has accepted our invitation to remain in the conference,” Yeager said. “As a charter member dating back to 1946, URI is a valued member and an

important rival for many of our schools. We are very excited that the addition of new members Albany and Stony Brook will quickly establish even more rivalries for our five Northeast institutions, strengthening all the programs.”

On Nov. 22, 2010, Rhode Island announced its intention to become an associate member of the Northeast Con-ference in football, beginning with the 2013 season.

“I would like to thank Northeast Conference Commis-sioner Noreen Morris as well as all of the Presidents and Athletic Directors from the NEC for the original invitation to join the league as an associate member for football,” Bjorn added. “We made the original decision to accept the NEC invitation to ensure the sustainability of URI football, which could have been compromised for

geographical reasons.

“As has been the case in college athletics over the past number of years with conference realignment, institu-tions have made numerous choices to align and adjust to an changing landscape,” Bjorn explained. “The recent changes in CAA football membership - the addition of Stony Brook and Albany and loss of southern schools Old Dominion and Georgia State - we felt that it makes the most sense for URI to remain in the CAA.”

URI is a charter member of CAA Football. The league was formed on Dec. 3, 1946 as the Yankee Conference with five other New England-based land grant colleges. The Atlantic 10 gained control of the league from 1997-2006 before the league became CAA Football, beginning with the 2007 season.

Upon his arrival at the University of Rhode Island campus on February 27, 2009 a humbled yet engetic Joe Trainer promised Rhody football fans that he would make his players accountable in every phase of the game and not cut corners.

“I cannot tell you how honored and humbled I am to be the head coach at the University of Rhode Island,” Trainer said at his introductory press conference. “It is truly an honor that I am going to embrace and I am going to make everyone associated with this program proud of the way we conduct ourselves from the head coach all the way down to the team manager.

“Coming back here in a different capacity as a head coach I believe we are going to do great things on the field and above all else we are going to do it the right way,” Trainer explained. “We are not going to cut corners and we are going to make our kids accountable in every phase.”

Now in his fourth season as head coach and fourth overall at URI, Trainer - a veteran of more than 20 years of college football coaching experience - has molded the Rams into a that works just as hard off the field as it does on the field.

Trainer places a strong emphasis on academics and community service. This past season in the classroom, nine players earned Academic All-Conference honors. Since 2009, 32 of Trainer’s play-ers have earned Academic All-CAA honors.

In addition to the conference honor, defensive lineman Matt Rae and offensive lineman Kyle Elliott both were named Capitol One NCAA Division I Academic All-District First Team members. It was the third consecutive honor for Rae, who also was one of 58 players from the Football Champion-ship Subdivision who were named to the Athletic Directors Association Academic All-Star Team. Rae was one of 12 national finalists for the 11th Annual Football Championship Subdivision Ath-letics Directors Association postgraduate scholarship.

On the field, the Rams placed five players on the 2011 All-CAA Team. Seniors Anthony Baskerville, Jason Foster and Willie McGinnis were each voted to the second team by the league’s coaches, while senior Kyle Bogumil and junior Doug Johnson were named to the third team. Baskerville also was one of just 28 players named to the Division I FCS All-New England Football Team.

During the 2010 campaign, Trainer led the Rams to five wins - their most since 2001. In addition, Trainer guided the Rams to wins over three top 25 teams, including 2009 national champion Villa-nova. Following the year, seven URI players were named to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) all-conference team, while Trainer was named the league’s Coach of the Year.

Among Rhody’s seven all-conference selections, defensive end Victor Adesanya and kick returner Travis Hurd were each selected All-CAA First Team. In addition, Trainer’s defense unit ranked third against the run in CAA Football, limiting opponents to just 126.4 yards per game and gained a league-best 13 fumbles. On the offensive side of the ball, the Rams featured CAA Football’s fifth-best rushing attack (146.4). The 2010 season also saw Rhody defeat in-state rival Brown 27-24 in overtime as the Rams re-claimed the Governor’s Cup Trophy. Senior Matt Hansen went on to sign with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, where he ended the 2011 season on the team’s practice squad. Hansen will go to training camp with Atlanta again in 2012.

In his first season as head coach, Trainer and his staff laid the ground work for future success. In 2009, he oversaw a defensive unit that ranked second in the CAA in turnover margin and gained a league-best 15 fumbles and picked off 11 passes. Offensively, the Rhody made tremendous strides down the stretch as it averaged 352.3 total yards of offense per game in its final three contests. Following the year, Rhody had three individuals earn CAA all-conference honors, including line-backer Rob Damon, who also earned Sports Network All-America accolades.

In the community, Trainer has played an instrumental role in the team’s involvement with the Na-tional Marrow Society. Since his first season as head coach in 2009, Trainer and the Rhody Football team have played host to an annual Bone Marrow Drive. The event, which takes place every spring on the URI campus, has not only raised awareness on the importance of donating Bone Marrow,

but it has also seen the addition of over 700 new individuals to the national registery. Prior to the Third Annual Rhody Football Bone Marrow Drive, junior center and Rhode Island native Matt Greenhalgh donated his bone marrow to an individual in need in an effort to save his life. A sec-ond URI student-athlete, rower Grace Rignanese, donated marrow in January of 2012 to save the life of an 18-year-old girl. Like Greenhalgh, Rignanese was discovered as a match through the football team’s drive.

Trainer was introduced as URI’s 19th head coach in school history in 2009. He returned to Rhode Island after a brief stint at Bowling Green in December 2008 where he served as the Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator under two-time Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Coach of the Year Dave Clawson.

During the 2008 season, Trainer was Rhode Island’s defensive coordinator. His unit forced URI opponents into 11 fumbles, which ranked in the top five of CAA Football. His defensive scheme also allowed linebacker Matt Hansen to finish second in the league in total tackles with 111, as he went on to earn All-CAA Football Second Team and Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-New England honors.

Prior to his stint at Rhode Island, Trainer spent three seasons as head coach of Millersville Uni-versity, a member of the powerhouse Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), from 2005-2007. Before heading to Millersville, Trainer spent eight seasons at CAA-rival Villanova, starting out as linebackers coach before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 2005. During his ten-ure at Villanova, Trainer helped the Wildcats to two conference championships, two NCAA Playoff appearances (1997 and 2004) - including the national semifinals - two Lambert Cups, two wins over I-A schools (Rutgers and Temple), and five top 20 rankings in the final poll. Additionally, the Wildcats were nationally-ranked for a league-record 35 consecutive weeks and posted a then school-record 12 wins in 1997.

Trainer’s defensive scheme put the Wildcats as No. 1 in the Atlantic 10 in total defense in 2003 and 2004. Villanova finished seventh amongst NCAA Division I-AA schools in scoring defense (16.2 ppg) and 14th nationally in total defense (302 ypg allowed) in 2003. In 2004, Trainer’s defense yielded under 300 yards per game and was second in the A-10 in scoring defense (22.5 ppg). Trainer was instrumental in Brian Hulea earning First Team Atlantic 10 honors in 2003 and 2004.

Trainer spent the 1995 and 1996 season at the University of New Haven, where he worked as linebackers coach and defensive coordinator. In his two seasons at New Haven, Trainer helped the Chargers win 17 games and earn a berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs. Under his tutelage New Haven finished ranked in the Top 20 in both seasons and his defense also set school records for fewest points allowed, points per game allowed, and turnover margin. Off the field, Trainer served as the academic coordinator.

The Roslyn, Pa., native began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Temple University in 1990. Two years later, Trainer took over as linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Frostburg State University, where he also developed and oversaw the teams in-season strength and conditioning program. Following the 1992 season, he joined the coaching staff at Colgate University. While in Hamilton, he coached the outside linebackers and punt and kickoff teams.

Trainer received his undergraduate degree in English from Dickinson College in 1990. He earned a his masters degree from Temple University in 1992 and his M.S. in counseling and human rela-tions from Villanova in 2004. Trainer and his wife Moreen are the proud parents of Liam, Dillon and Keira. The Trainers live in Saunderstown.
